B14 troubles

Again, I've never seen this problem - I've had companion ships sunk and the game did not crash. Also:

Pressing Tab does lock the map. On the left, the worldmap as it is by default - zoomed in, the map moves to keep your ship pointing ahead. On the right, the same worldmap after I press Tab - zoomed way out, the map stays static and your ship turns.

Ahhh,,,by default... so where is the switch to make the map fixed and the ship spin around? Game lacks an instruction set... shame?

Ahhh,,,by default... so where is the switch to make the map fixed and the ship spin around? Game lacks an instruction set... shame?
Well... all I can say is that my tab when pressed does not fix the map like it's done in all past versions... what is it about this version that won't sync with my Lenovo T61?

Also... what is it that in v21 and now sinking an escort after the main battle (in v22 just sinking any ship makes a freeze, makes it crash on my Lenovo with Win7Pro same op system as yours? Makes no sense. Is there a setting in Initial settings I need to be aware of?

Do you change any of the Internal Settings after downloading and installing? I'm Playing out-of-the-box and getting much different performance.

Hmmm... that would mean the default is functional while my Tab key command is not being recognized to switch the map from default.

There is something very wrong with your installation. It does not behave the same way as a normal installation of Build 14.

I have made some changes to "InternalSettings.h", but none which would account for the odd behaviour of your installation. I disabled locked perks and skill bonuses from gems, and I enabled sidestepping. Nothing to do with worldmap or ship sinkings.

How exactly did you install Build 14?

In over a week I downloaded at least 12 times using the link from the PA! webpage with the same result. Since MS Windows security blocks any .exe file from an un-certified site it would not allow that file to be executed until I went through a several step process of vouching for the website as trust worthy, and opened the file. I downloaded the .tar and the installer. Reader the instructions, got out my Akella/Bethesda 2 CD original 2003 and tried to open it in my CD drive but my MS Win7Pro updated OS refused saying the disk was "incompatible"! My option was to go in previous installs, copy the Akella file that had enabled downloading/installation and placed it into the target file alone. When I started the installer it asked for the file to install into. When I selected the folder with the Akella folder in it the installer could not find the original game and shutdown. I then copied the files from the folder into the target game folder. When I directed installer to this it identified the game and did the installation. When I installed I went through the setup ritual and settings as I had previously. What resulted would not perform as all prior games and showed bizarre situations that were not consistent with previous play. The direct sail to Antigua worked but my direct sail to the cove outside failed. While my ship on the map showed inside the ring across the land barrier, when I changed to sailing map my ship was outside the ring at the cove where it should be, but it would not Direct Sail since it was locked inside the ring. TAB no longer responded in direct sailing map.

I downloaded several more times to see if it was a transmission error but got the same results. Where did you get the download you are using? Have you tried downloading from the web page link and installing to verify the code is not corrupted? If you have a different download link please let me know so I can use it since it seems to be valid and working.

I've just tried replacing the Program module with the recent 2019 release Program but it is incompatible with the current version architecture and does not function past the Start episode.

My best guess is that the linked version has been corrupted or is being corrupted by the download. Your trying it will indicate which. If you have
time and curiosity to troubleshoot this problem give it a try and let me know the result. My multiple downloads have all resulted in the same unplayable result. My internal resetting of controls gave no result. I even went back to settings and did a restore original settings with no change. Anything else I can try?

Thanks Mate!

Do you change any of the Internal Settings after downloading and installing? I'm Playing out-of-the-box and getting much different performance.

Yes, I made changes to remove features I don't need/use and those that I found overboard in action. Went back and reset to original with no change in result.

Any chance your Out-of-the-Box link is available? Was it the same link as on the webpage?

One issue I found when moving the v19 Program into the stalled game is that all saves were marked "incompatible"... Must have been a very substantial change to not recognize the Akella folder in the target game folder by the installer and the fact the saved games are incompatible with the previously working Program Folder function.

I have the original Akella/Bethesda 2 CD version of the stock game. That runs for me under Windows 7. I've installed it and keep a copy of this original game. When I want to reinstall Build 14, I start by copying the stock game folder into a new folder, then install Build 14 onto that.

I downloaded the Build 14 Installation Wizard and Contents Archive from the links in the first post of this thread a couple of years ago. They have not changed since. I'm responsible for the Post 1st January 2022 Update, so I don't download it except to check that it matches what I upload.

