Silent Hunter 3 and 4

not a good idea to loose your head in such a situation. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Back sail'n the S class boats, they really do grow on you after a while, so modded S-42 class so you start with with her plus a 20mm gun to go with the 5 incher, also added my fav emblem thanks to a tutoral by the Belgian at SubSim, takes more work to add them then SH3 fer sure <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Was play'n around with AA settings to set up my new video card and when pressed all battlestations button, my crew lost their heads. lol <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Now that's losing your head in battle! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

How is the new card working out?

Great card, Leadtek 7600 GT to go with a new rig had custom built, originally had Pentium 4 D 3.0 Ghz,swapped that for a E6600 dual core 2.4 Ghz 1066 FSB and 4MB L2 Cache, with Arctic Pro 7 cooler over stock cooler keeps things nice and Kool.with OCZ Platinum 2 x 1GB Ram, Overall am very happy with it. I haven't overclocked the cpu or video card yet, seem really fast the way it is, way superior to the Pentium D

final results after setting up new system to play SH4, almost all settings ingame and Nvidia control panel set high
[attachment=1061:S_242_2.jpg]

A bit if a story behind the picture,
Mission objective is to drop off six commandos on this isolated shore, having done that decided to motor around for a short time not wanting to waste to much fuel and before radio in my position to SubPac and receive new orders. Standing on the bridge ,View was spectacular, water was almost glass like, gulls swopping through the air, sound of diesel engines churning the water listening to a Glen Miller tune on the Gramaphone is very tranquill 10 minutes then radio man tells me received new orders for patrol grid. I'm told to head for Lunzo straight due north to Patrol grid and cause as much havoc as possible with Jap shipping and possibilty of running into battle groups is high. After enjoying my short site seeing tour plotted course for North end of Lunzo Straight and went topside to have one last look about. Orderd Helmsman to Dive the boat, periscope depth as I climbed back down into the command room, the S-245 started to slip below the water, I heard the Diesels shut down and switch to Electrics and all too familiar sound,Back to the war and business at hand. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Harrrr! Ol' Salt matey, did ok, made it out alive lol.
Bagged 2 large Oiltankers and a Large merchant for about 30,000 tons in a large convoy. S-42 class has only 12 fish so I use them wisely for maximum tonnage. Snuck into the middle of the convoy, fired two fish only at each oiltanker, targetting the engine room and bow, this most times will cripple oiltankers not often sinks them. A single fish sunk large merchant.
By this time the 4 DD have a ruff idea of my location, after letting loose 5 fish orderd crash dive to 250', puts me below the thermal layer and plot course for nearest O.T. at 2 knots. You can see my orange sub marker with escorts trying to pin me
[attachment=1068:tanker.jpg]

After positioning my sub as close to one of the burning tankers, order all stop, sit tight listening on the hydrophones, Escorts cannot find my location so they bugger off. Wait till nightfall, surface the boat and finish off burning tankers with deck gun, still need to have caution as the Tankers had a 4" gun mounted on the bow.
Having completed patrol objectives,still have 7 fish and a boat load of fuel, radiod status report to HQ and received new oders for a photo shoot of a Jap Harbour in South China Sea.
Not playing to much at the moment as Ubisoft is releasing new patch with'n weeks and info on the patch looks very promising. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Got the Patch 1.3 for SH4 although not officialy released yet. The patch was leaked on German UBI forum so have been testing it. also thanks to a mate over at Subsim for the tip.

New Pearl Harbour: Battleship row, sunken BB now in Pearl Harbor, looks real devastating

New Radar finaly works the way it was supposed to so far <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Arr, now go out an avenge her!

Yarrr! Ol' Salt matey, easier said than done , but I'd be doing my best, this game rocks if ye be into commanding a sub, can be real boring at times sailing between objectives or even freelancing, more than makes up for it when the action starts flyng, nuth'n makes yer heart pump faster when yer being depth charged by a DD and pressing yer depth to avoid the ash cans. As much as I luv Pirate Games and I'm partial to POTC with all the fantastic mods that have been done,I'm alsol luv this game for its ability to make you use your brains, Yep I said it, this is not a sail around shoot em up game, this game is by far the best Naval realistic game providing ye have the heart for it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I know exactly what you mean, that's what was so addicting about Silent Service. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />

