<b>Landlord takes tenant's toilet, gets $10,000 fine</b>
<i>He wanted woman and her child to leave, so he took fixtures, brother says.</i>

updated 11:34 a.m. ET, Fri., Jan. 23, 2009
SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. - A landlord was fined nearly $10,000 for removing the toilet and other fixtures from a basement apartment to get his tenant to move out.

The Rockland Board of Health issued the fine to Fausto Pinos on Wednesday. He had been charged with 24 housing code violations for conditions in the building in Spring Valley, a town north of New York City.

"The people living there were subjected to appalling conditions that were not fit for human habitation," said Dr. Jeffrey Oppenheim, the health board's president. "It was just disgusting."

Pinos, of Bushkill, Pa., did not appear at the meeting, but his brother, Jesus Pinos, speaking on his behalf, said the landlord did not dispute the charges. He said Pinos thought that removing the toilet, bathtub, sink, oven and countertop would force the woman and her child to move.

County officials had been tipped off to problems in the apartment in early November by an agency that was trying to help the woman. Inspectors found numerous health and safety violations, including a roach infestation and sewage in the bathtub. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sick.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eww" border="0" alt="sick.gif" />

The Department of Health issued emergency violations letters to Fausto Pinos on Nov. 5, according to records. When inspectors visited the apartment again Nov. 17, they discovered that the toilet and other fixtures had been removed.

The tenant told inspectors that Pinos removed the items the day before and told her to leave. But she said she had no other place to go.

The Department of Social Services helped relocate the woman and her child.

There was no listing for a Fausto Pinos in Bushkill, Pa.

By M.R. KROPKO – 5 hours ago

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) — A judge Monday rejected the defense that a teenage boy opened fire on his family because he was addicted to video games, convicting him of wounding his clergyman father and killing his mother after they fought over a game. Lawyers for Daniel Petric, 17, didn't contest that the boy shot his parents in October 2007, but insisted his youth and video game addiction made him less responsible.

Common Pleas Judge James Burge disagreed and pointed to evidence the boy plotted the crime for weeks.

Petric was convicted of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and other charges. He faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison without parole. The judge didn't set a sentencing date.

Prosecutors said Petric planned to kill his parents because he was angry that his father would not allow him to play the video game "Halo 3," in which players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

During the trial, deputy prosecuting attorney Anthony Cillo described Petric as a cold, calculating killer who plotted to murder his parents, Mark and Susan Petric, and make it appear to be a murder-suicide by putting the gun in his father's hand.

Defense Attorney James Kersey has said that Petric was obsessed with the "Halo" series of video games, which he played 18 hours a day when he had the chance. Petric used his father's key to open a lockbox and remove a 9 mm handgun and the game.

Mark Petric, who is a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, testified that his son came into the room and asked: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."

The father testified that he expected a pleasant surprise. Then his head went numb from a gunshot and he survived. His wife, Susan, 43, died of gunshot wound to the head.

Kersey said during the trial that when the teenager fled the grisly scene, he only took one item with him: the "Halo 3" game.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Man hid birds in pants</b>

MELBOURNE - AN AUSTRALIAN man was caught with two live pigeons stuffed in his trousers as he got off a flight from the Middle East, authorities said on Tuesday.

Customs officers body-searched the 23-year-old after he was allegedly found with two bird eggs in a vitamin container in his pocket during baggage checks at Melbourne Airport on Sunday.

'The man was taken to a private interview room and Customs and border protection officers found he was wearing tights with a live pigeon concealed in each leg,' Customs said.

The man, who had come off a ten-hour flight from Dubai, was also allegedly carrying plant seeds in a money belt and eggplant samples in his bag.

'Wildlife smuggling is not only cruel to the animals involved, it poses a severe risk to the Australian environment and the health of the Australian community,' said Customs wildlife spokesman Richard Janeczko.

The offences carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and a A$110,000 fine (S$106,000). -- AFP<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

A man has died after his mobile phone exploded, bursting an artery in his neck, it has been reported.

Last Updated: 2:37PM GMT 04 Feb 2009

The shop worker from Guangzhiu, China, died moments after he put a new battery in his phone, it has been claimed.

It was believed that he may have just finished charging the battery and had put the phone in his breast pocket when it exploded.

China's daily Shin Min Daily News said the accident happened on Friday, Jan 30, at 7.30pm. An employee at the shop told local media that she heard a loud bang and saw her colleague lying on the floor of the shop in a pool of blood. The employee said the victim had recently changed the battery in his mobile phone.

Police are investigating what caused the explosion and whether the phone was counterfeit.

The make and model of the phone are not thought to be known.

Local reports said that this was the ninth recorded cellphone explosion in China since 2002.

The Shin Min daily News published advice for consumers on how to avoid being hurt by exploding mobile phones, following the latest incident.

Some of the tips were:

– Always use original batteries.

– Do not expose your mobile phone to high temperatures, and avoid exposing it to direct sunlight.

– Avoid long phone conversations.

<b>Doctors Pull Screws, Nails From Metal-Eating Man</b>
Reuters

LIMA

Doctors in a coastal town in northwestern Peru have rescued the innards of a 38-year-old man by removing 17 metal objects -- among them nails, a watch clasp and a knife -- that he ate. Luis Zarate was taken to the regional hospital of Trujillo earlier this week by his family after complaining of sharp stomach pains. Doctors took X-rays of his chest that showed his insides littered with screws. "There were 17 strange objects found at the level of his stomach and colon," said Dr. Julio Acevedo, one of the surgeons who operated on Zarate. The black-and-white scans showed Zarate's skeleton interlaced with things like bolts, barbed-wire and pens.

"The objects had caused the stomach to expand," said Acevedo.

Doctors said Zarate was mentally ill but it was not clear why he ate the metal.

She doesn’t have a 10-gallon hat, but this Texas woman with the largest implants in the world has a gallon of silicone in her breasts.

Sheyla Hershey of Houston now has the largest breast implants in the world, measuring 38KKK, according to Fox News.

The blonde 28-year-old had nine (yes, nine) breast enhancement surgeries and when American doctors refused to do another on her when she was a 34FFF, she went to Brazil.

Brazil does not have a limit on how large implants can go.

Hershey dumped her boyfriend after he begged her not to get yet another surgery, but she told him she had to follow her dream.

Turned out to be a real, uh fake, bust.
