By the way, have a question, Where can i change the startparameters? Like in B13, you know??<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Is that with the Auto Skill System off? The ability points you can distribute normally with it on or off.
With the mod off, the distribution interface is messed up. A fix for it exists, but is not yet included because it's not readily compatible with Alpha 9 at the moment.
As a workaround, you should be able to highlight the abilities button, then use the arrow keys to select the various skills and use Space to increase them.
Be sure to use the BLUE interface and not the brown one for this.

TY Pieter! I'm about to start a new game and try some of the settings in .c files snd I'm about to try that seaview thing and travel to Greenfort, ahem, I mean Bridgetown and see whats up with the Storeman and report tomorrow! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Oh, as far as setting your starting skills, personally I find it the easiest to just do it through code in the console.
In PROGRAM\console.c, below the definition of pchar, add some lines like <i>pchar.skill.leadership = 5;</i>.
Then when you press F12 in the game, you'll suddenly have 5 leadership.
This works for level as well (<i>pchar.level = 5;</i>), though there are better ways of handling that, the easiest being the cheatmode.

i'm back with another problem, this is the deal:
i'm doing the Legend of Jack Sparrow quest and i'm at the point where you meet Davy, he gave me some new clothes and told that i had to walk into sea to get the Pearl, i got to the deck and wanted to save my game, but there was no previous save file and when i saved and wanted to load there was no save file either <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />
now i have to start all over again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

HUH??? Is that with Patch 1? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

hi everybody,

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->That's not the midnight crash; the midnight crash was fixed and actually crashed the game completely.
Beats me why that's happening though. I've seen it sometimes but definitly not always. Do you always have it?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

quite often, Pieter.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Did you enable Auto Loot? There is the option to have Auto Loot AND manual loot both enabled, which sounds like what you're playing with.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

yes, exactly.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Does that always happen? Can anybody confirm? Should be looked into, if so. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

well, pieter, now i know why.
tested several times.
my avatar was approached by a seller in the main square.
a fine french sword was really appailling...so my avatar equipped a sandbag, stunned the seller, and hided in a house.
only the french soldiers, who witnessed the..er...accident..., were totally unrensponsive.
again, equipped with a sandbag, my avatar stunned the french official Hardouin, then was able to talk to him, gave him a potion to recover, and, voila`, the dialogue was there and the quest could be completed.
however, this is a bug.

the priest in the church got no dialogue.
this error shows up:
"can`t load dialog file pater jourdain_dialog.c"

Oiseau Bug:
rising a french flag i left St. Pierre escorting the french barque in open waters.
could not sink the barque, because when i switched from arcade map to sea map, my ship had still raised the french flag, so the barque was green in my radiant.
neverthless i tried to fire with no luck.
so, i raised a new flag, english.
no luck, still green and cannons refused to fire.
i reloaded the game, and left S. Pierre with Dutch flag, this time when i switched to sea map, my ship was showing automatically the english flag, and the barque was recognised as enemy.

fred bob dialogue bugged:
when my avatar ask him to raise a new flag he says "what sorta colors ye be wishin` tew fly cap?"
whatever the choice, he repeates the above words a no new flag is raised.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->You are supposed to be getting XP, but not insane amounts. I thought it was fairly well-balanced with Hook's latest fixes in Alpha 9?
You do get sailing XP for sailing, but it goes slow and you need to actually do manual sailing (so you miss a lot of XP by using the worldmap).<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

maybe the xp is dependant to the commerce or sailing skills?
thanks to books, precious stones, and artifacts my skill points are higher.
i`m using the autoskill mod, which gives the percentage.
amusing mod.
when sailing i get 3-5% in sailing skill, but twice.
idem the xp.
that is:
my avatar gets 3% in sailing
then 476 xp.
then again 4% in sailing.
then 476xp.

after 30 seconds, this happens again.
the % in sailing is cool.
i gain them only in battlefighting, so is balanced IMO.
but the xp is too much, if i can lower the amount to 45 xp, and eliminate the duplicate xp, that would be really better.

Minor bugs:
the wench in port royale and in Barbados have no icon.
my avatar, standard storyline, is hailed as MISS.

You're not getting double experience points. It's just the way the experience is calculated you see the messsage twice... it gets divided in half in the code each time, then adjusted for difficulty. You should be getting 35 XP per game minute sailed, or 1050 every half hour. It's not that much when you're level 10. Also, it's about the only thing that gives sailing skill.

You don't get sailing skill or experience for game minutes sailed under time compression, and you only get them for sailing on the 3D deck.