Doing anuther upgrade to my rig, bought a 8800GTS and PCI-Express MB,with 2 gigs 800MHZ Ram, with E6600 dual core, and MB was DOA <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> had to RMA it

so will have to wait to Play SH4 til new MB arrives.In the meantime will proccupy meself <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Got my rig up an running, can now play SH4 with AA and AF x16, all graphics settings in Nvidia control panel and ingames settings maxed. Just in time as Trigger Maru 1.4 was just recently released with new graphic pack mod as well as many new tweaks and I must say the game looks and plays beautifully. Started a New Career with a new S-42 class sub with new high rez skin by FooFighter along with TM new a high rez interior instruments and ocean waves. Completed a commando insertion objective and am orderd to Luzon straights where sank a large composite freighter, she must have been carrying ammo cause the whole deck was in flames after huge balls of fire lit up the night skies. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Moonlit cruise <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

[attachment=1082:moonlight.jpg]

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Ol' Salt matey, game is runn'n smooth.
Ducimus TM 1.5 mod was just released yesterday. This is a must have mod as it combines the best mods available, Leo: living breathing ocean, Tater's: new campaign files and many more great mods along with Ducimus own tweeks and his new construction set.
Start the game by in career and click on Year 1941 and you see New Construction Set, this will trigger Sea Trials where you as a new commander will be orderd to put your Gato through its paces. Valuable to new players, and fun to do even for seasoned skippers. Once completed Sea Trials, use the telephone to transfer to Pearl. Warning! the last segment is to evade Dinsdale, if he detects you, kiss yer arse goodbye. He won't let go until your sunk.
Currently just transferd to Pearl in a new career, so no SBoats this time.Plan on play'n the game the way Ducimus intended it to be played <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well tried Pearl Harbour command and just wasn't for me. Sea Trials great stuff, but Pearl ain't for me. Miss my Sugar boat and thar be sumpt'n to be said for Aussie ports <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> did try a transfer to Duth Harbour whar ye can lay hands on an Sboat, just not enuff action to be had. Graphics pack add on in TM 1.5 is nuth'n less than spectacular, tones down Jap airtraffic some as it's a bit much.
Started new career again out of Manila and glad I did, first objective is to drop off much needed supplies off the coast of Mindanao.

Supply Drop
[attachment=1088:supplies.jpg]

Completing my first objective, sent Status report radio message to SubComPac and received new orders to patrol Luzon Staright, having been there before was not expect'n anything exciting to happen and was pretty much right. Completed Patrol area Luzon and now orderd to head for South China Sea.
Plotted a course betwwen two small Islands enter'n South China Sea, travel'n on surface, weather being calm and good visibily, Watch shouted out Warship spotted sir!, Immediatly orderd Crash Dive , Battlestations, set to Periscope Depth. switching to Nav map, multiple contacts were showing and Sonarman is tell'n me warship closing fast. Raised periscope to take a peek and Dam! task force of 2 Isle class BB, Heavy and light cruiser with several DD charging almost straight at me. Quickly opend all tubes, set torp depth to 10 Ft. Silent running on, plotted a course to intercept, and this is done ASAP as TF generaly travel 12 t0 20 knots. Haven't had a lot of practice on manual targeting, this my first crack at a BB with MT. Having ID ship, estimated speed and AOB, sent data to TDC, fired a spread of 4 fish at closest BB at 1700 yards, had not been detected yet, not wanting to take chances, ordered crash dive, set depth to 250 feet. Three of the 4 fish hit home, She listed heavily to starboard and capsized. What a thrill, first BB on manual targeting.

Japs abandon ship
[attachment=1090:SH4Img_4...30.37_31.jpg]

After some cat and mouse with escorts, made my escape to the South China Seas to continue Patrol orders. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Started off with a BB on your patrol. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> Did you get any others?

Did run into a second Task Force in this patrol, couple of Kongo BB in Lunzo Staright, light cruiser and escorts,TF was doing 17 knots and from my curent location was barley able to intercept. Managed to get 2 fish at a bad angle on bow , thought were good hits, but she sailed on at 17 knots with some smoke trail'n her <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> Can't sink em all <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> all in all was not a bad patrol when finished, keep in mind TM builds is not like stock game, you actualy have to hunt for targets like a real sub commander, this is not a shooting gallery type mod. Game has easy settings for newcomers, so play patched 1.3, when you become comftorable with auto targeting , evading escorts, Load TM mod with graphics pak and switch to manual targeting and it gets as real as you can possibly think to commanding a real sub. Game play is awsome, nuth'n like being caught with your pants down so to speak <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> and getting depth charged, is incredibly real, you best have your best guys on repair and know your subs capabilities ur ye can kiss yer arse goodbye <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> This game has the best graphics you will see for current games which adds to realism with TM 1.6 which includes Leo LBO ocean mod, more realistic waves will make you seasick on your bridge if you don't have the sealegs for it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> improved sky's and Tater's new campaign layers with Ducimus tweaks, this ia a must have mod after getting your feet wet with stock game an Patch 1.3.
Down side is you need at least 7600 AGP video card best to have 2GB ram and 3GHZ cpu and tone down graphic settings will play OK 25 to 35 FPS is good.
For full eye candy and best peformance PCI express is the way to go. 8800 GTS, 2GB ram and 6600 dual core cpu, win XP will double or more yer PC performance with SH4 and OTHER GAMES as well over AGP system. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yep, that is the way to go. With anything coming out now, it seems. I'm shopping around for a new computer now that the Core 2 Duo cpu is out. I have a Mac with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB memory and its blazing fast. I want to get a PC with that also for gaming. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

