Pieter, Im pretty sure, that the CTD are really in connection with the shops, and shipyards ! I did stayed away from the white waller, (never change that malicious looking corvette of mine...) And the march 18 did worked for me really good, UNTIL I first went to shop, and/or shipyard. Tried this really much times. Im in Isla Muelle, stucked on that very island, hell.... If I try to leave, the c++ runtime error CTD kills me in the map screen.

ps: maybe you all still get the runtime error: I realized, that sometimes when the game locks up, the little window MAY appear IN TOP of the games screen layer, so you see it, and the runtuime error text, but sometimes its remain UNDER the games screen, so you dont see it, but when you press enter, or click, (push the OK button, you just dont see it) the game closes to desktop.

I am playing the March 25 update on the Post Build 12. Previously I tried the March 18 update and found it too bugy to play so I went back to the March 3 on Post Build 12 which is generally quite stable. To that I added stormy start on new isalnds and all worked fine. While I fing that the March 25 might be somewhat more stable than the March 18 versoon, there are still a lot more CTDS than we are used to.

I play two versions of the game on a desktop and a laptop with high end componnents and the updates perorm the same on both machines do I don't think these problems are computer related. The only thing I think I might be doing that might contribute to the significant number of CDTs is overwriting my saves which I have stopped doing.

My conclusion is that in the last month a lot of wonderful features have been added, and somthing somewhre has destabilized the game. While the problem occurs most often in stores or shipyards, I have had a few occur on the map at sea.

While I don't really understand programing or coding it seems that looking at the way the game is looking for things in transitions might be a good place to begin. I know Pieter has looked at ships and I don't know what else.

One new thing I have discovered on St.Martin's, visiting the ship yard no matter what you do there stips your cargo hold of evrything in it including food and rum which leads to mutiny and a dramatic reduction in crew. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

(at least I dont get CTD anymore, hehe. Actually, if someone make this an able fix, instead of rough file replace, it could be only Pieter)

If Pieter finds it totally safe n' fixed, and make it compatible with the full amount of update 25's new mods, instead of erasing some, you get it too. hehe.... Dont givin' away half-finished stuff
 
White waller frigate is also causing me problems, latest patch, i captured the WW and swapped ships, just a few seconds after i got a CTD in middle of a battle
 
Captain 'Dan the Lunatic Wolf' found that replacing initItems.c with an older version might do the trick. This will not cause any additional trouble, but nothing truly important was changed there recently. Also: Try using an old version of ships_init.c and see if the CTDs are still there. If the CTDs are solved then (after starting a new game), we'll know that it's one of these two files causing the trouble.

I am not at home now and I am having exams this week anyway, but once I have time, I will completely check initItems.c on differences with the previous version and I will completely redo all the ships_init.c entries. That should fix it.

White Waller Frigate has ship skin "WhiteWallerFrig.tga.tx" it is 2.7 m or 2700 kbit size <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />
Normal Pinnace1 has ship skin "bortoutpinnace1.tga.tx" it is 340k size. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
As you can see White waller has about 8 times larger size. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
To test if it has anything to do with ctd's: go to "Pirates of the Caribbean/resource/Textures/Ships"
rename WhiteWallerFrig.tga.tx -> XWhiteWallerFrig.tga.tx
make copy of bortoutpinnace1.tga.tx
then rename copy of bortoutpinnace1.tga.tx -> WhiteWallerFrig.tga.tx
now you can test WhiteWallerFrigate with 340k ship skin and see if it has anything to do with ctd's. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Ok something is really awry, i cant seem to use the shipyard at all, dont know if its because im using danielle or not. but every time ive been to a shipyard now i cant leave the island without getting a c++ runtime error

Everybody testing, please download <a href="http://pieter.piratesahoy.org/downloads/extreme_measures.zip" target="_blank">this</a> attempted bugfixing file, install and start a new game. You do need the 25 March release for this to work.

What was changed in this version:
- All new ship models are removed from ships_init.c
- initItems.c has been largely reset to what it used to be
- itemsbox.c was fixed
- Code was added to bladedamage mod to help figure out why you'd lose control of the main character

Please try this attempted bugfix and tell if you still have any of the CTDs. Please note: The ships are not going to be removed forever. This is just for testing purposes.

When you lose control over the main character, please post the last message that was displayed on the screen. It should be something like "Attack disarmed while blocking - Attack runs away". This message will point to the code that was executed just prior to the bug occurring. Please also mentioned what was happening at the time. Please tell if you are the other character was blocking and/or who was attacking who at the exact time of the bug.
 
Merciless Mark: did you bought or selled any personal items? Try to use an ooold march 5 or later update savegame, and try that way.
Because 'CTD' can hide in a savegame. No yoke. So if you did something 'bad' before the save, after that you cant get rid of it.
Try a proven safe, old savegame, and DO NOT open any street merchant or shop items-selling dialog! YOu will find, that ou can sail away, until you sell, or buy some items.

I replaced my inititems.c and initutilite.c files, and the ctd-'s gone.
You just need a provenly safe save, a controls reset to default, a pressing of the i key, then evade item selling, OR get those files replaced by Pieters fix. After you pressed the I key, you can set your controls back to your original.
 
Peiter, I installed the bux fix and the game would <b>not load</b>.

Pieter, I went back and reinstalled the 3/25 version and the game loaded. Loaded a save went to ship yard. Repaired ship, sold a capture and everything slowed way down. Got this error log.

well, i'm no modder, but i can tell that a great deal of problems are coming from ships/ ships.c
also, it looks like the characters\characterUtilite.c is causing quite a big mess in the first one.

Thanks a lot for the errorlogs, Jason.

I tried to find out what's wrong with the bladedamage mod (That are all those error that occur in Lai_events), but I must admit it's a mystery to me. Almost all those errors occur because the program can't find attributes attached to the reference characters "enemy." or "attack." But the code looks correct to me, all those happens in sections that used to work in previous versions, all those attributes should be there. Seems like the program suffers from amnesia. (Any Professional programer here? Is it possible that there is a limit to the amount of attributes that the program can store?)
That might also explain why you loose control of the character: he is being set to LAi_SetCitizenTypeNoGroup(attack); which turns him into a fleeing NPC. Despite the check whether he is the player:

if(sti(attack.index) != GetMainCharacterIndex()

Maybe the program can't find attack.index anymore and therefore doesn't realize that the owner of the broken blade is the Main character.

Sorry that I can provide no solution but only vague speculation. A very laborintensive way to fix it would be to insert tracecommands after every attributecall to see if the program still remembers that attribute, like this:


weaponID = enemy.equip.blade ; // defines weaponname
Trace("line 550 looks for enemy.equip.blade and gets: "+ enemy.equip.blade);

If the system.log later displays "line 550 looks for enemy.equip.blade and gets: error" you know at least that something is wrong there. but it will be a LOT of work.

That's FAIK no code whatsoever. Pieter, can you remember what that line was supposed to do? Maybe somthing not completely deleted there? And maybe we are lucky and this caused the mess up in the following code.

Otherwise I'd suggest to go back to a version of LAi_events that worked, add the bladedamage code in little (working ) portions, do some THOROUGH testing, and only if there is absolutely no errormessage anymore the next little portion should be added.
