Pre Build 13 Modpack

Judging by what we have so far discovered with testing, the attached version should not contain the CTDs. Please test this version and check if there really are no CTDs. You should be able to install it on top of your previous test installation, because this version overwrites all files anyway. I really hope this version works. If it does, we have narrowed down the problematic code to three files.

Very Good Pieter.......I'm off an "sailin"

Dear Pieter, thanks for all the hard work that you have put into making POTC a much better and more enjoyable game. Could you please give me some advice. I've been having an issue with Post Build12.

It happens at the stage where I'm trying to get out of Oxbay with Tobias and Rabel. As soon as we exit Oxbay, a French gaurd talks to me and then we have to run, but invariably I get killed by some explosion.
Is this a bug, or is this a part of the game?

Please help.

Thanks

ArchMike

Arch Mike,

I have never ecounterd and explosuin there are you sure this is not a pistol shot? In any case if it is an exploison, I doubt that it is a bug. Maybe someone added something. BTW did you notice an old shack in the port on the beach when this occurs?

Pieter, I sent you email earlier when I couldn't get to the board. I will try the new update this afternoon.

Pieter,

Here you go. The new update isn't working. Stormy start on Doweuseen. As soon as ship is fixed and you try to sail away from the island on the map. CTD. BTW the second update yesterday did not do this.

Pieter, this version is defintely bugged. Started a new game, didn't even get off the island. CTD in the store.

Not bothering to post the error log they all seem to the same.

Sorry mate, but I concur...this update doesn't do a thing to help......going back to temporary update 3 or maybe 4 in order to work

It's the 3rd update that does work. The 4th won't work. What you could try is to install the 3rd, then install one file out of the 4th, test, extract the next file, test, etc. I don't think any of the files are dependent on each other, so this should work. Unfortunately, this is a very slow way to do things, but we'll know exactly what file causes the trouble. I hope this bug will be fixed soon. It has been causing trouble for too long. We want to PLAY a bit again!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It is a bug, yes, but I know how it's caused. Have you noticed that there are some new buildings in Oxbay port? Some of these have cannons that can actually fire. The problem is that these cannons will support the French when they have control of the town, so you'll get killed by them immediately. Work-around: Talk to the man near the shack, ask him about the new buildings and mention earthquackes. The buildings should now collapse. This problem will be fixed in the next proper update. Unfortunately, I don't know when that update will be released, because at the moment we are fixing some very annoying crashes in the game and I need that fixed before I release the next update. I can't release yet another unplayble version.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I know, sorry for that. I thought I had put everything together that IS working, but I must've made a mistake somewhere. I tested this version myself and noticed the crashes as well; I would've posted on the forum saying that you don't need to test anymore, because I found it bugged myself, but the forum was down, so I couldn't post it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Request to Jason and Long John Silver (and anyone else who might have tested the updates I've been posting):
Can you please make a list of all files that did and didn't work? I want to know which files worked fine and which ones didn't.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

BAHAHAHAHAHA............OK, I'm not losing it.....I sat here and figured okay...1 file at a time, okay we can do this....So here goes, opened up the original 4th update, and there was Programs, and Resources. So I said to myself.......SELF!...you know Jason will start at the top, I "Assumed" I know.....So I opened up the "RESOURCE folder and pulled out "foam" and dragged that into my last working copy of POTC....now I played this last night, with saves from Update 3....it was fine, last night....Today, I don't even leave PORT.....BaMMM! CTD immediately......and guess what....in those foam files there is new reference to Greenford.........I wonder if my theory on Greenford/Oxbay being the cause will hold true!!!!

Have to go to Work soon, have the evening shift, but will test for awhile, but thought to let Pieter know as soon as possible!!

Over to you....if this isn't a good way to test because of something you know that I don't please let me know....but thought one folder at a time was good....Also my saves have been working fine right along, all through all 3 updates as well as new games that I start temporarily. Keep saving my "Save" folder to desktop as "Save update 1" etc....

Then I start new game as well, see how that goes, I figured if I could not get out of Oxbay for the first of the CTD's back a week ago, I won't get out of Oxbay now with the new tests! So I just play through the tutorial see if it works or not!...... Next update I was going for the saves again...still work, then I would start again, and play in Oxbay.......it has been true all along, until 4th update....

Pieter,

The first three temporary up dates seem to have no CTDs of the regular kind. The fouth did not work. I did the combinne the code and non code fixes so I guess I could say the non-code worked fine and helped to speed the game up. I did not test the code fixes separatly.

The last one doesn't work.

Is this what you are looking for?

Non of this is to say that there are not some bugs left in those versions, just not the prominent CTDs.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Still CTD'ing before I leave Port here with the newest setup.....tried the Shipyard, because that seems to trigger the CTD's as well...but didnt today....tried Tavern, nothing....so after awhile went back to sea again...Can't get out of harbour and it CTD's again.....So unless the "foam" files don't work separately or something, there is problem there!!

P.S. Okay, forgot one thing...to Initalize the files...so hit "I" after loading....didn't make a difference....still crashed.....Started Brand new game....It didn't let me down either....tried leaving shipyard in Oxbay tutorial....CTD immediately...

