Solved Fixing the Build Mod Ships

Yeah, my bad, ive always used the two terms interchangerbly, but I geuss gaff is more the type of rig of the spanker sail. Anyways, i didnt mean to be demanding, I just thought I would bring those ships to attention because high detail ships look so much better with the correct rigging. I am personally very busy with my own projects right now, but I will learn how to do this at some point, so hopefully I can help fix these ships if they arent done already :onya

I just got the NL_Convoiship. It is a very interesting ship similar to the FWzP, and it is obvious someone spent a lot of time with her, but never quite finished. The walk file must be from a different ship since it does not match up at all. Would anyone be interested in making a walk file for her?

Also, does anyone know the history of this ship?

I got a new video card and now GMViewer is acting up. It works normally until I click on "show labels" and then the FPS drops to 1 or less. This makes viewing where locators are at difficult. Has anyone else run into this or have any ideas on how to fix it? :?

It started out as a quick fix for the wooden swivel gun on Caravel1, kinda sorta mushroomed. :wp Anyhoo, there is an updated Caravel1 on the FTP in my folder, in the "after beta 2" folder.

I've always noticed a framerate drop when viewing locators, but not to that extent.
Could it be related to high quality anti-aliasing? That causes extreme framerate drops for me when I try playing the game, but I haven't tried GM Viewer with those settings. :shrug

Nice! Realistic rigging works wonders for these ships. :keith
The only thing annoying me is the flags. I'm thinking the mainmast should either have an ensign or a long, thin pennant; what do you reckon?

I dunno about AA & AF causing it. With the nvidia card I was using 16 & 16 X AA & AF. With this ATI card I'm using 8X AA & AF. Anyway, it suddenly started working normally again. :shrug

The English galleon has a similar arrangement and methinks that one is historically accurate. But Post Captain recently said that having a pennant or ensign there denotes a naval or merchant vessel. I don't recall which though. :?

A thinner pennant would look better.

During the 1700s and later, it was standard for warships to fly a single long, thin pennant at the mainmast, and an ensign at the spanker or flagstaff or somewhere on or near the mizzenmast. Merchant ships could fly flags wherever they chose really, and warships could also have a commodore's or admiral's personal flag flown from one of the other masts. This arrangement couldve been common long before then, but I just dont know enough about the early periods to say one way or the other for this ship. :shrug

Ok, If I manage to remember, from now on merchant ships will have their flags, pennants in this order from the front. Pennant, flag, pennant, flag. The Indiaman (fastmerchantman) is already like this.

In any event I will put a flag on the mainmast of merchant ships and a pennant on the mainmast of warships.

I will post an updated caravel tomorrow.

The updated caravel1 is on the FTP. Because I changed the order of the flags a new ships_init.c is included.

Sounds good to me. That should help to distinguish between the two, if we eventually enforce this on all existing ships. :onya

For the flags/pennants I have been looking at ships as I get them and changing them as needed. When the time comes I'm planning on posting my ships_init.c and let you merge it with yours.

How are things going with the class 3 Spanish Fast Galleon? Is it possible to fix the bad bow wave? :?

I'm sailing a standard frigate now and after all of the new ships I worked on, it looks odd. I have the urge to tinker with it but do not wish to duplicate efforts. How are things going with any updates?

update: On leaving port I got the beep beep. Looking at the logs methinks it is something I did to the flags, which is the only thing I've changed. But what did I do to cause this? :shrug I'm sailing frigate2.

Nevermind. I lowered the camera locator 0.2 and TOOL corrupts the main GM every time. :modding

I haven't touched that ship in a while, but it does need seeing to again. It should be possible to fix the bow wave; it's probably to do with the export process. :shrug

The sooner I finish my upgraded frigate, the better, it would seem. I haven't worked on it recently because of pushing to finish the Trinity, but I do want to continue very soon.
I think I have some screenies lying around of updates in recent weeks, though, so I'll see about getting those in the main thread.
For now, don't worry too much about the stock frigates. There'll be plenty of rigging work to do on the new model when it's finished, if you're willing to help. ;)

Well, I'm done updating the NL_SevenProvincien for now. There is always more to do. :beer

She is on the FTP in my "after beta 2" folder.

:cheers

TOOL is corrupting another ship! :2dn This time it is the Royal Manila Galleon, and it is once again just the main GM. What is causing this, and is there a way to fix it?

Is that the stock Galeon1? Somehow I'm not surprised, but I still don't know exactly what causes the corruption in the first place. :shrug
Usually a re-export with Maya, done correctly, should stop it from happening again, but that isn't always the case.

We should probably keep in mind that the TOOL itself is an ageing and temperamental program.
What we REALLY need is someone to sort it out, but that probably involves editing dll files, and obviously programmers are hard to come by. :modding

Sending a message to Inez Diaz can't hurt. She was gone long before I came along though. Would it be better for an old timer to try contacting her?

The SP_Galleon50 is probably partially messed up already. The collision detection is wrong. It is a dangerous ship to get too close to, with smaller ships sometimes almost getting thrown out of the water and sent spinning away.

It sucks to sink a captured ship and lose a good officer when all you are trying to do is gently sail away.

Hey! Lookee what I found! :cheeky Methinks this can be made to work.

Now if only some kind soul with a working Maya could fix the flagpole. :bow
