I have a set of KEYS that you can buy from the Sneaky Trader - which can be used in a `side-quest`, of course! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

My description for the traders menu: <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->These keys might help you escape from jail, or they might be the keys to the town treasury... Or they might just open the privy behind the barn.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Similiar to keys, a shovel item would be indespensible. Could use it to dig up treasure, naturally, but I'm also putting an apothecary ("Steven `Mather-Wren`") in Greenford, and he wouldn't mind if you went to some graveyard and dug him up a fresh cadaver to study... He'll also sell you a jar of leeches as a `cure-poison` item. That's the main reason I wanted to add him... heh, leeches.

It also gave me an idea, something I'd like to see but wouldn't know how to begin adding, for random crew emergencies... they can fight if they're feeling rowdy, but they should also come down with scurvy or something if there is, say, not enough fruit. Or suppose you go to the QC brothel and get them all some company, to raise their morale... but every once and a while they'll all come down with a mysterious illness... So to cure it, and keep your crew from dropping like flies, you'd have to buy fruit, or go see my apothecary and ask him to apply physic to them all, for a modest price.

As well: I'm bothered by having to go back to port every time I've captured three ships... especially if I stumble on a nice juicy fleet on my way back. Maybe NK or CCC knows how to modify NK's shipberthing function to allow you to send a prize ship back to some friendly port. It'd free up a space, with the `trade-off` of you having to send an officer with it and losing that ship's help in battles... and perhaps, according to chance and skill, it could be `re-captured` along the way.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> Leeches, Alan, you really ARE twisted! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> But that is a good idea for a poison cure! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

And the scurvy and diseases idea has been discussed here before. Go for it!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I like the idea of sending off a prize ship (like from Master and Commander) - I wonder how you might manage those - I mean, I'd board and take a prize, then take necessary wheat & rum & ammo *& CREW* off, then send it to port - over and over again as long as I had officers to man them. I can see having more than four sitting there waiting for me, and sailing in with three more... Hmmm... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> Have to build a new shipyard interface, which might not be a bad idea... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

Great ideas <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
For the "mysterious illness" I can recommend mercury. Works wonders! err.. so I have been told by naval surgeons...

Sorry, I know nothing about the sipberthing stuff. All i might be able to come up with is a routine that deletes one of your ships together with the prize crew, and gives you the prizemoney in return. but that would still leave the problem of making an interface for that.

The way to do it, it seems to me, is either to make it an F2 interface option or a "give command" option while in sea mode... I just dunno where to start looking.

MAYBE it could be a special ability like Landing Party! That might be easier to interface! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-alan_smithee`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(alan_smithee)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->... but every once and a while they'll all come down with a mysterious illness... So to cure it, and keep your crew from dropping like flies, you'd have to buy fruit, .[/quote]

Oh darn ... I always dump the fruit <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Perhaps fruit should be added as a necessity just like wheat and rum with a specific amount required for a given crew size.

It would be activated if "Wheat and rum checking" is on.

As for sending prize ships into port, one possibility would be to do this via the officer dialog and the shipyard inteface:
You would go to your cabin and tell one of your officers: "I want you to take a prize into port" That would open the shipyard interface, like in the shipwrightdialogs. If you "sell" one of your ships then you would get a reduced price as "prizemoney" and the officer and some "prizecrew" would be deleted.
I don't know much about interfaces, but I assume the shipyard prices and the ships that are being offered to you are being defined in some townspecific file. To that one would have to add a section for the "tutorial_cabin" location with reduced "prizemoney" prices and NO ships for sale.

Though it would of course look a lot like having a shipyard in your cabin <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

What could we do about random worldmap encounters? I don't see what calls up the storms... I would like to encounter shipwrecks, to either help the survivors or plunder the wreck (a la Oregon Trail: "You find a wagon on the trail. Look inside? You find 3 boxes of bullets and a really itchy pair of long underwear); doldrums, which don't damage you but make time pass and you use up food and get bored and cranky; and sooner or later I'm going to make a "flotilla" location, like a big mass of ships lashed together functioning as an independant trading post/point of operation for various dirty dealings. I could just stick it offshore somewhere but to randomly encounter them might be more fun.

And abilities... how might one, say, create the ability to dispatch a little boat to transfer with an alied ship that isn't near enough, or to automatically gather goods from a sunk ship without you having to steer over it?

...again on the subject of interfaces, it bothers me that I can't dump cargo in ransack mode... I hafta let so much good cargo go because I'm full and so's my captured ship, so i can't get rid of any bombs or something into it.

When I originally suggested that we should have a function to dump cargo, I MEANT it to be in the RANSACK mode... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> It just never got there! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

It should, I think. The ship is heavier, thus deeper in the water.

About the prizes, that would be great. I always have to go into port after attacking some larger fleet or raiding the shiptraffic around an island to sell all the ships and goods. However, it would be better to make the "send back as prize" function were available only if no enemy is near. Half the fun, to me at least, is picking the fat traders and avoiding the warships escorting them.

1) I'm starting with the tattoos, since I dunno how to work the medals in yet. I have a dozen, but most will only be available through serving Jurcksen, whenever I can figure out how to make him diplicate the letter of marque/sink ship quest dealie. But what I have for now is, is an opium den on Redmond, and there's a swarthy fellow there who'll offer to tattoo you, even though he's a bit high and can't even tell if you're a man or a lady, and his tools are dirty. So you can purchase a `skill-enhancing` tattoo for a fair price, but it also takes 2 or 3 HP points away, since it's such a harmful affair; and you've the chance of being infected.

Here's a dialog sample and the tatts. The den is part of a larger mod but I may make it a standalone for the sake of getting these out to everyone, coz I think they're fun.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/tatt2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

2) If all goes well `computer-wise`, I should have "A_S Captains Courageous" on the FTP shortly. It's a collection of six new models/skins/portraits, along with text to integrate them into the tailors mod. I've been posting pictures of most of them here or there... three ladies and three dudes. And at least one will be a surprise, `brand-spanking`-new to everyone.

To install, just download it, put the models, textures, and head animations where they belong... and past text from the readme into three seperate files.

Cheers.

If you want 'em on your ass, I guess that's up to you...

Anyway, I tried to find period tattoos, but it was tough. Less than half of what I found was `pre-20th` century. Anyone else have any good sources for old tattoos?

I'd also love it if one of these goodies, the medals and tattoos, could affect your rep in such a way that even if you fall below a certain level, people will still do business with you. Might there be a way to do that, to hardwire it into the item itself? Or should I write an inventory check for, say, a medal of a certain level into all the store and shipyard dialogs, so they'd know you're a respectable member of society even if you're a bloody horror?

Inversely... Maybe some tattoos could cap your rep and prevent you from going above a certain level, and could only be removed (I've tested and you can neither sell a tattoo or transfer it to an officer once you have it -- they're not `water-soluables`), painfully, by going to some specialist. Acid wash and cheese graters, I picture.
