Pirates of the Caribbean: Community Prequel Script

About the ship speeds guys, we need to analyze the POTC movies to gauge the speed of the pearl based on the height of the breaking water at the bow, and by just looking at the speed. She is FAST so i would assume a 14-23 knot area of average speed at full canvas.

I still think Edwards should be same age or older than Jack.

Who is "that lad" and who is "him" in that line?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Mercer. Jack was speaking to Edwards and Mercer quietly came up and joined them and Jack didn't notice. When Mercer spoke he thought it was Edwards but it sounded like Mercer (because it really was Mercer) so Jack said that line.

<!--quoteo(post=225328:date=Dec 10 2007, 08:42 PM:name=Mercer)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Mercer @ Dec 10 2007, 08:42 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I still think Edwards should be same age or older than Jack.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I think he should be the same age.

I still picture Edwards older than Jack. Remember that Jack is a lot younger in this film (than in the last three).

So for Edward's age, I think we can safely agree: Somewhat older than Jack, but not much. About 30 like the Commodore suggests sounds about right to me. He should not be Will Turner the second. However, he must also not end up being Norrington the second.

As for the Pearl's speed: 14-23 knots maximum speed is quite a range still. Does anyone know the average speed of various types of old-type sailing vessels? The Black Pearl can't be ridiculously fast, can she? Also for the voyage length calculations we should use average speed and not maximum speed. That makes quite a difference. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Thanks for explaining that, Old Salt! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Any thoughts on that Batavia battle thing? What do you think of that Wikipedia history article?

I agree with the age. It's good.
I have no idea about ships speeds.
srry

Tomorow I will post the morning scene of Jack giving navigation.
So after the Land Ho! we need to do script editing.
I was reading script for PotC 1 i 2 and there is a lot of describing there and our script is mostly dialouge. We defenitly need to edit it.
We need to write everything that we see in our heads for certain situation. Every single detail...if we want our script to be good a one.

10 knots is my guess, for a fast ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

10 knots average speed? Not maximum speed, I presume? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

no, maximum. modern yachts rarely exceed the speed, but those are relatively slow ones. clippers could occasionally do 18, i think. what age are we talking about here? that would help.

Yesterday I saw that the big galleons could do about 8 knots, which was fast for ships that size. 10 knots would be very fast for a ship based on a galleon, like the Black Pearl. However, there is many smaller ship types that can go much faster and are much more manouvrable. So for the Black Pearl to be the fastest ship in the entire Caribbean, she must be truly insanely fast. I can realistically believe her to be the fastest ship of her type, but fastest ship in the Caribbean, regardless of type, seems a bit weird to me. Can't be true except for some sort of supernatural cause. That begs the question: Was the Wicked Wench also that fast or did Davy Jones make the Black Pearl much faster when he raised her from her watery grave?

i vote for the pearl being made slow. one thing that comes to mind though is that the curse seems to have lingered about the ship even after it was lifted. not just the aztec curse, but it's supposed 'lifetime' of 13 years until davy would sink it.

You mean the Wench being made slow? But the ship still needs to mean a lot to Jack. Why is it that Jack likes his ship so much anyway? Why would he never settle for any other ship? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

cos it's his ship. it's as simple as that. you can get to like a ship very much over time.

True. VERY true. And trust me: I would know. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
But I had always been wondering if there was some additional reason for Jack's attachment to his ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I thought that it had been established that the only reason why beckett was keeping the <i>Wench</i> and Jack was because her speed was valuable to him, which made his always being late annoying... because they all knew he could get there ahead of time easily.

Yes, because that would have to be the case. Captains? He has plenty of those. Ships? He also has plenty of those so that makes perfect sense. Good one Commodore! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Yes, and remember, only Jack could coax the speed out of her sails. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

ooh, hint to something else? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

INT. WICKED WENCH, JACKS OFFICE - MORNING

Jack is sitting in is office and working with the maps.
He's drinking rum while doing it. He's not very good at it
so he throws the pencile behind him.

Jack:
Bugger.

Jack stands up and starts walking towards door.
Opens the door steps out side.

EXT. WICKED WENCH, DECK - MORNING

Sun is going into Jacks eyes so he puts his hand up.
Jack starts looking and he sees Edwards. Jack smiles.
He starts walking to Edwards. Edwards is talking to a
sailor. Jack approaches.

Jack:
Good morning Mr.Edwards.

Edwards:
Good morning captain.

Jack:
I was thinking....aaaa.... You will probably be bored with this long journey so I...aaa.... was thinking to give you the...aaa....navigaton of this ship. Just to keep you occupied. (smiles)

Edwards:
(smiles) I would be more than happy to accept.

Jack:
Oh, good than. You will find charts and all you need in my office.

Jack turnes around and makes a funny face. He's obviously
happy he won't be doing it.

.............................................

BTW. sorry if my english is bad...or my english frazes

LOL! Nice one, Gunsmith! I like Jack saying "Bugger" again. It always sounds <i>sooo</i> funny when he says that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Some things I wonder about:
- Doesn't this make Jack appear to incompetent? Any captain must be at least adequate in navigation. It is one of a ship's officers' main skills.
- I also think that Edwards should tell Jack that he doesn't intend to take over from him, whetever Mercer or Beckett might've led him to believe. After all: Edwards was introduced as if he was going to replace Jack on the smallest sign of ineptitude.
- Does anyone know where the actual navigation was performed on an old style sailing ship? On modern ship it is done either on the bridge or in the deck office. But old ships had neither. Was it always done in the captain's cabin? Would the captain let anyone else in their cabin, especially without themselves being present? Or aren't captains in their office/cabin most of the time during the voyage, doing their own administrative (and navigational?) work, only coming on deck for the important things?

Officially Edwards is of a higher rank than Jack is, though Edwards serves under Jack on this voyage. What would Edwards be thinking of serving under someone of a lower rank? And what would Jack be thinking of serving over someone who is officialy higher than him and could replace him at any given time? I imagine they would be quite uneasy with each other at first, until they get to know, respect and trust each other. It will then get even more interesting when Jack turns to piracy and betrays that trust. What do they both think of each other after that? I think we should try to walk through the entire story from the viewpoints of all the main characters to make sure that all the character interaction makes sense and there is actually interesting development there.

That would make sense as the reason why Beckett kept Jack employed. But obviously the Pearl was just as fast under captain Barbossa. And Will wanted to have the Pearl to be able to save his father because the Pearl is the fastest ship in the Caribbean and is thus the only ship that would be a match for the Flying Dutchman. However, if only Jack can coax the speed out of her sails, the ship would do Will no good. Any thoughts on that one? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

At least we can understand you, which is the main point of communication. When rewriting the script, we can rid ourselves of the spelling errors in there.
