Ships Boats

Here's a suggestion. Create a couple of Tartane and name them Jolly Boat, Captain's Gig, Long Boat and Cutter. No weapons and limited crew. Update the 'Ship Birth' function to allow you to birth theses boat on your ship rather than an island. When you want to use them, re-launch the ship and swap ships. Simple.

I know there is a movement to make officers more functional in ship board activities. If you like the above idea, create a new officer (Coxson) and make it so you have to talk to him to get him to launch the ship boats. (or just give it to the first officer).

leave the cutter from that list. it's already a ship. although the excisting cutter COULD be used for this.

We were able to make a ship's boat for when you moor in harbor, and I've been able to set my ship as BOAT and go to sea with it. You can't sail anywhere, there's no propulsion. But, we could rig it with sail locators or something so that its identified as having sails, yet there are no textures, so it appears to be rowing.

always surprising how things are sometimes suddenly realised. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

It is the code that says wether the ship can move, and not the sail locators. The sail locators is just eyecandy.
(Sometimes I know something, but don`t have time, or I don`t want to answer <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />)

But I like the idea of different types of rescue boats.
Tartane to Schooner: dinghy (boat.gm)
Schooner to Pinnace: Tartane
Pinnace to Frigate: gunboat (Skelly Bob`s gunboat)
Battleship to Manowar: Lugger/Cutter with really weak guns.

ou could also buy this boat in the shipyard.

sounds good to me. i don't remember which game it was, but there you could go into your dinghy in the middle of a battle and drill holes in an enemy ship's hull. extremely dangerous of course, but very handy.

Wow! That's crazy! Ya know what would be really dangerous? (Not to mention impossible to put ingame.)
What if you had the <i>Turtle</i>? The first submarine made for war... can you imagine trying to pedal up to a man-o-war and not get run over, then try to drill holes in her belly? =P

While it would be good if you could make the boats look like they are being rowed, it's not necessary. Also, the larger ship boats (cutter and launch) often did carry sails!!!! So for the smaller ones, just eliminate the sails but keep the code for them to move (rowing into the wind was very difficult so small boats often didn't, they tacked like large ships did). For the larger boats no changes would really be necessary!

Also, boats didn't carry cannons, the bigger one's might have a bow grapeshot swivel gun or a 6lb carronaid.

Indeed. There have been several accounts of frigates laying beclaimed and frantically beating to quarters as ships' boats swarm out of inlets and coves loaded with marines and bow "smashers" (a slang term for carronade). Nasty stuff, I'd have to be the frigate's captain. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />

going into the dinghy to drill holes in a hull isn't that dangerous as it might seem. it's nearly impossible to get hit. besides, most of the AI aims too high to hit you anyway. (if you don't shoot manually at a small ship you will shoot over it yourself as well.) and having the factor of not having any sails, so you can't get slowed down, things seem to brighten up! the biggest danger would be getting run over. i've even been sunk when i tried to ram a lugger with a gunboat. getting there would be difficult, but actually being there could be deadly. getting back isn't that much of a point.

This could be a fun mod, but the usual question remains: Who's going to code it in? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Uh.. I haven't the <i>slightest</i> idea as to how you would code that in. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" />

I was guessing with "locators". <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> If that's what made you think. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ha ha! That was perfect! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

"No survivors, then where do the stories come from I wonder?"

mercilles mark indeed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> i always found it a bit odd that you have to run them over first.

As no one else has come forward, I'm willing to give this a shot. My C++ Kung-Fu is weak at the moment (Still learning the language) and I have yet to figure out where everything in the game programing is. But there are many many good hints and links scattered through theses forums so I'm learning fast.
