Santa Clawed by Big Cat at Pet Store
AP
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Dec. 10) - Santa Claus posed with a very large kitty on his lap — and now, unfortunately, he might need rabies shots.
Jonathan Bebbington was playing the jolly old elf during a Santa Paws photo event at a PetsMart store when he was bitten Sunday on the wrist and hand. The event was to raise money for Penny Angel's Beagle Rescue group.

The cat and owner disappeared after the incident. At least one person thought it was a bobcat, said Joan Kerr, president of Penny Angel's.
"It had absolutely huge paws, like 3 inches around," Kerr said.
The cat, named "Benny," appeared terrified because dogs were nearby, Bebbington, 47, told The Press of Atlantic City.
"It had very powerful jaws and big teeth," he said, estimating the cat weighed about 30 pounds.
The woman who brought it to the store told people there she bought the cat from a breeder in Wyoming for $1,500.
"Her last words were, 'I have a permit and the cat has all his vaccines,' " Bebbington said.
Unless the owner produces vaccination records, Bebbington will have to receive rabies shots starting Thursday as a precaution. He's already had a tetanus shot.
"I don't want anything to happen to the cat," he said. "It's a beautiful animal and was naturally scared."
Rabies shots are not as bad as they used to be, when they were a long ordeal of dreaded, painful shots in the abdomen. They now consist of a shorter series of shots in the arm.

Who in their right mind brings a bobcat to pose with Santa? This woman needs her head examined.

Police: pizza man's cheesy weapon foils a stickup
15 hours ago

MIRAMAR, Fla. (AP) — Police say a pizza delivery man fought back with the one weapon he had handy when a gun was pulled on him in a stickup: A large, hot pepperoni pizza.

Delivery man Eric Lopez Devictoria, 40, flung the steaming pie at the gunman, buying time as he ran for safety, police said.

At least one shot was fired as Devictoria fled, but the deliveryman wasn't hurt and was able to quickly call police, according to authorities.

Three teenage suspects were nabbed soon after Wednesday's run-in with the cheesy weapon, police said, adding they were charged with armed robbery.

Canadian soldiers add donkey brigade to Afghan mission

Last Updated: Friday, December 12, 2008 | 4:27 PM ET
The Canadian Press

Canadian Forces in Afghanistan will have another item added to their arsenal next summer — donkeys.

Soldiers plan on using a team of up to 30 specially trained donkeys to deliver critical supplies like water and ammunition.

Maj. Charles Janzen, the Canadian soldier spearheading the donkey brigade idea, says the animals can survive with very little water and can carry a significant amount of weight — nearly 160 kilograms.

Afghanistan's terrain is one of the major challenges facing Canadian and coalition troops. There are mountains, irrigation canals, grape fields, mud walls around compounds and wadis — a dry riverbed that contains water only after heavy rains.

Donkeys will also cut down on the use of tanks to breach walls to reach soldiers needing resupply, which has been a source of anger for many Afghan farmers.

A unit of Afghan soldiers, along with Canadian mentors, will be in charge of deploying the donkeys next year.

"Last summer we were up to 55 degrees Celsius," said Janzen, the self-proclaimed "ass-master" spearheading the donkey brigade idea.

"And when you think of the average soldier — whether he's Afghan or Canadian Forces — when you start putting on all your battle armour and you've got bullets and grenades plus small packs, you're carrying anywhere from 100 to 200 additional pounds of gear."

Many countries like the United States and Britain already use pack animals to support special operations in the mountains.

Canadian troops have used donkeys before, but not since northern Sicily in the Second World War.

Roughly 2,700 Canadian soldiers are serving in the southern Kandahar region of Afghanistan.