If you copy an obsolete version of the Build Mod over your existing install, it will indeed not recognise saved games. This is because things have changed during the development of the Build Mod which prevent earlier saves from working. It's possible to edit "PROGRAM\globals.c" to change the version number so that it will recognise your saved game, and then you'll have even more problems than you have now. One particularly nasty bug that can happen if you do this is that the game may appear to work, but it will crash next time you try to save.

Much different than my experience trying to run my original Akella 2CD game. I get the MS message that the program is "Incompatible" Have you blocked the MS security upgrades that were "pushed" onto my computer through Edge? How long ago did you run your download from the CDs? Have you tried recently? These issues have appeared only recently (past month or two), never seen these before. I also get a block on downloading exe files from sites with no security certificate, such as Pirates, which can only be overridden by going through a series of steps saying I trust this site and accept responsibility... even then one download was in a CRDOWNLOAD format that is not an executable format and MS does not inform how to recover the exe form for use. MS EDGE has adopted Chrome as the format for their browser and it's problematic. I've had to use Opera to download .exe files without the problems described with Edge. If you are using Firefox you are not experiencing the issues of MS Edge/Chrome. The use of a working Program from an earlier version, assuming the Program file was not grossly modified in the revision to v22, was an experiment to try to regain a working game. This trial proved that the Program has been altered and is not compatible with the current Program. Obviously, the version has been modified so it's not "back" compatible with all previous versions. I'm puzzled why your download was not a problem with the same Win7Pro OS I'm using. timing might be the issue. Did you try the experiment of doing a new download from the link in the webpage I used to rule out corruption of the source file? If the problem is caused by MS alterations by security changes, then it's probably browser effects. You use Firefox... my next trial will be to download, install and use Firefox duplicating your install. Perhaps I will even be able to read the Akella CDs? Has anyone else running MS Edge browser made similar complaints? I see no user complaints posted in any forum. Are you aware of anyone else using this v22 download not being able to get a working game? Maybe others are having the same problems but not trying to resolve the issues? BTW the diagnostic use of "O" in the settings listing has never worked for me. Is it actually usable and active or is it a dead-end remnant that has not been culled? In all past versions the presence of the original game folder in the target installation folder has resulted in a working still "buggy" game. Why does that not work in this v22 install? That bothers me that the installation has changed so much. All the files in that folder were installed in the target game folder which the installer accepted. None of those files should create these issues, same files as before, so why the dramatic change in the resulting unplayable game? Is my situation unique? No other complaints? I need information to diagnose the source of this issue. Is the installation not compatible with Edge? If so then an advisory needs to accompany this revision. My QC/QA training and instincts drive me to solve this inconsistency with all previous installation results... What has changed that prevents a good install? Compelling question for me! I appreciate all the assistance I can get to get an answer. I believe this should not be happening and am driven to learn why. Makes sense?

I recently also tried to download the English version to check if it works. Downloaded from here:
As a result, it wrote to me that the version is not compatible, but I have Windows 10 and a Russian system.
Now I'm using the Russian version for New Horizons and there seem to be no problems.
If necessary, I can attach a torrent file or completely upload my game files through an exchanger.

Gave up on real mode went back to arcade with this result... any comments?

Following your endorsement of Firefox (used it years ago then Opera and EDGE when it came out) I've coupled it with DuckDuckGo and find it's faster to bootup, doesn't block .exe files and not as neurotic as Edge when visiting uncertified site such as PA! and downloading from such sites. With the add-on DDG I'm now using that... thanks for the tip!)

Antigua Coordinates problem.jpg Antigua port start.jpg Sailing position in Muscatto cove error.jpg
An error of coordinate positioning creates an issue making the game unplayable due to a ship at St. John's leaving using direct sail mode appears inside the ring at the NW corner but on the sailing map id outside at Muscatto Cove as chosen by direct sail. The coordinate system underlay is skewed so that errors like this are critical. This must be corrected for this game to be playable in the Realistic mode.

Same positional errors in Arcade game
Map shows ship In Matinique Straits...position error.jpg Position error Arcade mode open sea.png
Position discrepancies make game unplayable... correction of coordinate overlay link must be done to resolve this fatal error.

Game is unstable during play... just blanked out while in tavern in Philipsburg. Common error? Anyone else see this instability?

Another example of positional defect in Arcade/ Realistic game modes... Unplayable no work-around possible; embedded program error.

The first question is whether the fact that you have a fleet of 6 ships, when the normal maximum is 4, could be the reason for any of your problems. I'd certainly not be surprised if it's responsible for the game crashing when a companion ship is sunk.

