Ships Boats

Commodore John Paul Jones

Commodore in the Continental Navy
Storm Modder
I had an idea.
What if you could click on an option at sea called "Launch Barge". When you do, the screen will go into loading and you will appear in command of the boat that is seen next to the docks when you moor. You can "row" up to the docks and choose "Moor" from the menu. Remember to strike all sail before doing this so your ship doesn't leave or run itself aground! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />
This makes going to new islands more interesting and it makes life at sea an adventure.

I got this idea when I sailed to Islla Meulle on Inzane's Surprise and came across a sloop being sunk by pirates. I blew the buggers out of the water and then proceeded to rescue the crew of the sloop. The battle had taken place next to the cliffs that extended out into deep water near the fort, as the innocent sloop was anchored there. There were several men that I could not rescue, for they were so close to the cliffs that I couls not sail to them and pick them up. If I did, I would grind my command into the cliffs!
If I had a boat that I could launch, I could have rescued them.

That would be an excellent idea, also it gives a bit more realism to the game without being Overboard ( No Pun intended......lol ).

Ha ha ha! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> It could make missions really fun. Like, anchor in this bay and row round the head to that inlet, land a party of marines and march inland... the invasion of Oxbay has begun... >:D

I'd like to have ships' boats. You wouldn't rescue survivers by sailing around in your man-o-war for example. You'd launch a boat. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Exactly! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I can just imagine it as a potential plot device for the P&E.. seems there it would be used for espionage or going to smaller islands and lagoons not reachable by ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> Say for example picture a boat sailing up to Saint Helena loaded with arsenic...

Aye, but it would improve the build in general, so I put it here! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I did make the mistake of adding below the line once... <img src="http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2843/punyboat8ag.png" border="0" alt="IPB Image" /> ....Heheh. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> But I suppose somebody may be able to make something like what you're thinking about. Kinda like what happens when you get hit by a waterspout, spin around, and then you launch a life boat..

This might be possible. But only if you have max 3 ships in your fleet, because the boat would be ship #4. Maybe we can add a button that sort-of does the same as generating a boat close to where you are, then switch the captain with you, so you get command of the boat. Might be doable.

It would be better done as AI most of the time. Historically, many boardings were done from a smaller boat rather than trying to get two ships alongside one another. Make it a cutscene-type sequence when you select "anchor", and then make it operate AI for boarding operations unless you specifically transfer yourself to it.

I think we had this discussion earlier, and several people said it was likely not feasable. They could be wrong, but search the earlier posts for their input.

The 4 ships only thing could present a problem. What if we did something like when you are in port. You can see your ship anchored there, along with the rest of your squadron. (If you have more than 1 ship.) However, it is not an active part of the game at the moment, it is merely an inactive prop in the background. Then we could have 4 fhips and your barge. We could take this a step farther ang give you the option of launching a boat from each ship, like for a landing party or "All captains go ashore".

That was called "cutting-out"
Maybe you could have a control, "send boat to rescue drowning sailors"

Aye, perhaps instead of having this whole launch boat interface, we could execute a hot key that's something like "Rescue Survivors", which picks up all men within 100 ft of your ship.

OOH! great idea, I always find it obnoxious (great word, eh!) to sail around and pick up all the bloody drowning people.

Don't bother adding to the interface. Just increase the distance at which survivors are picked up. This captures the spirit of the idea without adding unnecessary clutter. You still might have to sail around a bit, but it's better than the current method of sailing over the swimmers.

I think adding launches is a fantastic idea but this it should be just a functionality addition to a ship, like the cannon. Say have a few types: Gigs, Jollyboats, etc that can each hold so much wether people or cargo.

Each ship class could have a maximum number and size launch and these could be used to pick-up survivors, gather cargo in the water, make the "Landing Party" ability useful since it would be the major factor in attacking forts. Perhaps they could affect how quickly cargo in general can be loaded and unloaded.

You could buy and upgrade ship's boats at the shipyard by adding an option to the dialog. Anything that helps customize your ship is a welcome addition I think as the veriety of ships that's really the game's strong point to my thinking.

Also smuggling activities and treasure quests will be more flexible, meaning they add variety to the method of getting around. Like rowing into a cave for example. Also kinda unrealistic to have your boat run over people in the water, wihlst conducting rescue operations.

yes, a tartane inside a tartane is a bit odd. but i still don't understand why you simply couldn't use your tartane if you have one to get where you want. it would also solve the problem of having to sail with that new landing sloop that is normally lying in the port to get to difficult locations. it would be a problem because your ship would have changed shape. to clear up what i said, here's an example:

all ships use that new landing sloop to get to difficult places. with big ships, this would make sense, but with small ships, like the tartane, it would, as i said, not make sense to suddenly have that new landing sloop to get to difficult places, as it is just as big as the tartane. it wouldn't logically fit. i understand that you might think: why not use the tartane you got in the first place? it would save coding. if you use the tartane as a landing sloop, you can let all the ships use that ship to get to difficult places, without having the logistics problems if the player has a tartane. the player would think that that is the same ship as he had before.

the way this would work:

the player would be on his ship, and orders to deploy a landing sloop the same way as you would use an ability. it would have to be named differently, for it to make sense with tartanes and all ships somewhat related to that ship. there would be a darkening of the screen or a simple loading screen, and when the player can do something again, he would be in a tartane. with this, he can land in difficult places. the player's original ship would lie behind him, but only if it would be a non-tartane ship. to get back o the ship, he would have to do the same thing as in boarding.
