WIP 38 gun Frigate Révolutionnaire of 1794

I have replaced my old cannon models with low-poly ones from the sophie/ vincejo...and she is still 116334 tris(90702 polys) :modding On the upside, I think the new cannons are an improvement :onya

Thanks MK! I only use delftship for the most basic shell of the hull, then I export to gmax where I cut gunports, give the hull thickness, add moldings, create the bulwarks, decks, keel, transom, and so on. I did more than that in delftship for the Prince de Neufchatel, where I made the keel, deck, and transom pieces in delftship. It probably took 3 times longer than if I had just done it in gmax, but It was my first model ever and I didn't know any better. :shrug

I have been working on some finishing touches for awhile, and realized I left out some details/ needed to prepare her for export. I discovered that there were two hulls right on top of one another, so I had to delete one of these by selecting each polygon, which took awhile. when I looked at the bulwarks close-up I realized they were a total mess, with edges protruding through from the other side all over the place. I cut them down to the deck, and then built them back up using a different method than the one I first used. I also added a 7th quaterdeck carronade port because that was the norm for 38 gun frigates, and considering the revolutionnaire was one of the largest 38s ever built...there was no reason not to include it. I moved the forward most main deck cannon so it will fire as a chaser, so the number of broadside guns remains the same. I fixed up the skylight while reducing its tri count, and I made a more accurate (and I think more poly-efficient) stovepipe. the mizzen shrouds needed deadeyes and chainplates which i had forgot, so I added those according to the plan of the HMS Forte. If anyone sees something wrong, let me know now before I export to maya :keith

oh and Amada, could you check out the carronades on the prince? if they cant be smoothed to look right I will need to slightly increase the tri count for the ones on this ship

Beautiful work, mate! She's turning out nicely. :dance

I think I can sort out the smoothing on the Prince's carronades, but if not I'll give you a shout.

I was working on scaling this ship by comparing her to the constitution, bellona, and surprise, but there seems to be a problem with the constitution and surprise. :facepalm The constitution is way too small, and should actually be longer than the bellona (constitution is175 ft on the gundeck compared to the bellona's 168 ft) the surprise is currently closer to the size of a 36 gun frigate of her time, rather than a 28. I know its a pain to resize ships once they are ingame, but I will be modifying the constitution model to her war of 1812 appearance as well as making a seperate 'united states class frigate' model based off of some features of the origainal plans for the class, and plans of the USS President from 1815. (different headrails and stern) As for the surprise.. maybe its not so important with only the revolutionnaire added, but once I make a 36 gun frigate (probably my next one) she should probably be rescaled. Here are some pics of the 4 ships scaled how i think they should be, along with the current surprise

I hate the idea of rescaling ships, but admittedly this is a big size difference. :facepalm
Scaling in Maya and re-exporting is easy enough, but it's the locators and crew walk file that need heavily modifying.
This is especially time consuming when you consider that the hull, masts and yards all need their locators modified when they're rescaled.

In the Constitution's case, I already have her in MB format from the time when I changed some of her UVs and added bow chasers, so she can be easily rescaled.
If you can tell me how much larger the ship needs to be (as a percentage), then I can sort that out. I assume all the masts and yards need changing too, though.

I'm also wondering about the film version of HMS Surprise... she seems rather big, somehow. Could you check her as well?
I've got her in MB format to make things easier, rather than you having to put up with deleting loads of corrupted components.

Hmm, alright, well about 124% of her current size is right when compared to the length of the bellona, but she looks HUGE! compared to my frigate in the background though, it seems right.

once you have rescaled her, could you then send me a copy of the hull? because every component except the outer hull is corrupted when I export from the gmviewer, and I will need the full hull model to fix her up and make her more accurate. Ive already started cutting down her bulwarks in maya, and so i just need to import the other parts and scale accordingly.

No problem, just tell me where to find the file and I'll take a look. :onya Also, about the prince, if you are worried about spending a ton of time on her, the grating thing should literally take 10-15 minutes at most.

OK then, 124% it is. I'll upload the file once I'm done, plus the HMS Surprise too.

Oh yes, the grating. It's really 'grating' on my nerves (bad joke, I know :cheeky ).
I promise I will sort that out as soon as I can. My only problem is that there's Beta 2 to finish over the next couple of days,
then next week I intend to get some revision done for my January exams, so I'll be hard-pressed for time. :facepalm

That's exactly why I need to give it a try as well, to see if I encounter the same problem.
Can the ship still be exported with the grating as-is, if neither of us can fix it?

Well I still need to talk you through the export process, anyway.
I just wanted to know if you'd be happy to try exporting the ship as-is, in case the model becomes corrupted when I try to fix it.

alright, but still try it when you can, and let me know whether it worked or not, and then we can start the export process, one way or the other :onya

Whenever you are ready, i can take a look at the Constitution and/or the movie version of the HMS Surprise for you :doff

No, I haven't done that yet. Feel free to make the change yourself if you want. :onya

Also, I forgot to say that the Surprise model has been slightly modified, because I'm optimising it before making a Providence version.
That's why the stern looks a bit unfinished at the moment, but it doesn't matter for scaling purposes anyway.

just got a look at the suprise compared to the greyhound, volage, historical surprise, constitution(still too small for now) and the bellona. assuming that all those ships except the constitution are the right size, the movie suprise seems right to me. she is a tad bigger than the volage(which is supposed to be 8 feet shorter) and a tad smaller than the historical surprise. here is a pic showing them all together
comparison.JPG

Interesting. I guess it was the width of the Surprise which had me thinking she was too big, but she does look about right in that comparison.
Thanks for confirming that. :doff