The second question is, if you've changed the game to allow a fleet of 6, have you made any other changes?

Antigua is certainly playable, otherwise anyone playing the "Hornblower" storyline, the "Ardent" storyline, the "Hoist the Colours" storyline or the "Angelique Moulin's Father" sidequest would have noticed problems. Especially the last two since both "Hoist the Colours" and "Angelique Moulin's Father" want you to land at Muscetto Cove.

Please stop spamming these reports across numerous threads. Also, Windows messages like that are of limited use. Find the files "compile.log", "system.log", and "error.log" if it exists, and upload them using the "Attach files" button, do not copy and paste the entire text.

The missing icons for the silver brooch are yet another indication that your installation is faulty.

Also, do not post text or screenshots from log files. Just attach them using the "Attach files" button.

But until you have deleted this faulty installation and managed to install the game correctly, there is little point in trying to solve these problems.

Storms on the worldmap are presumably not affected by that code in "WhrGenerateValues.c". Have a look in "PROGRAM\Worldmap" - perhaps "worldmap_globals.c" or "worldmap_encgen.c" contain something useful.

Another question would be, why is there a report of Greek fire hitting a ship in that last screenshot? Only one ship should be using that, it's not in your fleet, and it shouldn't be sailing around as an independent ship.

Of course, if you've been modifying core game files, it's not too surprising if odd things are happening!

The modes are consistent with valid variable ranges, not significant to code function.

Storms on the sailing chart are as I've removed them in past versions successfully. Storm-free adventures!)

I'm now playing Dec 2019 version which has the bug that sinking a ship causes a "freeze crash" which can only be exited by C-A-D (ctrl-alt-delete)
Hoping someone with coding expertise can solve this riddle and restore sinkings to previous versions that did not crash the program: Anyone recognize an error? What is different from former versions where sinkings did not crash program? Why is System trying to load shot?

Actually I haven't modified game core at all... and you haven't played "Free Play" have you... as I asked you to do. Our conversations are at an end until such time as you have actually played "Free Play" Julian and tell me again that you don't experience these issues. Greek fire has been showing in every version I've played... probably specific to old code in Free Play which you have no experience in. As my example showed I alter the variables assigned to what is in the Program... if you are only playing a sub-Program you are not using the same code I am, apparently Just as I guessed, the code for historical and theme games are sub-program mods that affect the program when coders alter the main to make it compatible. My zeroing the WhrGenerateValues.c has had the effect that Free Play has not been plagued with overblown storms, only some rain showers from time to time... wonder why if that value table is an artifact and not functional... I also do not experience Tornados(?), again, when have you ever played "Free Play"?
Play it now and send me a screen-shot showing your ship (v22) in Antigua and exiting by direct sail, then a map shot showing your ship outside - not inside.
Perhaps Free Play was an original scenario and the Program code for it is in, and functional, Program while the games you play are add-ons ? for which specific functional subprograms had to be created for the special scenarios. Use my 0 modifiers for your play of Free Play and tell me they don't prevent storms on either map.

BTW, I'm a FORTRAN programmer, not C, C+, or C++... I follow program logic and make no attempt to change code since I can only see results of values assigned and do not understand the effect of programming words and phrases and do not know the formatting required. I do understand If/Then switches no matter the language used. Something in the Free Play program is antiquated hence the "Greek fire" which I have never understood but have no idea where it comes from or how to remove it... just like "Knipples" being not loaded causing a crash. Since no one with this programming skill has seen fit to review the Free Play code I'm not surprised that a lot of outdated code remains in play and causing crashes. Everyone seems to only have interest in adding historical and specialized subroutines to the Program body of code further complicating play of existing legacy programs. What ship in what module uses Greek Fire? what is it doing in Free Play? why has no one bothered to investigate and remove it? Does anyone maintain this module... appears not. Ask someone who has the skills and familiar with Free Play to review that module, play the game and trouble shoot these faults that keep appearing. Neglect of side effects when you mode the Program core to add a new scenario or feature should be of concern. Right?

Thanks Mate

That's what I thought which is why I sent them to you for confirmation. Has anyone tested the link posted on the webpage? I downloaded a dozen times, each time resulted in similar "drop-outs" maybe my service provider Comcast/Xfinity is faulty or the link has been corrupted. With such a large file it's easy to get drop-outs for many reasons.

Anyway I've given up on v22 and returned to previous versions but would like to get mods to remove obvious faults. Like "Greek Fire"? saving while boarding lockout, saving while sailing (disengaging) any help finding those files would be appreciated.