If you fire manually on the Oiseau (using the V key or center mouse button, I don't know which is default these days, with the crosshairs on him) the ship goes hostile and autofire will then work. Also, if you enter Redmond either from the worldmap or by direct sailing there, the Oiseau goes hostile immediately. This may work with some other islands as well, I didn't test.

You have 12000 experience points at level 4. If you buy or sell 30000 worth of stuff you get 6000 points (I think) which would give you 18000 experience points. It's a lot at level 4, but not much at level 10.

I presume if I the game boots with the Build 13 screen after I think I have installed build 14 A9 and the patch, I have installed incorrectly, yes? If so, do I have to uninstall everything and try again?

Well, I figured out the cause of that weird calculation where it gets divided in half and counted twice. It goes back to a bug that's been there since at least Build 12. I'll see what I can do to fix that so you only get it once, but at twice the value. Same experience, same skill, only one log message.

It appears that you get twice the experience if you aren't playing with auto skilling turned on. Can anyone confirm that?

Ugh, smuggling in port royal seems to be borked. Whenever the coast guard shows up it crashes when I go back to sea. This is on the normal story line too.

I don't know if its only for my specific save game or if its a widespread problem. I'll find out soon, port royal is my favorite place to smuggle coffee and peppers too!

Edit: Ouch after another smuggling deal I managed to get the coast guard to say something other than "blah blah blah die!" He let me go...in return for -40 reputation...owwhch!

Edit 2: Now its crashing on Martuqin...that french town that I can't spell, too. Same deal with the coast guard. I'm going to start a new game and see if it crashes in it too, or if its just my save. Don't know been getting a whole bunch of CTDs this game.

Can anybody confirm smuggling is still not working right?

To vinnipuk: I'll look into those dialog problems as soon as I can.
At what point are you called "miss"?
There's several character models that don't have their portraits yet. Somebody should make them. But who and when?

I was quite surprised to notice that some of the default controls had changed at some point. I reset the ones I found to their previous defaults in Alpha 9. Except for forward/backward movement; those are W and S now. But then using the mouse for that REALLY doesn't make much sense anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=310321:date=Apr 2 2009, 04:26 AM:name=Jason)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Jason @ Apr 2 2009, 04:26 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=310321"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I presume if I the game boots with the Build 13 screen after I think I have installed build 14 A9 and the patch, I have installed incorrectly, yes? If so, do I have to uninstall everything and try again?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->That's not right; you should get a new screen. You extracted Alpha 9 right on top of your game version though, right? Overwriting all required files. The correct engine.exe and loading screens are included there so either you installed the wrong file (make sure it's the HUGE Alpha 9 Full file), the installation was to the wrong directory (this you can easily see by checking the game version in the main menu or in the buildinfo.txt file (NOT the folder) OR Windows somehow prevented you from overwriting the EXE file due to (STUPID!) security measures. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I've found that using the mouse for forward and back movement works quite well. I thought it had been the default forever. I was surprised to find the middle mouse button fired the guns manually, but I like it. Took me a while to figure out why my V key wasn't working for that. The mouse buttons still move you around the 3D sailing deck, right? Kind of silly to change it for land in that case.

Sailing experience: Every game minute you are sailing without time compression, a counter is incremented. At the hour and half-hour it's checked and you get the experience that's accumulated and the counter is reset. This is probably what you're seeing.

I have a question for everyone: If you or your officers have the Shared Experience perk, should your character get some fencing experience if your officers are fighting? I thought this was how it was working already, but it's not. I'm in that part of the code fixing other stuff, so if you like the idea, let me know. Note that it's not very much experience.

Hook

Mouse buttons for forward/backward movement has indeed been the default for a long time, but I changed it in Alpha 8 or Alpha 9.
It doesn't make much sense for the controls to swap in 3D sailing mode, but then in 3D sailing mode you're directly controlling your ship, not yourself.
Still, I suppose it's a matter of personal preference. I hate using the mouse buttons.
And I think we should change that middle-mouse-button back to V as well. Either that or update the Build Default Controls file. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

To me it sounds like it wouldn't make much sense to gain experience from other characters' fighting. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

That's really weird; Hook had noticed that you might accidentally remove a savegame (not all of them at once though) by pressing the Spacebar three times when starting the game and then moving your mouse a little bit by accident, which changes the selection from "Load game" to "Delete game". He then added a small fix to make sure you can't delete a file unless you CLICK on the delete button with the mouse.

There are already a lot of instances of that kind of thing happening. It's just not happening for fencing.

Hook

Actually it makes a lot of sense.

You learn something and teach the rest. Tell them a few things but not all. So the other chars get part of your experience.

I dont see why it shouldnt work the other way round aswel.
