Solved Fixing the Build Mod Ships

seems to me like the mizzen takes up too little space altogether. with so much weight astern compared to the amount of canvas there, the mizzen could use a topgallant above the topsail.

So in other words, it needs a taller mizzen mast, with the same locators and an extra sail. Could you manage that Hylie?
An extra stay sail in front of the spanker would probably be square, too.

This ship has very thick masts and spars, so finding a match might be a problem. If there is a good one transplanting it is no problem.

Very few ships have a top gallant on the mizzen. The Man O War, Constitution, and a brig are about the only ones that come to mind. It might be better to just make the mizzen larger by moving its spars farther apart.

that's fine, really. it's about proper pressure distribution over the length of the hull. without enough pressure on the stern, the bow will veer away from the wind. while that isn't that much of a problem, the ship would be a bit of a pain to steer in real life.

Ok, I'll just make the mizzen larger. That screenie is deceptive in that the spanker is larger than it looks. It hangs out over the stern when pointed straight back.

A square stay eh?

I found these sails on another ship and transplanted them. Is this too much sail? There are plenty of tangled ropes to clean up, so it's not done yet.

Oh yeah, that sail. Unless I'm mistaken, there shouldn't be a sail right next to the spanker, unless it is snow-rigged (like the snow brig with a double-mast). :?

LOL! Timing is everything. I just deleted those screenies to make room for this one showing the square stay sail.

Here I was thinking I was about done with this ship. Those sails were lifted from another ship and positioned just like that one. There are quite a few ships that use these masts I have found, and many of them use this arrangement.

For this ship I will delete the lower sail and make the top sail taller. I'm thinking about making the ships that use these masts like a variation on a theme. Some will be like this one, while some will have lateens, and some will not have stays. Whatcha think?

:cheers

Well that was lucky then! xD:

Now I'm thinking the square stay should be above the triangle rather than below it... that's my fault for putting a triangle there in the first place. :facepalm
As for the lateen/spanker variation, I'm all for that, as long as it suits the ship. Or more specifically, suits the time periods the ship appears in.
For instance, that ship plus FR_SuperiorWarship2 should definitely have stays and a spanker, but FR_SuperiorWarship1 should keep its lateen, but maybe have stays as well.

Yes, I was thinking about time periods for different sail combinations.

Yes a square sail would be better up top. Currently the triangular one looks like a hanky and the ropes are at bad angles.

I deleted the lower sail, but now that spar doesn't rotate with the wind. :facepalm Back to ye olde drawing boarde..........

Oh yeah, that's thanks to a lack of sail locators. Yards won't move unless they have sail locators, or they're modelled with a yard which does have them. :modding
To fix it, either use a pair of yards modelled together like before, or put the locator for the lower yard ON the yard which moves above it.
Or just put sail locators on it to form a mini sail inside the yard, but it's up to you.

I'm learning to dislike stays. What a pain. I don't know what to do with that upper stay. No matter what I try it looks dorky. :j1 Will continue tomorrow.

I'd say bring the whole thing down a bit, and shorten it to reduce the tall, thin look. That's just my gut instinct, anyway. :shrug

This is my last version of that stay for now. I've spent too much time on it and am moving on to the next ship.

Ok, both the RN_Warship and FR_SuperiorWarship2 are done and are in my folder on the FTP. They are the same but different.

I have no ideer why that one trisail is distorted since it was copied over from the RN ship, where it is well formed.

I also discovered why the spanker would not convert at first. It did not have enough ropes! I added ropes to it and it now works fine.

Would it not be better to use the spanker and deck texture from the RN ship, so we don't have a spanker and flagpole on the French one?

Yes, but the combination of the two isn't accurate. Either the flag is on the spanker, or there's a lateen (or spanker with only the upper yard, whatever they're called) with a flagpole.

Have you used the HEX editor before? I lose track of who I've explained it to. :facepalm

Umm, I've been fixing spankers, so yes I know how to use a hex editor. :wp

Do you want me to change "deck-tga" to deca-tga?

edit: Nevermind. That was it. It will get the big spanker now.

PS: I never could get your fixes with the moved locator and the mini sail to work.

Maybe this time it is done. It is on the FTP. Note that I had to modify the shipsinit.c in order for the flags to work properly. The modifications are included in the zip file.
