DMC Norry

Right'O chaps. I finally acquired a copy of Dudley Jarrett's 'British Naval Dress' which covers the 1748 period onwards in good detail.
I fear there is little to be learnt beyond what we have already established in our thoughts about Norrington's uniforms, but for a few details:

1. He is definately wearing a captain's (over three years) undress frock uniform (it has lapels), but as before mentioned he inexplicably has the wrong coloured cuffs (they should be white) and he wrong style of cuffs (they should be slashed cuffs as seen in a painting of Richard 1st Earl Howe painted by Gainsborough when he was still a Captain.

2. His frock should contain 12 buttons up the front rather than the 9 that are visible in the films.

3. Analysis of the buttons reveal that they are those of a commissioned officer below the rank of Flag Officer of thr 1748-1767 period (when changes to uniform began in earnest).

4. The breeches should be blue as per the coat. White breeches did come in to use until c.1774.

5. The period uniforms must be pre-1767 due to the blue cuffs worn by the lieutenants, whom after 1767 were permitted/instructed to wear white cuffs and lapels.

6. The pockets on the uniforms are incorrect. There should be 3 button hole on the pocket flap, with two buttons atr either end of the flap. The third button is below the flap and not used. In the films it is apparent that the buttons are all below the pocket flap.

7. For some reason his lapels are too narrow. After 1774 the lapels were regulated as being a standard 2.5 inches wide, as I think are Norrington's. Comparison with paintings of the time show his lapels should be more broad.

To illustrate, this the correct Captain's uniform for Norrington as Commodore (recall his presence on the Dauntless in CBP not in Rear-Admiral Undress) as per the pre-1767 code (but you can't count the buttons properly

Derringer made a fairly good job of his skins, though he has rather too many buttons in use. I may consider (If I can work out how to recolour well, changing the breeches to blue however.

- Edit - Dam and blaste I seem to be forever editing this dam post...

Have you seen the Norrington toy then?:

Nice painting of Commodore Keppel there, Cpt Fabris. Might just have to add that one to my collection.
