Silent Hunter 3 and 4

skull

Sea Dog
After shelving this game after only 8 patrols due to SF tech probs,now resolved <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Started on 8th patrol,it was my 9th patrol things really started happening. hers a pics of my U55 VC11B sub

[attachmentid=451]

anyhow,started on my 9th patrol and was orderd to patrol grid AN13,after completing orders you are free to hunt wherever you please.Decided to head for coast of Ireland for some juicy targets in shipping lanes,arriving off the coast of Ireland,started a sweep of grid BF13 when BDU radio message came thru,Large enemy convoy spotted grid BF13 at 5 knots,plotted a course for interception,which would put my sub approxamatly in the middle of the convoy.My strategy is at this point I can hide my sub in the noise from convoy ships,escorts slow down to 5 knots to sweep for subs making them easy targets.Arriving at my interception point ahead of convoy at periscope depth,did a hydrophone sweep an picked up engine noise from convoy.Switched to Nav map which showed me 14 ships steaming toward my position.my calculations for intercept were bang on,my positioning would be about in the middle of the pack.Also Nav map showed 4 Destroyer escorts,this was not going to be an easy task.Fired a fish at a T3 tanker and split him in two,escorts detected me an slowed to 5 knots to do sweep,between sinking other ships and manouvering sub around for best shooting positions managed to sink all 4 escorts and accomplish my best tonnage sunk score,also my flak gunner shot down 4 aircraft as well,resulting in several awards an promotions for my crew and myself.There are 2 log pages,only showed last page for total tonnage.

This is a very good game, highly recommended for history buffs or people that feel the pleasure of sinking big and heavy lol.

Aye O.P.,Iv'e yet to come across a battlegroup,Aircraft carrier ur a King George Battleship would be a nice trophy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
on my 11 th patrol however came across 2 convoys steaming in the same direction, one behind the other, but distance was to far away for my sub to catch them as I was head'n for BE quadrant as report indicated heavy single merchant traffic.Arrived at quadrant when Sonar picked up a single merchant moving slow,orderd helmsmen to make for merchant and came across a lone T3 Tanker,after a few minutes Sonar also picked up warship long range heading in my direction.at periscope dpeth fired a torp at T3 which impacted mid ship slow'n her down to 2 knots,surfaced sub to finish her off with deck guns not wanting to waste a second torp.

[attachmentid=463]

After tanker slipped under the waves,the destroyer was very close in range and I was in not in good position to get off a bow ur stern shot at him,so orderd depth 50 meters and asked sonar to follow nearest warship contact,only choice was to evade and outrun her.

[attachmentid=464]

Trying to make sub as small a target as possible so destroyer couldn't get a fix on my position to DC me to Davy Jones Locker,I was succesfull in evading her,although she was at times close enuff to my sub you could spit on her.You can see the stern of the T3 tanker I sunk hang'n up out of the water off the bow of the destroyer.Destroyer has detected me and is now ping'n my sub for fixed location which de does not get.

[attachmentid=465]

What I did not know,was that the destroyer was an escort for a convoy that was steaming in a northly direction off my starboard,somehow BDU missed this convoy as I did not receive any radio messages.Sonar picked up multiple merchants and warships as were trying to evade above detsroyer,and where there is one escort,there is bound to be more and with the loss of suprise attack,figured I was in for a pounding.
Luckily was able to evade the destoyer and other convoy escorts and made my way further into quadrant BE when came across another T3 Tanker,appears to be my lucky day as C3 Cargo ships and T3 tankers are prime merchant targets,sank her with one torp and immediatly picked up a C3 Cargo ship steaming in my direction.Orderd intercept course and set up a good shooting position

[attachmentid=466]

Fired Torp at 500 meters and surfaced sub to finish her off with deck guns if need be,was not neccessary as torp split C3 in two

[attachmentid=467]

after concluding my patrol of quadrant and assigned grid patrol from BDU,My crew an myself sunk over 86000 tons ,surpassing my first post score of over 74000 tons,again I'm only showing 2nd of 2 pages of log book for total tonnage

[attachmentid=468]

Fine patrol and I have to tell you,it gives you a thrill like no other game when warship{s} detect you and start DC your sub,Lights flicker an the sub shakes violently,wheter your looking internal or external camera view when this is happening,its quite a feel and a sight to see.Greatest satisfaction is when you slip away unscathed and arrive home with a full crew and little or no damage to your sub,and a long list of merchants and warships at the bottom of the ocean <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Once I went my sub sank to the bottom remiscient of Das Boot, it was s race against the clock to repair as fast as I could and try to go to the surface before my sub flooded. Sadly I was not quick enough and became part of the sea bed.

