Solved Fixing the Build Mod Ships

The RN_Surprise is the version I will work on, and it needs a lot of work! None of the dimensions are the same as the others, and the sails and lines are all over the place. :shock

It looks like the spanker from the BrigRoyal will be a close enough fit and a yard from the Unicorn is going to work. It will mostly just be a matter of copying numbers.

EDIT: The BrigRoyal spanker has the "model cannot be read" bug so now the Lydia spanker is being used. The Unicorn yard won't turn, so I added a minisail, and it still won't turn. :modding

I thought the unicorn had a lateen? looks like it is the version I thought it was, It isn't the same dimensions as the HMS_Indefatigable? It is definately based off that model, I looked at the RN_suprise in Maya once to see what I could do with it (unfortunately the file corrupted) but I could see that the gun ports present on the Indy version had been covered up, and despite new headrails and tweaks to the stern, it appears to be the same hull, I'm suprised that the rigging of the two ships isn't the same :shrug

While the hulls are the same size, the masts are different with the RN_Surprise having raked masts. Its spanker is also shorter and taller. The BrigRoyal spanker is close in size but can't be used. The Lydia spanker is tall but also just as long as the other spankers.

The Unicorn has a ummm, gaff spanker? It has no lower yard. I filched one of the other yards, the fors'l one methinks.

Sounds like you put the geometry locator on the mast, when in fact it should go on the yard model which has the sail locators.
Since that yard already moves, attaching the new yard to it will force it to move properly.

Yes I added a locator to the mast for that yard. The first time around I knew what I wanted and made wholesale changes to that GM, and it did not work. So last night I started over making a single change and then testing it in game. Rinse and repeat many many times.

It always worked and ended up exactly like the first one except that it works. :shrug Not that I'm complaining. Also, it turns out that the spanker from the Lydia is the only one that can be used because all of the others have the wrong base texture and don't match up with the

rest of the ship. Something about blinn vs lambert.

hmm, I always use blinn, but I'm not sure what the difference is. as long as the lydia one works, then great! :) not sure If I mentioned this earlier but I have the improved Hannah and Bounty versions ingame now, and they are much bettter!

I don't think the material makes a difference. It's the UV mapping that decides whether the model works with deck.tga or desk.tga-based textures
Anyway, at least it works now. :onya

The thing is, it was not possible to get the required texture to show up with the lambert. I tried every .tga in the game with no luck.

Methinks I found the reason for my failure with the Bermuda Sloop, and will try it again soon.

I'm about done with the RN_Surprise, but have some questions. Are the flags/pennants ok? Is the tops'l rigging ok? Methinks people will like walking around the deck of this ship.

99 percent of the time there was just a flag (called an ensign) flown between the spanker gaff and boom, and an obnoxiously long pennant on the top of the mainmast. (up to forty feet long and very narrow)

I can't see the tops'l's rigging in the picture well enough to comment on that.

well maybe the pennant at the peak of the mizzen mast could be removed? and the flag on the foremast? otherwise I think it looks perfect :onya

You could always make the mainmast pennant longer, too. Generally, those are only too long when they start looking stupid.

Yeah! This new layout really shrinks the screenies. Here is one that is as close to the ship as I can get and still show it all. What I did for the tops'ls was string a line between the masts with pulleys in it and then ran the braces through them and down to the deck. If this is too small I will try that new Dropbox doodad.

The braces look right, but there may be a problem with the lifts, halliard, clews, bunts, and leeches, which I will have to explain with a diagram. (tomorrow, maybe) I don't think the lifts can be fixed without moddeling them in, unless you can make a line look extremely droopy.

Edit: the mizzen topgallant should have its own mast. It shouldn't be part of the mizzen topmast.

I dont think it is part of the mizzen topmast, look at the first pic of this ship on this page and you will see. the crosstrees are probably a bit high up considering where the yard is, but there is still a mizzen t'gallant mast

Ah... I did remember some similar ship with that problem...
In that case the t'gallantmast should be large enough so that there is room for a royal, even if the sail is not being used.

Pgargon made this ship. I am only detailing the sails and rigging.

I still can not get Dropbox to work, so here is another screenie. I recognize the word halyard and Pgargon did those, so I presumed he was working off a ships plan.

That pennant is the longest I have ever done. I believe it is approx 14 meters long, which is maybe 45 feet. Hmm. Maybe it should be shortened.

Looks great! It definitely shouldn't be shortened, this painting gives an idea of just how long these pennants often were. http://4.bp.blogspot...87c8a3b8e27.jpg
