Mod Release Build 14 Beta 3 Progress

even if you discover a blueprint it still would need to be installed so you would still need to pay.
I think ships could be a bit more expensive. As your own ship would also be worth more you can also sell it for more so that balances that.
Then you can let the upgrades be a percentage of the ship cost.
Does anyone know if updating a ship also increases its value, so if you sell it you get more back also?

Making the ships themselves more expensive is a good idea, with the prices going up geometrically with size. That would keep the small ships affordable while the largest ones would only be for the very richest.

Also, tying a ship or an upgrade to a national rank only works for those who choose to play as a naval officer. A successful merchant has much more money than a mere captain.

This is true, and i agree with both comments. I'd say go for price increase by Ship size and class. Makes perfect sense

Arghs ... I may have asked this before, but I seem to forget such thing:
What exactly is required to get my characters powder and ammunition reloaded when on board my ship?

I believe it was "having a gunner", but that doesn't seem to be sufficiant.

That is all it takes. Assign one of the officer that you always leave on the ship as your gunner. Methinks that if your gunner is part of your shore party then he will not restock you.

Arr ... that might work. Actually, my gunner was with me at shore. Will try. Tanks Hylie!

Edit: Aye, that was it.:onya

upgrade costs seems to be tied to ships cost, but not like being a fracture of it, but a multiple.

As it is now, the ship cost is a fraction of the cost of the upgrade. Because I sell regularly a 4th rate 66 guns for 180 000 second hand. And top sails, bronze cannons etc are each around 300 000, the cheaper being exactly equal to the cost of the ship... But who cares, there is the console for ..

If I recall, the upgrade costs are based on the HP values. I think it is calculated in KB_routines.c .

As I tried to start a new game I notice it needs more realism. Try Nathaniel Hawk as swashbuckler. You die even from the blowing of the wind. In Tales of a Chevalier, I don't know how one passes the beginning at the beach. You fire the pistol and untill you make the first strike with the sabre you are already dead. Plus, from the beginning, all AI characters can make moves a lot faster than you. 3 times faster actually. I don't see how you can progress in this game without cheating. Plus you start with 1000 gold, for which you cannot buy even a purse. Allthough should be in fact copper coins since they don't buy anything. And from the mid of the game, after acquiring a pirate bibliotheque, you become a superhuman who slaughters everyone around. While in reality whatever you buy shouldn't add to you a finger. Don't know but it's not realistic. Maybe one has to make points with winning and to loose them with loosing ... ?! That's how the game would be more balanced. Starting with a mid-level.

Swashbuckler is intended for the few players that want a serious challenge and is not really fun to me, but I play it to stress the game and find problems. :nerbz What it teaches is that life is not fair and one needs to use the most important muscle in your body, the brain.

I think the game play is pretty well balanced now. I am playing the standard storyline and am at level 28. I still get killed every now and then too. Lose officers.........Those treasure quests are hard! :treasure:

The Tales of a Chevalier start is a perfect example of life not being fair. If you let him talk you are dead. So you shoot him before he gets a chance to talk. End of problem! :flower

Ahoy! I now the build operating on both my computers. I am an arcade player and I think I have a setting wrong because I am getting no information on spyglass. Any ideas about what I forgot this time?

:monkeydance:thumbs1

Have you looked in POTC--->PROGRAM--->internalsettings.h? The first section, realism options, can turn that on and off but it should be on in arcade mode. You should be getting some information even with the cheap spyglass. The better your spyglass the more information is shown. I get lots of information in realistic mode. In fact that should only be turned off in Iron Man mode.

EDIT: If you don't mind could you relate how you got POTC working on your Win 8 machine? Others are having problems too.

Did you possibly select "iron man" in realism settings?
Because that would completely disable any additional spyglass information except the enemy ships name at *very* short range.

Hi all I have just done a completely fresh install and im getting this error

COMPILE ERROR - file: sea_ai\sea.c; line: 146
function LanguageCloseFile(args:0) doesnt accept 1 arguments

Any ideas why?

Thanks in advance :)

We need more information. That is a stock game file that is giving the error.

Where did you install POTC? Did you download both part 1 and part 2 of Beta 3? What version of windows are you using?

I noticed by talking to the crew on deck I can take 8 men ashore plus the officers. Taht has to be enough for to kill these on the treasure spot.

You sure with the small pistol I can achieve that effect ?! :doff

Nathaniel Hawk has had all fighting abbilities, defence, gunman whatnot, and still dies as a fly - that is - cannot stand even ONE enemy soldier in abordage - dies from one hit - in swashbuckler. Plus I bought a few books though not much. Even if it may be balanced in other difficulty, for swashbuckler, it isn't balanced.
And in another storyline it takes me 4 pistol shots untill someone dies, or 2 musket ones, and a hit-two with the sabre. I can't imagine in the Chevalier line one can do the same with a small pistol at once. At any difficulty. And at swashbuckler should be impossible. This difficulty has to start with the player more developed, otherwise noone plays it, that's for sure.

When you go into the caverns all of those crewmen don't do any good at all as only one or two can fight at a time. Plus there is one treasure quest where you get to go down into the tunnels all by your self. Of course you get into fights where you are outnumbered by up to 4 to 1 down there.

Ayup! I shoot him as he comes running up and then it takes 3-4 strokes of that rapier to finish him. :diomed

Actually I'm playing on swashbuckler too, and I'm not yet sure if I am enjoying it.

But so far, I just consider it very *realistic*. Reaslistic here means regardless how well you are trained or equipped or prepared, you'll never can count on being superior. Any fight can be deadly, and a single cutthroat with a rusty knife my slit you with one hit. If it's too hard ... well that's what the other 3 are for.

Personally, I'm trying swashbuckler because I hope I'll find more challenging naval battles there. On all other levels, those became too easy over time. Arr ... Hylie, since you play on that level, can you confirm naval battles being more challenging like on lower levels?

Nope. Naval battles do not get harder. All you have to do is stay afloat and sooner or later they will either sail away or surrender. There is no reason to get a big ship unless you know you will need it for a special battle, like taking a fort or Cozumel.

I went into internal settings and set the spy glass info to one. I have the thing set on arcade not iron man.

My machine is windows 7. The only things that were different this time are: I used the most recent version of the installer and the 10/8 version of the file, I performed a clean install using the original game from disc, and I found and deleted several other copies of the game lurking around.

:shrug