BTW... where are the info (instructions) for using this bulletin board? I'm using trial and error, not efficient or comfortable for anyone. Sent images since the details are so numerous and collectively important to the issues.

I have at most 4 ships in play... 2 USUALLY NOT 6... the other ships are game generated and not under my control. Any player can only generate 4 ships... that is the limit in creating objects.

Antigua in v22 is not the issue... as stated when my ship attempts to direct sale to Muscetto Cove, which is the one and only available destination available while the Sailing Chart shows the ship OUTSIDE THE ANTIGUA RING AT THE COVE... SEE IMAGE... the God's view chart shows the ship in the NW inside corner of the Antigua ring... this is a serious positional error since the two representations do not have the same coordinates. the error in the coordinate system used for positioning is the cause. ALL PRIOR VERSIONS DID NOT SHOW THIS... EVEN WHEN SAILING TO SAINT MARTIN THE GOD'S EYE VIEW CHART SHOWS THE SHIP INSIDE THE COVE OF THE HARBOR WHILE THE SAILING CHART VIEW SHOWS NO LAND IN SIGHT... EXPLAIN THAT? TO MOVE OBJECTS ABOUT THE UPPER VISUAL MUST HAVE A COORDINATE GRID BENEATH THE UPPER OVERLAY. WHEN THE TWO ARE NOT PRECISELY MATCHED A SKEW IN POSITIONS RESULTS SUCH AS WHAT WE SEE IN THIS SITUATION. HAS NOT BEEN THIS OBVIOUS OR "OFFSET" IN FORMER VERSIONS... EXPLAIN WHY NOW?)

I'm now playing the Dec 2019 version and entering and leaving Antigua with no problems... however, sinking a ship freezes the game...probably a "Do-Loop" caused by coding error leaving out a call from an "If-Then" code not finding the "Then" \. The System listing shows the program was trying to load Knipples!? What? This coding error is causing the game to freeze Sinking a ship does not involve a command to load Knipples! Somebody needs to go into the code and correct this error that the last amateur coder did not understand to remove as no longer functional as far as I know Knipples are not available shot in this version. Somebody removed the call that follows a ship sinking... whatever that was... and did not know they had done so... reversions to loading knipples was the left-over from a much earlier coding that was not removed when it was obsoleted from the game. Please ask a competent coder to use this system error info to locate the code module/Line number and FIXIT! otherwise this game is more stable than most and a lot easier to play.

I would also ask them to remove the cannot save while boarding or sailing block as it is no longer relevant and only frustrates the player when game crashes in scene changes.

If no one wants to do it... at least give me the module/line number and I'll do it to salvage an otherwise fun game. The "while sailing" lock out is when disengaging until the "all-clear" theme music plays... after which save is available.

Otherwise the only work-around is to not sink ships in an engagement which means you cannot fire back, or allow your companion ship to sink it by removing all their ammo before the engagement as well as put them "on station" elsewhere while you engage and capture the target. This is a lot of trouble when you often just want to sink a nuisance sloop!

Thanks for the help in getting this resolved so everyone can enjoy.

I started Free Play as Julian and did not find any problems with coordinates in Antigua.
Reinstall the game correctly.
1) First you need to install the original POTC game.
2)Then download the archive and installer:
1. Archive :
2. Installer :
The installer will unpack the top archive into the folder you need. There is no need to unpack the archive into a folder yourself.
3) Next, you need to download the latest patches on the first page
In this case, here is the latest update: https://piratesahoy.bowengames.com/potc/Grey Roger/post_1Jan_updates_120124.zip
These corrections need to be replaced with a replacement in the game folder!

Do you mean the zip file opened in the target folder? You are playing Beyond, not B14v22? Those are two different programs...right? Try v22...
Yep... just what I did 12 times with the same result every time. Did you download v22 from the link or are you using an already installed program or the Beyond (B15) game? I downloaded B14v22 from the link in the forum... is that what you used? Any chance that link is to a corrupted download? Why am I getting such issues as I've documented? Obviously the download was corrupted, but how? I have the original Akella 2003 2-disk file archived, and when I activate my file it boots and asks me to insert CD1 and start.... sound familiar? I've installed every version since 2016 this way successfully and had a playable game which I've been playing sequentially until v22 when everything has gone bonkers!

