Solved Fixing the Build Mod Ships

The next ship series I will tackle are the 2nd rates, the Ship of the Line. It seems they got a major upgrade last year to the hull, but the rigging has never been touched. It looks like a modeler is needed to fix deck2 also.

They certainly need better rigging, considering their size and lack of ropes! Same goes for the stock 'Manowar' models, at some point.
They'll probably need to be fairly similar to the First Rates, in most respects. Might even be worth 'borrowing' the masts/yards?

Even after the major detail upgrade to the hull, she's still a bit of an ugly duckling, to my eyes. And you're right, deck2 is no perfect fit.
I reckon she's in need of some major modelling surgery to bring things up to a better standard.
I might see to it myself eventually, but not until I've got the Trinity 2nd Rate in-game, at least.

I was skeptical, but tried the 1st rate masts anyway. With a little mast relocating they aren't perfect, but only the most critical will notice the flaws. Good call! :drunk

The only glaring problem with deck2 is the stairs and hand rail at the poop deck. If they were removed I would be ok with it.

ERK: Scratch that. There are too many too big mismatches on the hull for this to work. :walkplank Onward thru the fog!

Hmm, the big mismatches seem to be the, er, [checks Post Captain's diagrams...] 'channels'. :mm
The easiest way of fixing this in Maya would be to resize and position the channels to match the new deadeyes' positions, rather than vice versa.

Seeing as I'd much prefer these masts to be used instead of the old ones, that might be worth doing as a quick adjustment.
Provided you're happy with the mast models' positions, if you could post the locator coordinates I could sort it out.
I could probably make the small adjustment to deck2 while I'm at it. Bigger upgrades can be done another time.

Ok, if you want to do it in Maya here it is. :bow It is a complete working ship with very messy sails. :eek:ops2

Fixing the channels means they have to be lengthened, lowered, and widened. Also the lifeboats would have to be moved. A quick walk around the deck will show what is wrong with deck2. :cheers

I thought that model was going to be replaced by the Trinity once it is ingame?
I originally though that too, but thinking about it, this model is more suitable for the last two periods than the Trinity (the Christianus Sextus was launched in 1733, I think).
Besides, it shouldn't take too much effort to make her fairly decent in the short term. Perhaps more could be done eventually to make the ship a better standard.

Eleven downloads! :shock I have gone about as far as I can without adding locators to the hull. I have adjusted the sails and added the bowspritropes. Now to stand aside and see what happens. :cheers

Progress so far is already looking good, I can tell you that much!
How's this for the new helm area:

Do we still want the guy standing there at the wheel, or can he be relieved of permanent duty? xD:

There's just a couple of small things left to do, including replacing the extra cannons that were added using TOOL, and then I'll export and upload the model.
All details that were originally added have had reverse lighting fixed where necessary, and all conflicts between the hull and deck2 have been resolved.
While I still want to add gunport hatches and a new beakhead, those can wait until another time (otherwise there's no telling when I'll be finished! )

Leave him there. Hell, put a parrot on his shoulder. :yoho

Yeah, don't be going overboard yet. This is supposed to be a quick and dirty update.

Very well. "Stay at your post, lieutenant!" :whipa

I just tried looking at the ship with the textures added, and boy does Maya hate that. The entire hull goes partly transparent. :modding
I think it's because the hull is kind of double-sided; there's literally two of almost every polygon. Seems to be the same for all the models imported from VCO.

the transparency bug can be fixed by selecting the relevant material, opening attribute editor, right clicking on the word "Transparency" and selecting "Break connection"

Aha! So it can! Thanks for the tip, mate! :bow
I'd searched everywhere on the net for a way to fix that, and hadn't found anything useful at all.

Voilà! She's finished: http://www.pyratesah...Rate_Upgrade.7z :dance

I've deleted the locators you'll no longer need, including the two decks and extra cannons. It's all in one model file now.
Let me know what you think of the changes.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to HEX edit the model to use crewmanFra.tga for the helmsman, instead of crewmanBrt.tga. Just a small detail depending on the nation.

Well, she is just about done. There are two antenna thingies sticking out the front that I want to string some lines to, but I'm not sure what they are supposed to do. Do they have something to do with the anchor rigging?

There is a mismatch associated with mast 2 or the foremast that will have to be fixed some day, but other than that everything fits fairly well. The deadeyes are part of the masts, so I had to move the masts around to get them to line up.

I had a scare earlier today. I looked at the config.exe to help out someone else and it killed the POTC install. :facepalm It took several attempts to revive it. It's a touchy little bugger.

Removing the "options" file from your main game folder can help wonders. :doff

I tried that too, but in this case it was the config.exe. For some reason this ATI video card is sensitive to it. I had to set the resolution as high as it would go and save, then go into the engine.ini and reset the resolution there and save before the install would load. :shrug

No other combination worked and it would instacrash before it could get to any screen.

I think what you're referring to are the boomkins... They have nothing to do with the anchors. A line does go there (The fores'l tack) but I think I'll explain it as soon as I get my computer turned on tomorrow- I'm a little too tired to write a clear explanation at the moment.
