Yep found that SOTL you guys were talking about, just before it sank me with one salvo <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

Oh well i was going to retire soon anyways <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Brigs are too slow for me. Regarding numbers I prefer to travel with one ship, two at the max. More ships slow you down, even if they are of the same speed.

I most like the frigates. They can carry the crew needed for big raids, the guns to get rid fast of annoying hunters who normally don't have much loot anyway and they are as fast as sloops (if a bit less agile). Keeping an eye on wind direction and using the clouds (in other words: SAILING <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ) it's no problem travelling eastward with them IMO.

What I'd like to try out is a mailrunner though. Fully equipped it should be better than a Royal Sloop, if you can use the speed and agility to make up for the slightly smaller crew and firepower.

BTW, what's this with Henry Morgan? He's really not hard to get, yesterday I started a new game (on rogue) got lucky and found out about Morgan's base right away, went there with my Pinnace (not even fully stocked with men and far from being fully equipped) and just shoved the fat old man overboard... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Ive often found the way the game works is the things you attempt to do early with your young healthy captain are all far easier to pull off then the old retiring fellow at the end. Go after the old pirates early, and your far too much of a young whipper snapper for them <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Travelling with ships I always try to keep an escape ship in tow, you never know <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

To each his own. Since I like the frigates so much going after ol' Henry right at the start is perfect for me. "Thanks for the ship, pops!" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Royal Sloop , but them Mail Runners are great , fully upgraded , I keep it every time I divide the plunder , makes things interesting <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

It is a small, fast and maneuverable ship built along the same general lines as the Pinnace, but larger and better armed.
PG. 97 US version of the manual for description
PG `106-107` for stats.

They are used by governors to deliver ultimatums and such, (i.e. mail), usually you are asked to escort them. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

thanks

Thanks dude, might get one and try it out <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

mean little ship

wow impressive stats, whats it like for taking damage? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

Cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I have never used one, so I am not sure about its ability to absorb damage. But I can make a general guess. Sale fast and not in a straight line for very long. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

While not the sturdiest of ships, the damn buggers can zig zag through enemy fire like nobody's business. Mail Runner is quickly becoming one of my fave ships, but it still doesn't beat the Royal Sloop, but my Royal's at full upgrades. Once I get full upgrades on the Mail Runner I have, we'll see where it's standings are.

Best ship by far is the Royal Sloop.
Fast, extremely maneuvarible and 20 cannon with 187 men upgraded.
So enough firepower to stand against every enemy and so agile you can avoid most hits.

Mail Runner with all the goodies. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> Most agile and fast ship. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
I love it when I can dance around the the warships, and rip them apart with grapeshot. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

I'm going to chime in here with the chorus about that Mail Runner, WHOOO! Very nice! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Welcome Etcheverria <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

And Royal sloop is my favorite also. As I have posted in another thread about ships.

Royal Sloop, 20 guns, 183 men (w. Triple Hammocks) all the way baby. Why? Because it's got a tight turning, and it's fast, show me any other ship can do that?

Sure the Mail Runner, Pinnace and War Canoe have Very Tight turning and are very fast, but doesn't quite cut in number of men.

Larger than the sloop, we've got a Brig of War, but it's medium turning and medium speed, but you say tomato, I say toMAto...

Dusk, 187 men with triple hammocks. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

True, Mail Runners cargo capacity is half of the Royal Sloop, so food may become problem with full crew and long voyage. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I usually sail with 70 men, so with full cannons and food, it lasts 7 months. Enough to get supplies. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> But each according to his/her own style. I either snipe enemys guns from distance and blast them with grapeshot, or board quickly. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Mail Runner is my favourite for the 3 reasons:

- Its fast and maneuverable, more so than Sloop. I be able to get from the left side of the carribean to the right side of the carribean in 3 or less months. Other is more like 5 to 10 months.

- Its easy to outflank with this than other ships. Although a shot or two will mean complete crippilation of the Main Runner, your more than likely going to be able to get behind or out maneuver the Frigate or Heavy Frigate (never tried SOTL but its prolly based on a Frigate anyway). And what this means is that you can pepper it with cannon balls and Grape Shot (if you get behind them) until you feel ready to board them.

- Crew is good size: 120 people is enough for most or all voyages, if you wanna take over a town simply just fight and beat a merchantman and loadem up for pillaging. Having more is just not worth it, besides makes the men happy if the number is small and I never fought in battle over 300 men yet, I prolly still be able to beatem :p. Cause of Ship Bonuses as well.

As noted the only gripe is perhaps the weak hull and sail. Where one hit can mean doom. But more likely than not you can outflank a Frigate anyway.

As for Frigate, prolly a ship for battle, but ONLY for battling, I dont think its used to be able to plunder cause of its problems of speed and manueverability, also its a big ship so its easy to get hit than Mail Runner. Still Frigate is a fantastic ship (Large Frigate = EVEN BETTER, so SOTL = Havent seen yet <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> ), cause I like blasting them in a 30+ number of cannons on my broad side <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />.