I really have no interest for installing Beyond (B15) until I have confidence in the program presented in v22. There is a disconnect somewhere and I need to resolve that before I jump to the next level. I've given up on v22 since the program installed is obviously corrupted and unplayable at my end. First time for such a failure with a totally new installer package, as I've been told, and restructuring of the program that has resulted in an unplayable download. Has anyone checked the download for a virus? I'm speculating on why this issue has suddenly appeared when the past multiple revision installations have always resulted in playable, but buggy, games. There is a reason for this happening and it's not the installation, which has worked every instance prior... right? So, what is it about this program or installer that is different? In the last few revisions sinking a ship results in screen freeze crash due to calls to unsupported abandoned files that result in Do-Loop failures.

Okay, I'll try once more to install, but I want a different download link than what is on the forum just to rule out that source for this problem. Is there an archive where the original download versions are available? Should be... right? Again, I archived the original Akella CD download and it is intact, not corrupted. When I put the file folder in the target file in the past that resulted in working play. This time the folder is NOT recognized by the installer. only when the file contents is opened in the target file does the installer recognize it and perform. Why? This should not make a difference in the result... right? However, I found issues like the 2004 sea.dll does not work and must be removed for game play. Some step is corrupting the download so that images are not installed, as shown, and, likewise, calls are not finding files. You have playable games... where did you get the download, same as me? We use the same Win7Pro OS, so where is the difference that explains the fault? I have run several anti-virus soft wares on my drive with nothing found. This issue is probably in the code or installer. Where else?

more Antigua position issues with another download from same source...
Muscetto Cove Antigua view.jpg Muscetto Cove Antigua Map view dislocation.jpg
Okay? Now best guess as to why? Both images of ship's location do nor match... any ideas? I've even used a different SSD for this attempt to rule out resident virus corruption. Save f5 function results in "Bad Save" Also "TAB" changes view to on deck telescope or gunner's glass view... sailing chart view does not lock chart... ship is centered, world whirls around. Beginning in Spiegtstown saves are good and normal. but once underway no save is good. remember this is the same result on a different SSD and download from the same link.

b14_beta4_final.tar is result of link: Build 14 FINAL Part 2: Contents Archive file - Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons mod for Pirates of the Caribbean is not a zip file
and not Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive which is the zipped .tar for installation. right? When that link is activated the b14_beta4_final.tar is reached and if downloaded is rejected by the installer... now what is going on? Where is Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive ? I downloaded it previously used it by inserting the zipped file into the target folder and got the installer to work... producing the defective game I've shown issues with above. Now...WHERE IS THE CORRECT CONTENTS ARCHIVE ZIPPED FILE NEEDED TO INSTALL THIS PROGRAM? WHY IS b14_beta4_final.tar THE LINK NOW BEING DELIVERED WHICH IS NOT THE CORRECT .TAR ARCHIVE WE WERE TOLD TO USE?
CAN'T WE GET THESE ISSUES STRAIGHT? WHAT AM I MISSING? WHERE IS: Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive ?

Those are the files which I use, and probably so do almost everyone playing Build 14.

In which folder did you put the installer, and in which folder did you put the contents archive? In which folder are you installing the game?

Actually I haven't modified game core at all... and you haven't played "Free Play" have you... as I asked you to do.
In fact, I've played many a FreePlay in the past, including some in which I completed "Angelique Moulin's Father" by sailing to Muscetto Cove to collect Francis Drake's sword. True, I very rarely play as Julian McAllister, though that doesn't matter because the worldmap code doesn't take account of your name or even the storyline. However, just this once:
julian.jpg

Starting from Nevis, I direct-sailed to Antigua:
map_after_direct_sail.jpg

There's no point in showing a screenshot of the shore itself because it proves nothing - the same location model is used for several beaches. Nevertheless, I went ashore at Muscetto Cove, then back to sea, then checked the worldmap again:
muscetto.jpg map_after_shore.jpg

By the way, if you're going to include screenshots, please do what I did - insert them as thumbnails, not as full images.

Okay... where do I find "compile.log", "system.log", and "error.log"? The entire text is not necessary to provide information? I've not been involved in your processes and do not have the technical insight to do things as you do. Until such time as I have comparable technical knowledge and skills I am limited to that which I can, by trial and error, find what works in passing issues and information to those who need to know what problems are existing so they can figure out how to fix them... right? What is lacking is a technical guide to such things as this. Why no information on how to do such as this? Spamming? Without guidance and direction I have nothing to refer to on how to document such issues as I'm continually finding. "Post links"... okay, tell me how... no instructions? I'm supposed to intuitively know how? Did you know when you first started? How did you find out how tho do that? Where did you read the instructions? Point me to the instruction book so I can read up on the unique and peculiar aspects of this site functions.

