The counting game

<i>Is that the way there spelling it in the game? I know I saw it was a "k." I started it late last night after watching some of the Olympics, which didn't end till past midnight here, at least the live feed events. Anyway, after checking out the classes I decided to be a spell caster and so far its working out okay. I was sent to that town to the northeast (Aridell) but got lost and wound up Eversleep cemetary, but finally made it to Aridell to find that guy and speak with him. Now I'm back at the Eversleep and was told if I want the key from the cemetary director than I need I to go down and clear out his basement of those salamanders <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> that are running around everywhere. That's where I'm at so far. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /></i>

wait wait wait WAIT! how'd you do that? i always have to pay him money to get the key! needless to say, i just steal it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> there's eight salamanders in the basement, just so you know. i'd prepare well for the cemetary too. it's crammed with traps and horribly powerful monsters, which is nearly impossible to overcome at your first go. anyway, prepare well, and save often once you dare to go inside. in that case you should manage. you don't need lockpicking, despite the locked doors. you'll find keys for those. unless i'm confusing it with another location.

they indeed spell it with a k. i thought that was slightly odd. how's the story so far? it get's a whole lot more interesting than it already is once you get a bit further.

Its pretty good so far, the story I mean. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Thanks for the heads up about Eversleep. I should stock up on potions. I figured soon I'd be running into things meaner and more powerful than those slamanders. I have been saving often. This games seems so familiar, (not the storyline, but just the general setup) I must have played something like it before. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

you still didn't tell me how you did it. really, i'm curious. i always pick the sly conversational option. this game really makes good work of that, now that i mention it. conversations really require some deep thought at times, given possible consequences, which isn't very common in games like this.

<i>Do what? Get the key from the cemetary director? I haven't yet. I told him I'd clear out his basement for him and he said he'd then give me the key. </i><img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

urrgh... for the third time, i wanted to know how you managed to get that assignment, but i already found that out myself.

it's more than a little annoying that it seems to be impossible to get a good short bladed weapon in the beginning. there's only good weapons from any other class. however, the weight advantage you get later on makes up for it, and i've specialized sufficiently to do enough damage. keep in mind though that you should explore thoroughly. it makes half the difference in collected experience and items.

8133

<i>To clear out the basement? I got that assignment from the cemetary director. Yes, I've tried to specialize as well to do the most damage with my strengths. And I have been searching all the areas I've been in. That is always the smart thing to do. You never know what you come across. I like the experience boost I got for finding that guy in Aridell. I've also taken on some quests from people in that village, though I turned one down I knew I'd never be able to complete this early in the game. The guy understood, saying it was pretty rough.</i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

well, there's never a time limit to your quests. you can always start a quest and then try it once you feel ready for it. i presume you're referring to the quest for retrieving the bar of mithril? i always enjoy that one, but i have to admit, it's a highly rogue class-defined mission. loads of traps and locks. that, by the way, was the location where you don't have to get lockpicking, since you can find keys for the locked doors.

you should have met a few slimes already in the South Parish area. there's one near Aridell, at the riverbed, a few near the northwest exit at a lake (the location is pretty well hidden) and some near the sea, in the southeast corner. they prefer shallow water, just so you know where you're likely to meet them.

at the very tip of the northeast corner is the east gate of Grimmhold. it's fairly safe to go inside, as long as you don't go past the main gates. there's a quest you can start there, though you can only complete it until much later. you should always start as many quests as possible, since they give you some bonus xp. you can still fullfill a quest's goal without taking the quest, but you won't get the xp if you didn't take the quest, since you didn't know you where supposed to be doing that.

<i>Yep, this game is huge. I didn't play it last night as I was out but I will dive back into it today. </i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

8136

well, you can buy a map at the inn to give you some idea. it's not awfully accurate, though it more or less shows everything in the right spot. the Parish region is part of the great Tangletree forest, as is Grimmhold. the forest makes up almost half the game's map. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" /> oh: don't go south just yet. if you do, stick to the northern fringes as much as you can. the shoreline is infested with shipwreckers, although that does often result in some swashbuckling scenarios.

8137

<i>I haven't ventured south yet. Ship wreckers sound pretty nasty, probably can't tangle with them yet. Ideally I'd like to build myself up as much as possible before venturing further into parts unknown. They say stick to the roads in the beginning but those roads suddenly dissapear in the undergrowth for large stretches.
And that map is kinda vague, though you can estimate where you are from it well enough.</i>

8138

well, that 'stick to the roads' thing only counts until you get to Aridell, really. that's when you get a decent outfit with that money you get. you did find the loose treestump near the well at the very beginning, right? that contains a class-specific item, a few potions and money, as well as a couple of sandals.

8141

<i>Yep. The letter said to look out there before leaving for Aridell. </i><img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

8142

good. you know, thieving in this game is an art. i take great pride in nabbing each and every object in the game without being caught, which is actually not a very good thing, but who cares? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

8143

<i>I tried to steal something from that priest in Aridell and he got pissed and zapped the hell out me. Good thing I saved the game before hand. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> As a rouge, you should have a better shot at it.</i>
