Where did you encounter a Royal Sloop? I'm trying to get a hand on one of those babies the entire game and havent seen a single one? Who has them? The Dutch or the English? And where?
 
Many times, when you are given the task of escorting a Mayor to become a Gov, he will be in a "Royal Sloop".
 
Man, I only get Sloops of War and Mail Runners! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> Lousy Spanish, I have a price of over 50,000 on me head and the only things they send after me are Sloops of War.
 
Well, the Spanish have a proce of over 100'000 on my head and all they send after me are Royal Sloops... It may, indeed, have something to do with how dangerous they think you are...
 
The royal sloops seem to be more common in 1680 than any other time period. I've got the same situation going in my game, the Spanish REALLY hate little old me... Well, me sees I be in minority. Brigantine be best fer me dodgin' an' strikin' style. Sloops hav too lil' guns (though they're really quick) an' caravels hav too lil' turnin' power (though they be tougher). Brigantine's da answer to wot da Romans been speakin' ov: "Aurea Mediocritas"(Golden Mean). An' 'tis da way I like it.<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I still swear by Frigates, unless they came out with a `multi-player` game, in which case I'd want something much faster cause all you sloop drivers would kick my butt.
 
I sail in a Large Frigate, which is not only fast, but has better points of sail than any sloop. Only difference being that tight turning radius... I think when I finally decide to divide the plunder I'll first go to a smaller but still speedy ship to finish out my game... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Dunno, tho, I really like having those points of sail... My buddy finally found (and took) a SOL. It's like a large Frigate, only meaner, He sunk a treasure Galleon in 2 broadsides. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
 
BTW, Cat, since you're a frigate driver, have you tried firing a btoadside while turning? Since all he guns don't fire at once, I fire long range shots at smaller ships while I'm turning so I gat a sort of shotgun spray pattern. It helps hit those fast little guys who are standing off from you.
For the small guys who charge you, load with chain shot, wait about `3-4` seconds and fire. They will still be out of chain range, but will sail right into the shot. It takes a little practice to get the timing right, but when you get it, it's like magic.