I keep hearing "it's an installation issue" PROVE IT! 12 installations using the provided components and the guidance of instructions for installation are very simple and easy to follow... not a problem... so why am I finding critical errors in the program play? No one Beta tested? I keep reading how the "insiders" are running games without these issues? Are you using the code we users are downloading? Try doing an install using what you have posted links for the components and see if you still get clean play. An example is the recent issue I'm now reporting where the link for the Contents Archive file link opens to: b14_beta4_final.tar which is not the file required and is an installation issue. Is anybody aware of this?
Try it! Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive = b14_beta4_final.tar ? is what is downloaded! Why? I've downloaded the correct Contents Archive previously but where is it now? Who changed it to this: b14_beta4_final.tar why? With no instructions I'm left with Trial and Error to navigate this site and attempt to use my QA/QC knowledge and skills to help people wanting to participate in this genre game play. I'm also unaware on information on how to navigate to the various forums as a result I'm posting into whatever forum that's relevant I happen to find. It's a learning experience an not at all intuitive or obvious or "user friendly". Why am I not able to stop this underlining? Where is the "off"? ?

Thanks for the help Mate (how do I stop the underline?)

So... where is the file "Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive"... not in ModDB which has a Build14 Beta4 final .tar file linked!
Can't run another "Trial and Error" experiment without the correct software module.... right?

What settings do you use, @Grey Roger?
Might just make things easier if I do the same.
Pieter-
I'm running into a problem getting "Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive" to continue to retry installing and running B14v22. The link to DB Mod
gives b14_beta4_final.tar which is not the correct zipped .tar file for this installation. I've made several complaints to various modders with no action to correct this. I've asked that the link call be redirected to the correct file... until this is done I can do nothing and will turn to doing my 23 taxes using H&R Block for entertainment... see what you can do... you have the POWER!

"b14_beta4_final.tar" is correct. You should not unzip it yourself, the installer will do that provided that the installer and the contents archive are in the same folder as each other.

Been installing game modules correctly for the last 12 attempts... all with the same results posted. since dropping Edge and using Firefox I was able to run the 2CD Akella downloading the game into a folder which when opened I found the same files I've used from my archived Akella file years ago... no change. This time the zipped .tar folder is not linked in DB Mod where the link is to b_14_beta4_final.tar not the correct file. No one seems to know this and without the correct zipped Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive can do nothing more. Are you actually replicating the actions of a gamer by downloading the files, creating the folder and using the installer? Or, are you using the insider developer versions of all these files? Any chance some corruption takes place in the files or in the downloading... such huge files prone to download dropouts. I've documented the issues... explain them... installation has been repeated according to direction multiple times with the same result... consistent, why?
Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is irrational. Start a little trouble-shooting with the same source downloads we gamers must use and see if you still get the clean play you are having... I'd like to know what is different between your install and mine.

Have Fun!)

That is the correct file.

IT IS NOT A ZIPPED FILE... IT IS A ".TAR" FILE Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive IS A ZIPPED FILE AND I NEVER EXTRACT IT SINCE THE INSTALLER DOES THAT... PER INSTRUCTIONS! A .TAR FILE CANNOT BE UNZIPPED BECAUSE IT IS NOT ZIPPED !!!

WHEN I INSTALLED THIS .TAR BOGUS FILE IN THE GAME FOLDER THE INSTALLER REJECTED IT AND DID NOT WORK. WONDER WHY? I WAS ABLE TO LINK TO Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive IN ALL PAST ATTEMPTS, NEVER UNZIPPED IT, PER INSTRUCTION, INSTALLER INSTALLED IT AND THE GAME OPENED. SO, WHERE IS "Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive"... DIRECT ME TO IT AND I'LL MAKE THAT PROMISED ONE-MORE ATTEMPT TO INSTALL A WORKING GAME THAT IS NOT PLAGUED WITH ERRORS THAT I'VE DOCUMENTED.

FAIR ENOUGH?

THANKS FOR THE HELP

zip files have the extension .zip... remember?

Okay, I didn't thumb them to ensure the detail of the position was visible since it is key to appreciating the disconnect between the two represented positions in the play . For instance in the thumb shown you cannot see the ship position. Can thumb be enlarged to view that important fact? Without pixels degrading the image clarity? I've not tried... didn't realize you guys need to conserve file size. As long as the issue is demonstrable I'll use thumbs... okay?