And I know about getting caught by a destroyers depth chargers and not being able to get away and slowly sinking to the bottom while you pray your repair crew can deliver you from certain death. I'm always talking about Silent Service because your descriptions of this one remind me a lot of it, although it would be absolutely prehistoric compared to Silent Hunter 4. Sid Meier did it though so you know that it was great for its time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> And that aspect that you describe, like being depth charged into oblivion, was in that game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

When I'm able to play Silent Hunter 4 with all the eye candy and best performance, I'll definitely get it.

Here's a little info about Silent Service, the granddaddy of these sub games I guess.

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Service_(video_game)" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Service_(video_game)</a>

Aye! Silent Service in its time is a grand game, although never played it. Trigger Marau 1.6 mod by Ducimus was just released yesterday and have to start a new career again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> well worth it though, Leo improved LBO ocean mod, seedler snd Krillers improved graphics, Tater's improved campaign layers,Ducimus fine tweaks, can't say enuff about this mod. Ocean waves and colors are out of this world, improved sky textures <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />
[attachment=1118:SH4Img_1...50.5_718.jpg] [attachment=1119:SH4Img_2...12.24_62.jpg]

Once again out of Manila with my favorite Sugar Boat, headed for Lunzo Straight, Know in the past have run into 2 Task Forces and managed one kill, a Kongo BB, not sure if this was to be again cause Tater's improved campaign files in TM 1.6 may have changed this. North of Lunzo ran into first Task Force, this is becoming a ritual as restarted so many New Careers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Took a bead on first Kongo BB, fired a spread of three fish, all good hits , took half an hour real time for her to sink. As usual was detected immediatly affter firing fish, so was time to get out of Dodge. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
[attachment=1120:SH4Img_2...9.15_468.jpg]

After eluding usual barrage of DD, escaped unscathed, completed patrol objective, sent radio report and was orderd to East China Sea, hoping to capitalize on that second Task Force which Iv'e not been able to do till now. To my crew and sub pleasant suprise, made contact with a large Task Force consisting of 2 Isle class BB, 2 Heavy Cruisers, Usual assortment of DD and light Cruisers and trailing near the back of T.F. is a Taiyo Class Escort Carrier. Did not get a heads up on location of T.F. from Compac Sub like usualy happens, my Sonar Man picked them up, so they were almost on top of me steaming at 17 knots.
Ended up in the middle of the pack and fortunatly was not detected but my bow was pointed in wrong direction from BB and Escort Carrier, Orderd hard to port and stayed at 2 knots not wanting to be detected, Crap! BB and CArrier steaming at 17 knots and here I am with my sub arse backwards, Sugar Boats have no stern tubes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Anyhow BB sailed right on pass with no good angle bow shots for me. Swung my scope over to Carrier hopeing for my only chance. Not to be I thought, so figured at a bad bow angle of 60 degrees fired a spread of 3 fish, first two missed, third one blew a hole near bow. Knowing full well one fish ain't gonna sink a Carrier was pretty dissapointed with myself having missed another grand opporunity. I watched her with a full steam of 17 knots continue her journey. Of course was immediatley jumped on by escorts and played cat & mouse for 45 minutes eluding them by doubling back to direction of Task Force came to periscope depth to take a look around, spotted a blinking light in distance, couldn't be escort as they were in opposite direction, Orderd 4 Knots to put more distance beteen escorts and made heading for blinking light. There she was,Dam! one Taiyo Carrier sitt'n dead in the water with a slight list to port side, musta pulled the engine crew to help repair. Couldn't believe my luck <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Plotted course to come around to her starboard side and fired all my remaining fish, all good hits and she refused to go down <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> Surfaced my boat and finished her off with Deck Gun, you know she's done for when ye see liferafts being launched like the one in this picture.
[attachment=1121:SH4Img_2....8.0_343.jpg]

Finished off East China Sea Objective with 2 x large Merchant about 13000 tons, 32000 tons for BB, just over 17000 tons for Carrier, sail'n home with about 62000 tons. Their will be large ration of rum for all crew, medals and promotions to be had. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Can you pick those guys off in the liferafts? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
