The counting game

<i>Well, I guess they will keep the linear storyline since it is a very popular game.</i>

<i>Sidequests are good.</i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Eschalon has lots of them. i've found out that doing things in a different order can also work out in interesting ways. for example, certain important items sometimes have multiple uses. it's all up to you if you are willing to test the second purpose, give up on the first one, or fullfill the first one straight away and ignore the second. great replay value.

you won't find any in the first hour of the game though, if you're going for the trial. i've been playing for 35 hours and i'm still not done. i'm not even sure i'm near the end, and then i haven't even done all sidequests.

<i>Wow. That is a huge game! </i><img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

compare it to oblivion. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> this is, however, the biggest downloadable RPG i've found yet. interestingly enough, a lot of content might be omitted, or i haven't discovered it yet. after all, it's called 'book 1'. there's an island to the south where i haven't been yet, but i have found a rowboat. the game didn't allow me to take the boat just yet though, so that either means it's part of the main quest, or it's been omitted until the so far unreleased sequel. and then there's the whole northern area beyond the mountains.

oh: this game has tons of clichéd traps which never cease to amuse me. you'll recognise a trap when you see one, or i simply have a knack for seeing them. (rogue, i tell ya) for example, recall the infamous cave filled with bats hanging from the cieling? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> oh look, there's a mysterious shiny thing in the rock pillar over there, i wonder what would happen if i'd nab it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> hehe. that was fun.

<i>I've heard so much about Oblivion. That's a huge game as well.

I've found a download site for Eschalon <a href="http://www.retro64.com/eschalon:_book_1_game.asp" target="_blank">http://www.retro64.com/eschalon:_book_1_game.asp</a>

That's the only way you can get this game, by downloading it?</i>

glad you like my avatar <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

<i>Maybe that's why some of it may be left out.</i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

no, i'm sure it's not. i have the full version. there's just more than meets the eye.

oh: the game's music is orchestral.

i find them allright. the game uses simple methods, enough to be satisfying, but simple enough to allow the game to run on low specs. there's full ambient lighting effects (thought i might add that they go through walls. not much of a bother), good textures, no animation flaws, fireflies at night when in forests (embrace the night when being a rogue. or being a sneaker in general), and absolutely awesome magical effects. the latter really stands out, almost out of place.

<i>I think you sold me on it then. I could go for playing a long, deep rpg with many side quests. I think I'll get it.</i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Hey! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> The moose... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> ...has spoken. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" /> Should try that with Stallion. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" /> But then the word 'moose' has to be replaced with word 'horse'. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

maybe i have a future as a dubious salesman. anyway, there are two little things you should be aware of:

don't swap your weapons when you're holding an item with your mouse at the same time. the item then dissapears. i lost two shields that way.

if you do something in relation to quests, don't postpone it. each and every dialogue option related to a quest is only selectable once. you can't inspect what's going on and come back later to finish the job, as that would probably be impossible then. therefor, save before you speak to important quest characters.