Watch this video and you may be able to install this game correctly...
As I've said each and every time this is cited... IT IS NOT THE INSTALL... I'VE BEEN INSTALLING SINCE 2016... I CREATE A FILE PUT IN THE AKELLA FOLDER (THIS INSTALLER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE FOLDER AND SAYS SO WHEN ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL) TRY IT YOURSELF FOR PROOF. I OPEN THE AKELLA FOLDER COPY CONTENTS INTO THE FILE (WHICH THIS INSTALLER CAN FIND THE ORIGINAL GAME) I THEN COPY THE FILE
Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive A ZIP FILE INTO THE FOLDER, I NEXT COPY THE ZIPPED 1JAN24 UPDATES, UNZIP IT INSIDE THE GAME FOLDER, PER INSTRUCTIONS, I HAVE BOTH INSTALLED THE PART 1 INSTALLER IN THE FILE AND OUTSIDE THE FILE SINCE IT'S SAID THE INSTALLER DOESN'T NEED TO BE INSIDE, AND I HAVE FOUND THAT TRUE BY OPENING THE INSTALLER, GOTTEN THE COMPASS ICON CLICKED IT AND IT DOES THE JOB WHEN I DESIGNATE THE TARGET FOLDER BY DIRECTING THE ACTION TO THE GAME FOLDER OR INSIDE THE FOLDER I STILL HAVE TO DIRECT THE ACTION TO THE FOLDER BY NAME. WHEN THE AKELLA FOLDER IS PRESENT BUT NOT OPEN FILES THE INSTALL IS REJECTED SINCE THE AKELLA GAME CANNOT BE FOUND. WHEN THE AKELLA FOLDER CONTENTS IS COPIED INTO THE FILE THE GAME IS FOUND AND INSTALLATION CONDUCTED. WITH THE BOGUS b14_beta4_final.tar THE INSTALLER REJECTS THIS AND DEMANDS THE Build 14 Final Part 2: Contents Archive BE INSTALLED AND SHUTS DOWN. PAST INSTALLATIONS WITH THE CORRECT ZIPPED CONTENTS ARCHIVE IS PRESENT, AS IN ALL PAST TRIES, THE GAME IS INSTALLED. NOW I CHALLENGE YOU TO DUPLICATE WHAT I'VE DONE A DOZEN TIMES AND TELL ME THAT b14_beta4_final.tar IS THE CORRECT FILE AND THAT YOU HAVE INSTALLED THE GAME USING IT AND THAT THE GAME PLAYS WITH NONE OF THE ISSUES I'VE DOCUMENTED. I'VE DONE EVERYTHING AT MY END TO RULE OUT WHAT I HAVE CONTROL OVER... I CAN'T DO YOUR JOB FOR YOU. DID ANYONE ACTUALLY BETA-TEST THIS CODE BEFORE PUBLICATION? HAS ANYONE TESTED THE PROCESS FOR DOWNLOADING, STAGING, AND INSTALLING THE GAME SUCCESSFULLY? IF YOU CAN AND DO THEN SOMEWHERE IN THE TRANSMISSION DROP-OUTS OR CORRUPTIONS ARE TAKING PLACE. AT MY END SEVERAL MALWARE SCANS HAVE SHOWN NOTHING, MY OS IS COMPARABLE TO GREY ROGER'S, I'VE COMPLIED WITH THE INSTALLATION STEPS AND SHOWN YOU THE ISSUES I'VE FOUND WHILE RUNNING THIS GAME VERSION... HAVE A BETTER EXPLANATION? AS SAID I'VE BEEN INSTALLING AND RUNNING VERSIONS SINCE 2016... I'M NOT A NEWBIE... SO STOP FALLING BACK ON THE EASY "HERE'S HOW TO INSTALL" DISMISSAL... DO YOU WANT TO SOLVE THIS? IS NO ONE ELSE LIKEWISE COMPLAINING OF ISSUES WITH THE GAME. WITH THE SHIP SINKING FREEZE OF THE VERSIONS SINCE 2018 AND THE CALLS TO INSTALL ITEMS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN PLAY CAUSING THE FREEZE I SUSPECT LOOSE CODE CROSS LINKING INTO TIME OUT DO-LOOPS.