Once I put my sub on ocean floor and killed engines,worked well enuff though,destroyer got bored and buggerd off which made my crew very happy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Play'n around with Single Missions,sink the carrier task group.I got a chance to try out X11 type sub,she's a real beaut to be sure.Quite a bit larger than my V11B which I'm also fond of.This single mission is a lot of fun as you get a chance to sink 2 Illustrious carriers and and a Bogue escort carrier while being hounded by numerous destroyers and cruisers.Managed to sink one of the illustrious carriers and badly damaged another while this escort carrier managed to aquire a torp in the rear disabling her engine and causing her stern to sink somewhat.

[attachmentid=470]

hers a pic of my sub hiding under carrier from destroyer and planes circling above,I lost this mission cause if you look at the stern of my sub,depth charges destroyed my rudder,so I'm dead meat <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

[attachmentid=471]

Ah, that sub is a beau indeed. I forgot what VII I loved using. It was the one that allowed you to have up to four AA guns.......I loved being on the surface so those AA guns were a must for me.

Aye matey,V11C after 43 I think ye upgrade conning tower with 2 flak guns,a must for those nasty RAF pilots
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Pick'n up a copy of expansion pack for SH3 called Seawolves,adds new skin subs,fifty some ports an cites,more convoy traffic and mission packs, many more features,should get it this thursday, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I think that exp pack had some controversy to it, many people complained it just compiled a ton of peoples mods, put it in a box and put a price tag on it. But still....it is convient to get all that great stuff you menttioned in one box.

Aye,it definetly cause some controversy,however the Grey Wolfe mod is almost 4 hour download time fer me,so if ye ever need to reinstall,it really sucks time wise,so opted to buy expansion pack,2 minutes to install is much more effecient fer me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Started a new game fer the helluv it until expansion pack arrives.Type 11D sub required for longer ranges as the type 11B starter sub very limited in range.Both subs torpedo loadout is only 5 bow torps,so need to use em wisely.Left Wilmhaven port an sailed to patrol grid an did my usual 24 hour patrol required by BDU,after that decided to head fer Liverpool figur'n thar'd be some juicy targets,possibly battleship ur carrier <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> Rounded the tip of Scapaflow and sailed towards Liverpool travel'n on the surface at night and submerged during day to save on fuel..Just off the coast O' Ireland BDU reports task force travel'n slow in same grid my sub was travel'n,me lucky day me thinks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Switching to my Navigation map,plotted an intercept course and was jest a matter O' sitt'n an waiting.My sonar man suddenly pipes up an tells me: Contact sir!Warship closing,contact sir!merchant closing.Orderd periscope depth and raised periscope ter see these beauties. Auxiliary Cruiser up front,about 14000 tons O' scrap metal by the time I'm done he. he
[attachmentid=593]

In nice shoot'n position,fired 2 torps at about 1400 meters,the first one hit midship,second torp hit engine compartment leav'n her dead in the water
[attachmentid=594]

Dam ship wouldn't sink though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> with only 2 torps left and the crew were load'n them from reserves,checked load'n time ,it would take 7 minutes to load with destroyers now head'n in me general direction.With nuth'n else to do took a peek arou'n an saw a T2 Tanker an C2 Cargo ships follow'n behind the stricken cruiser,when suddenly the Auxiliary Cruiser burst into flames and finaly sank,leav'n me with two torps,one fer T2 tanker an C2 Cargo <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
[attachmentid=595]
So that what happend mates,sunk the Auxiliary cruiser,scratched the T2 Tanker,an C2 Cargo for about 32,000 tons, Trying te make me escape,almost got meself run over by anuther cargo ship,had te throw her in reverse an crash dive to avoid being opened up like a tin can.All in all, fun mission with decent action <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
[attachmentid=596]

Gaamespot has some info on SHIV along with seventeen awsome screenies, someof it is concept art,they did say they redid the engine .<a href="http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/sim/silenthunter4/screenindex.html" target="_blank">http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/sim/silenthunter4/screenindex.html</a>

Looks really good, maybe it will quell some critics of the game who are disapointed it wont be in the Atlantic again, then again, maybe not.
