Solved Fixing the Build Mod Ships

How can a ship no larger than a Lugger carry 24-12 pounders and a crew of 144 men? Is is even possible to get that many men on this bathtub?
I guess the cannons must be pretty tiny, or at least smaller than 12 pounders.
Still, I can't find any records of a USS Enterprise with this many guns. Anyone know which ship it's based on? :? (No Star Trek references, please...)

I just did a search and found her here. http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php/topic/13221-sir-its-the-enterprise/page__view__findpost__p__317190__hl__enterprise__fromsearch__1

There is no way something that small could carry that size guns, so I will make them 4 pounders and adjust the crew size, unless someone has a better idea. :keith

thats the old enterprise based off of the inteceptor model, (which is itself a modified replica of the brig lady washington, a small merchant brig that mightve been rigged as a sloop originally http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Washington america is probably the last nation that would have a quarterdecked brig as a warship, except maybe during the revolution period. I was talking about pgargon's USS enterprise of 1799, it is schooner rigged and just needs the spankers fixed http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php/topic/15907-uss-enterprise-1799/ both wouldve carried 6pdrs max, maybe 4pdr for the unrealistic brig version

Wait, so it IS from Star Trek? How ironic. xD:

Seeing as it was given several fictional modifications, I guess that explains why there are, strangely, 24 guns.
Reducing the gun calibre and crew size sounds good to me.

OK, the USS_Enterprise fantasy brig is on the FTP in my "after beta 2" folder. She has no crew so I didn't mess around with anything except the flag, spanker, guns, and crew. :beer

Since I'm there anyway, the HMS_Interceptor is next. She only has 18 guns.......................... :rumgone

A good maximum crammed in like sardines number for the crew of a vessel of that size is between 55 and 65 people. The smallest possible crew would have been around six men (not uncommon for some merchantmen)

Someone should do a Lady Washington version of Lady Washington sometime.... (retexture, rename, and reduce guns) It was a revolutionary war privateer and the first American (as in United States) vessel to reach the American West Coast and Japan. Lady Washington

I guess I could do it once I figure out how to texture.

I think I rember seeing a version textured like the lady washington in a screenie of COAS once? someone posted that they thought the color scheme was too bright, I really have no Idea when or where I saw it though :shrug and great! Hopefully you will still do the real USS enterprise schooner too?

It may be worth mentioning that the rig of the schooner Enterprise is way off... If you look up "Schooner Enterprise" in Google images you'll see what I mean.

yeah I know it was actually a double topsail schooner, and the hull is wrong too, but to make it all historically accurate would really require building an entirely new model, and for what it is, just a 12 gun generic schooner, it isnt too bad, especially for nations other than america. (kind of a tubby hull to be considered a baltimore clipper or anything of the like)

There will be some delay as the game I was using to work on these ships has died. :j3 When I get back up to speed I will continue with the HMS_Interceptor and then the US_Enterprise.

These are the two ships you gentlemen are discussing. :nerbz

EDIT: I may have found the cause of my problem with dead games. In another game in another install everything was going smoothly until I used the console to get the HMS_Interceptor.

In two games on different installs I am now getting "allocate memory error".

EDIT II: The problem has been traced to something in mast1. It has been corrected and the HMS_Interceptor is working again. But! The main GM is corrupted and I will not work on this ship further. The spanker, heads'ls, crew, and cannons are updated.

This ship is on the FTP in my "after beta 2" folder.

The spankers on US_Enterprise are fixed, but it will take some experimenting to figure out how to rig those square sails.

The problem is the control lines. They all go right through the gaff and cluster at on spot on the mast. The lines for the lower yard are already fixed, and the top yard will be easy. The middle yard might be a problem, but I have an idea.

There are some other ships with similar rigs such as the gaff schooner, topsail schooner, and the Hooker that still need to be fixed. This is a good learning experience.

I believe you are referring to the braces... For a vessel of that type it is entirely plausible that they will all end within a few feet of each other on blocks directly below the main cross trees, then from there be led down to the pin rail on deck.

Ah... the squares'ls were usually wider than that so the braces usually cleared the fores'l gaff (it's only a spanker if it's on the aftermost mast of a completely square rigged vessel) so that was never an issue. I guess I'll leave it to your judgement then.

Edit: I spotted a major anatomical error that's causing the problem. If you want I could try and entirely redo the rigging once I start modelling ships so that I can get some experience in that area. At the moment I have the advice of the two foremost rigging experts in California as well as the advice of a veteran schooner captain at my disposal.

In GOF this ship is the USS_Enterprise1, so you can see firsthand where the problems are. I was going to eliminate the tops'l and raise the mains'l until I noticed that there is a big old stay in the way.

What I am working on now is to run a line between the masts and then hang the braces off of that in a similar manner to the light fluyt and the Neptunus.

This is a pleasant sailing ship, so by all means clean her up. :onya I betcha a tankard of ale that those gentlemen would be pleased to teach you their craft.

The US_Enterprise is on the FTP in my "after beta 2" folder. This is a straight drop in to POTC.

EDIT: I wuz gonna do the Surprise next, but which one? :shrug There are at least 3 of them. HMS_Indefatigable, HMS_Surprise, and RN_Surprise. The first two are already repaired and the last one has a compound spanker that a modeler

would have to fix. This is beyond my limited skills.

For RN_Surprise, would it not be possible for you to replace the spanker-and-yard combo with two separate model files, allocating the locators where appropriate?
You'd need to add a geometry locator to the yard which holds the sail above the spanker, to add a separate yard model below it.

This process would need to be done even if the current combo model was separated by a modeller, but it's less work to substitute some existing models instead. :wp

The one I am thinking one is similar to the version that plays the indefatigable, but was improved by pgargon and for some reason given fewer guns. as far as I know the rig for that version (called the unite class frigate ingame) and the razee frigate version should be the same, including the spanker :onya