1. THE CONTENTS ARCHIVE ZIP FILE MUST BE SEARCHED FOR, FOUND, AND SET AS THE LINK TARGET NOT THE CURRENT .TAR FILE... RIGHT?
2. INSTALLATION PROTOCOL IS NOT THE ISSUE CAUSING THE CODE-BASED ERRORS I'VE FOUND AND DOCUMENTED.
3. TO VALIDATE THE CODE AND INSTALLATION, START FROM THE BEGINNING, DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM ELEMENTS FROM THOSE LINKS LISTED ON THE WEBPAGE... USING A PROGRAM YOU'VE BEEN USING TO DEVELOP CODE IS NOT THE SAME AS THE CODE POSTED FOR OTHERS MANY UNINTENDED FAULTS CAN HAPPEN TO CORRUPT MODULES AND SUB-PROGRAMS RESULTING IN WHAT I'VE SEEN.
4. USE A CHECK-SUM METHOD OF VALIDATING CODE, WORKS TO REVEAL ANY CORRUPTION AND HAS BEEN AN INDUSTRY STANDARD.
5. RUN THE OFFERED PROGRAM AS A NEW GAME FROM THE SOURCES PROVIDED TO VALIDATE THAT PROCESS.

THESE ARE COMMON-SENSE AND INDUSTRY QA/QC STANDARDS... EXCEPT FOR MICROSOFT... RIGHT?

Bon Voyage Mates (One for all, all for one)

1) Install the game not on the system disk, but on another one.
2) Create a folder and put Build 14 FINAL Part 2: Contents Archive and b14 installer into it. Then run b14 installer.

Watch this video and you may be able to install this game correctly...
Yes I do not open the zipped contents archive file because directions say the installer does that... Look problem is not installation... duplicate the install yourself and see what happens with a total new download of the links offered... ok?

This has gotten quite troublesome but I will attempt to help. I will say right now that I have not read through all the posts spread out over the various threads as doing so doesn't seem like it would help anyway. I'm not a core developer of the Build Mod so I wouldn't be able to address issues with things which I am not familiar.

This is a documentation of how I just now installed and got Build 14 to work from scratch on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. This is regardless if everyone is already familiar with the process as it is merely a description of the steps I took. I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, and this is important to note because even though there are workarounds, the game will not work properly or at all with Intel graphics chips.
Furthermore, it is also important to note that I have capped the FPS to 60 for the game in the NVIDIA control panel. Limiting the FPS to 60 helps to prevent the game from crashing.

First I used my original CDs to install the game to D:\Pirates of the Caribbean\. In my case it is the UK version.
To avoid problems, do not install the game to any of the Program Files directories.
After the installation, I created a new folder in the root of D:\ and named it build14testcheck and moved the entire Pirates of the Caribbean folder in there.

Then I created a new folder on the desktop and named it also build14testcheck and created a pa and a moddb folder inside it.
I then downloaded b14_installer.exe from PiratesAhoy! and placed it in the pa folder, and then downloaded the same file from ModDB and placed it in the moddb folder.
After that I downloaded b14_beta4_final.tar and placed it in the parent build14testcheck directory on the desktop.
Finally, I downloaded post_1Jan_updates_120124.zip and placed it also in the parent build14testcheck directory on the desktop.

Now with all files downloaded, I looked at the checksums of all four files and found that the two b14_installer.exe files are identical. This can be done by opening a command prompt in the directory and using CertUtil.
Here are the commands and resulting checksums for b14_installer.exe, b14_beta4_final.tar, and post_1Jan_updates_120124.zip:
Code:
CertUtil -hashfile b14_installer.exe MD5

I now moved the b14_installer.exe from the pa folder to the parent build14testcheck directory on the desktop so that b14_installer.exe and b14_beta4_final.tar would be in the same directory, and then I ran the installer.
In the installer, I selected to install only the "Main Files" and "UPDATE Files", no other files. I selected the install directory to be D:\build14testcheck\Pirates of the Caribbean\.
After that was done, I extracted the post_1Jan_updates_120124.zip file to its parent build14testcheck directory on the desktop, and then moved the entire contents to D:\build14testcheck\Pirates of the Caribbean\, overwriting everything when prompted.

I then opened engine.ini to change the resolution to my liking, and then started the game.
In the game I went to "Options" and changed things to my liking, and then started a new free play game and sailed around for a bit, and did not encounter any errors and no error log was generated.

So, in my case, using my original game CDs and downloading and using the provided mod files, I was able to install and play Build 14 without encountering any problems. It would thus seem that there is no problem with the integrity of the provided files, and that any fault in installing and playing Build 14 is not because of them.
