Heh, yes, I've done that, it's sweeeet! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Try this, fire a volley of ball and then switch to chain - you get two different rounds in one shot! The first time I did that it was entirely unintentional, I hit the wrong key - but surprise, it worked! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Yeah, I've done that, too. I don't use it as often though cause I like to rip the sails out of them completely, especially the pirate hunters, then stand on the deck of my ship and yell across at them, "You found me. It must be your lucky day."

Well, I would have never thought to use the Royal Sloop as my main pirating ship - I'd always gone for pure firepower, and favored the large Frigares, But after using the Royal Sloops everything else seems so slooooow and bulky. I miss all the storage space in the large ships, but when I went back to one after the Royal Sloops it was just too clumsy.

So put me in the Royal Sloop clan! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

*Cues music*

You have been Royally Slooped. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Welcome to the BRIGHT side.. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

If you want storage space, use more than one sloop. Pick a second or even third sloop to use if your flagship gets damaged. You'll need a few more crew, but not that many, have more storage space for goodies, and you don't have to run to a friendly port should the bad guys get a lucky shot in.

I generally sail around in a Large Frigate upgraded to the nines (I "inherrited" from Morgan or Blackbeard - can't remember who). Once you give it all the upgrades it is nice; fast and sleek, it turns well enough and packs one Hell of a punch.

40 cannon? A couple of broadsides from that and anything slows down.

It requires careful handling, but it can reap huge rewards. You have to accept that Pinaces are going to take a powder and disapear over the horrizon unless you can approach them from the right angle and get a few rounds of chain into them - but who bothers with Pinaces anyway? I wouldn't buy a Pinace as a `thank-you` for the tavern wench bringing me a rum . . . . !

Also, the advantage of a single, big, upgraded ship is that you start out tough when you divide the plunder - it can be NASTY if you are trucking around in some little rowboat and three War Galleons drop around your neck when you leave port . . . once you have a price on your head, you need the firepower.

Also, there is something fantastically romantic about a big ship - and, to be fair, I don't play Pirates! to <i>win</i>!

I want the <i>Scythehammer</i> - even if it wasn't a cool ship in terms of the game, my `40-gun` large frigate is beautiful and the second love of Cap'n Darius' life!

Darknight

A frigate - just because its a beuatifull ship, and it gives me the feeling to be a realy nasty pirate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> I don't even think she would be to slow - in good winds i can outrun Sloopsailing piratehunters. So the only real issue is the wide turning arc.

By the way... all the three frigate sizes have the same states according to Piratopedia, but i still have the feeling the larger ones are a little bit harder to turn than the 32 gun version... Is it true or just the feeling ?

I think it's just a feeling. I use Henry's large frigate, and have used Blackbeard's `32-gun` version, and they both handle about the same. It's slow turning into the wind, but that's to be expected, of course. There's not much I can't catch on a `down-wind` run, and nothing I can't rip the rigging out of in two shots.
I keep a Royal Sloop as a `back-up`, however, mostly because the larger crew on the Frigates requires more food on the longer trips. I've also noticed that I can sail into the wind better when the sloop is my flagship. The frigate follows better than it leads.

Actually never tried a war canoe yet,time te give it a whirl <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Aye, a tricked out war canoe kin dance around Montalban an' grape him down easily 'till it be boardin' time! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Arrr! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate_plain.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p3" border="0" alt="pirate_plain.gif" />

The best ship ever is the Brig of War. She´s got the same number of cannons and cargo as the frigate, but a decidedly tighter turn. Absolutely perfect. Pity is, I just lost my fully upgraded Brig of War and had to sail around on a treasure galleon <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

war canoe with full upgrades is perfect for boarding.
however war bri is maybe better for raiding and figths.

For boarding? You ´ll have to be a real good fencer, then, lest your crew gets slaughtered before you can beat the enemy captain. As well, once hit by a full broadside, you´re swimming.

Aye, the trick be not te let em give ye a full broadside shot, unless ye luv te swim <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I never seem to be able to avoid that. And I believe in manpower and guns just as much as in agility. Different philosophy, I guess.

Aye mate,a matter O' personel taste,fer meself itssometh'n gratify'n about captur'n sump'n bigger that you are <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Arrrr! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

First off... let s start by removing that swoop from the list aye?
because if the sloop is a "ship" than soon we are going to see pirates raiding villages in tea cups..

the swoop is a fast ship ok..

what i like most is it s turning radius... but how can a 20 cannon ship stand against two galleons? yeah.. you can shoot avoid for 10 hours.. and maybe (iuf never get hit.. and that s easy if you are playing qualified or sub par status)
you get em..

also even if it s a "fast" ship, it doesn t go against the wind half as good as a brigantine!

and what about cargo space?
you are going to need a slow cargo ship to take em, wich will slow ye down.. and you ll need to waste man power on em..
and a max crew of 120... hope you are not planning to raid a capital without the helpo f seven indian tribes..

in my opinion.. if i would use a small ship i would go for a nice pinnacee or a postal, it has less cannons.. but with those small ships you scurely ain t aiming at firepower aint ya?
so when you go against a low crew ship you can hit it ASAP and go into battle with the captain..
but remember that those fast ship that rely soo heavily on speed have "small" sails, just take some chain shot and you ll be slower than a trade galleon..

frigate is nicer....
you got 10 more cannons than a brig would have... nice cargo.. and you get a nicer top speed.. but as the sloop the frigate has really hard times going against the wind..

also the turning radius of a frigate is ridicolously wide.. if you are planning to avoid a 40 cannon galleon you re better off being scure you have the wind in the right spot because there is no way you can dodge their shooting with that ridicle turning radious..

now.. the BEST ship (for veteran pirates as me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> ) is scurely the brigantine of war!

with his 32 cannons it has enough firepower to intimidate every ship,
is speed when the wind is in the right spot is scurely not as good as a fast ship, but when the wind is against ya try going with a swoop: it will push you back!!
while if you are good witha brigantine you can outspeed EVERY boat in the game when the wind is against ya..

the tactic is: have the slow big boats attack you from against the wind (while you are with teh wind with you) so you can just have fun having em trying to reach ya while you bomb em avaoiding every shot..

while when you are facing faster ship make your way against the wind (so if they go with the wind they get into your mouth) so if they try to escape you ll get em because there s no ship that can outrun a brig against the wind..

i admitt tough that against a fast pinnache you scurely ahve to be an "expert": expecially if you aren t against the wind or the wind isn t strong enough you ahve to be fast hitting their sails (just some cannon balls to hit em and their sailswill be almost destroyed.. making em sooo slow)
but, after all, i prefer to have an hard time against those 10 luxuy carrying smugglers than against the spanish treasure fleet <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

True enuff sloop doesn't sail well against de win in battle so I'd not be put'n meself in that position,Always attack wid de wind in yer favor, what I'd be like'n is de royal sloop wid cotton sails an copper plate'n can turn on a dime an give ye a nickel back,so at full speed ye can do a tight turn an put yerself wid de wind at yer back an also avoid enemy cannon fire whilst pepper'n his sails ur crew. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