Unless there is a reason those "foam" files will not work in the game, without some other files from that 4th update "not" being in the game also, I feel we have found our offending CTD'ers.....

Thats the way I see it........anyway

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Help Pieter! I know you are not gonna like what I say here, but it needs to be said!!

I figured the next logical step for me here, would be to revert back to update three, and continue testing one file or folder from pack 4 to see what else is working......so I copied the 3 previous updates, the original three....back over my game here. First I played my save from last night....and it crashed as soon as I tried to leave Port. So my game may have crashed last night at the same place....we will never know now! But everything seemed to be working at the time. So I started new game again, Initialized it, and proceeded through tutorial.....crashed in the Shipyard again.....

So now, according to my stuff here.......Pack three is once again "suspected". I'm sorry , I never saw that one coming......Why??? Even Jason at the time said pack 3 worked fine....but it isn't here now....

Got to go now to work.....catch up tonight...please leave some sort of guidance for me to continue.....

I tested pack 3 myself and it actually did work then. However, if you installed the fourth version and after that the 3rd, I think that won't work, because there were some changed files in the 4th that weren't in the 3rd, so they don't get overwritten with their working versions. Actually: This proves that the problematic file was not in the 3rd update at all. So we know that any file that is new in the 4th update might be the cause and any file changed in the 4th update is not. That narrows it down by a bit, so thanks for figuring that out.

You should just extract all RESOURCE files at once; I don't think these are the cause. The problem is somewhere in the PROGRAM folder.

I am currently uploading some new test files that should make the testing easier. Stand by.

I have made two new test versions:

<b><a href="http://pieter.piratesahoy.org/downloads/temp_upd_3-1.zip" target="_blank">Version 3-1</a></b> (9,71 MB)
This is meant to be installed on top of your current installation. No matter which of the previous updates you had installed previously, this file will overwrite them all. (So you shouldn't have to reinstall anything all over again.) I added some files from the 4th update in, but I reckon this version SHOULD work, judging by Long John Silver's previous post. Please test this version for a bit and, if you find it working, proceed to the next stage:

<b><a href="http://pieter.piratesahoy.org/downloads/temp_upd_4-1.zip" target="_blank">Version 4-1</a></b> (44 KB)
This file contains ONLY the files that were unique in the 4th update. Judging by Long John Silver's previous post, one of these files HAS to be the culprit. If you install this all at once, it should introduce the CTDs yet again, so install it one file at a time and test between the adding of the new files. I sincerely hope that this will help us figure out what file causes the trouble.

Please tell me if the 3-1 update doesn't work. For all I know it HAS to, but that's what I thought about the previous update I made as well... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Thanks a very major big lot to Jason and Long John Silver for putting up with all the troubles of testing. I thank you a very big lot. If you didn't do the testing, we wouldn't even be half as far now as we are. Thank you EVER SO MUCH! I hope I can repay you with a good new update once the CTDs are found and killed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Pieter,

This is probably irrelevant, but after yesterdays version crashed, I installed the non code bug fixe over it and it has run without a CTD for hours.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Pieter,

3.1 one is fine. What do you mean install one program at time in 4.1.? Extract one, try it and then extract that one plus one?

Oh, and you are welcome. I enjoy testing and am pleased to have found some way to contribute to all the work that you and the modders do.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

Lord love us Pieter this is the least we can do to help, but I realize you probably would maybe apprecaite some more testers, but oh well....

There is one thing that bothers me now! If you are right and your theory above, explains why my folder isn't working now, after trying to revert back to 3 from 4 this morning.....then we are back to my finding and adding the RESOURCE/foam files this morning which immediately resulted in a massive strike of CTD's that were not present in Version 3 up to date, or last night while I was testing.....So once again....I feel that the foam files are a major cause of the CTD's. Yet you now say that it isn't the RESOURCE files.......And that is where you lost me.......Everything I tested today leads ME to believe that they are....how did you dismiss this so quickly, what do you know that I'm missing, and why should we concentrate on PROGRAM files?

CONFUSED!!!

I don't know anymore Pieter......copied 3.1 over my game and started....CTD leaving Shipyard again.......my game is so frigged up now I don't know what I got and what I don't!

<!--quoteo(post=145935:date=Apr 19 2006, 12:51 AM:name=Jason)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jason @ Apr 19 2006, 12:51 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I meant to extract one file of the 4.1 file, then test, then extract the second, etc.

To Long John Silver: I can't imagine the foam files causing the trouble, because they're only read by the program when the program needs them. And the program only needs them when you land on the appropriate beach/port. The files in the PROGRAM folder, however, are all read at the starting of the game and might cause more major trouble. I once had some missing foam files, but those only caused a crash when I tried to load the location that needed them.
Another note about the foam files: The foam files need their additional .tga.zap file. I don't know what happens if you extract only the .ini file and not the .tga.zap file... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

You did install the 3-1 update on top of your current installation, so I don't understand what is wrong anymore. For all I can figure out, the 3-1 update should work. Could you please make a new installation to make sure you're only having the 3-1 update installed? I don't know what happened to your installation anymore. You could also zip up your PROGRAM folder and send it to me, so I can see what you have installed at the moment. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />
