Solved Fixing the Build Mod Ships

I'm about done with the Hannah, but have some questions. :hmm

What is a good cannon size for this ship? The US_Hannah has 4-4 pounders and the PiratHannah has 12-9 pounders. Are long nines too big?

Could someone look at this ship and tell me if the rigging for that square sail is ok? A modeler should spend some time with her anyway because she has the "spanker doesn't fit the raked mast" syndrome.

looks good! :onya the real hannah carried 4 pdrs so 9 pdrs are definately too big, but I think 6 pdrs wwould probably fit, so maybe make that the max caliber for both? I dont know how to fix the spankers and raked masts problem, it happens on my Prince de Neufchatel too :modding

Ok, the Hannah is on the FTP in my "after beta 2" folder. The changes are: spankers, guns, and crew. I left the US_Hannah with a small crew and 4 pounders and the PiratHannah has a wee bit bigger crew and 6 pounders.

I have already started on the Bermuda Sloop and this is a strange ship. It is nearly as long as a light frigate but has just a few small cannons and a small hold. The cannon models are huge, leading me to want to upgrade them to 12 pounders. I also want to give it a larger hold. Thoughts?

To start, a sloop shouldn't be anywhere near the length of a frigate... The Largest guns you would ever see on one of those are six pounders. The squares'l on Hannah does have some minor errors, but I have no idea whether the game will allow them to be fixed or not.

Edit: There are two verticalish lines connecting the yardarms of the two yards to each other that shouldn't be there, and two lines running from the lower yardarm down to the deck that shouldn't be there. I'm working on a diagram showing all the lines attached to yards and sails to make this more clear.

Edit II: Must have accidentally pressed reply instead of edit and not realized it.

great! thanks Hylie :dance and I agree, the bermuda sloop is probably too big, even though we do have some mighty small frigates ingame. the hold space could be increased, though the sloop does have fine lines, so I guess it depends what it is currently. I know it was fairly common practice early in the war of 1812 for small american privateers, usually schooners, to mount a couple of very large long guns on pivots instead of more smaller guns. (I think 24pdrs were even used in some cases) but this was usually only possible because they were mounted on pivots in the center of the ship, and thus didnt affect stability as much as if they were on the broadside.

Another common practice during that timeI also recall was mixing calibers on broadsides... I would have said you could have used nine pounders, but there only would have been two of them, the rest of the guns being four or six pounders.

The smallest a true frigate should be is of 28 guns in rating (anything less is simply a post ship) so we may have some problems with proportions. I also recall there being an issue with the location of the gaff and main yard on that particular vessel.

I might as well make this point here...
The Speedy shouldn't be called a merchant brig. (I'm assuming the name is the same as CoAS) The hold was far too wet and cramped for it to be an effective merchant, and it was too heavily armed in relation to its size.

If I remember right the Speedy is called a Speedy class brig in POTC, but through a similar error the bounty is called a trade brig, despite being a ship :urgh

In GMViewer the dimensions of the Bermuda sloop are: L-33, W-8, D-3.

The dimensions of corvette1 are: L-35, W-10, D-3. These are approximations.

This is quite a large ship with loads of problems. I might just fix the spankers and call it quits.

alright, well the spanker would be a big fix :onya the ship could also do with a reduction in speed, its way to fast, but I can do that if you want

I'll make lots of changes and you can fine tune it yourself soon. The gun models are huge, easily 24 pounders, so I will increase them to 12 pounders. Overall it will be smaller and faster than the Indiaman.

If needed I can just remodel it. (maybe before I do Pilgrim) I happened to find plans for almost the exact same vessel online. It won't necessarily be all that good, but it will be more accurate than the one presently ingame hull-wise and especially rigging-wise. I do have some cool ideas to play with involving the running course.
Believe it or not, these things could actually look good.

I believe you are correct. I actually just realized that and was coming back to edit the post.

Someone said he would sometime in the future. This year?

What we have now is far larger than the model. Here is what we have. Look at the size of those guns! :2guns

Maybe the entire model including the guns should be scaled down until Seanorris's version arrives.
Edit: the rigging is also pretty far off.

What do you suggest we rename the Bounty to, then? "Trade Ship" would be a bit vague...

I think seanorris said he was modelling that sloop, using chapmans/chapelle's plans?
I've never liked the Bermuda sloop model at all, so this will be a most welcome replacement!

Rescaling the whole model is probably not worth all the effort, considering a new model is in the works.
I know it will take a while to complete, but rescaling is a pain nonetheless.

This ship is hopeless. My first attempt at fixing the spankers failed. TOOL corrupted the GMs. So far I have only made a few small changes.

I'll drink to that! :drunk

I've moved on to the USS_Enterprise. This should go quickly, but I have a question. How can a ship no larger than a Lugger carry 24-12 pounders and a crew of 144 men? Is is even possible to get that many men on this bathtub?

Oh yeah, she does not have a crew.
