APPENZELL, Switzerland - Voters in the heart of the Swiss Alps have banned naked hiking after dozens of mostly German nudists started rambling through their picturesque region.

By a show of hands citizens of the tiny canton of Appenzell Inner Rhodes voted overwhelmingly at their traditional open-air annual assembly to impose a $176 fine on violators.

Only a scattering of people on Sunday opposed the ban on the back-to-nature activity that took off last autumn.

The Gazette

MANCHESTER -- A man is being treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics today after his son tried to cut a pacemaker from his chest.

Jesse L. Fierstine, 32, of rural Manchester, was arrested Saturday for attempted murder after he allegedly struck his father, Charles Fierstine, 63, in the head with a flashlight and a piece of firewood. He then proceeded to cut a pacemaker from his father's chest using a pocketknife.

Charles Fierstine was taken to Regional Medical Center in Manchester before being transported to Iowa City for further treatment.

Investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, the Division of Criminal Investigation, the Manchester Police Department and the Delaware County Attorney continues.

No information was available Sunday morning regarding Charles Fierstine's condition.

Man cut off finger to protest overdue wages

Mon Apr 27, 2009 1:58pm EDT

BELGRADE (Reuters) - A Serbian union official who chopped off his finger and ate it in a protest over wages that in some cases have not been paid in years, said Monday he did it to show how desperate he and other workers were.

"We, the workers have nothing to eat, we had to seek some sort of alternative food and I gave them an example," Zoran Bulatovic told Reuters. "It hurt like hell."

Bulatovic, a union leader at the Raska Holding textile factory in Novi Pazar in southwest Serbia, used a hacksaw to cut off most of his left-hand little finger Friday.

Bulatovic said he decided to act after his deputy (boss?), "a single mother of three, was the first to say she would cut off her finger. I could not allow her to do that," he said.

State-owned Raska Holding was a major textile producer in the late 1980s with a workforce of 4,000. It suffered during the collapse of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s and a loss of markets and mismanagement during a decade of wars and sanctions led to massive job cuts, leaving the company with just 100 workers.

Some employees have not been paid for years, only collecting social benefits, like free medical care.

About two dozen workers went on a 19-day hunger strike last year. They want the company's debt to be swapped for state-held equity and a welfare program for those nearing retirement.

Bulatovic said his comrades will not back down from their demands, but they will postpone planned self-mutilations at least until talks with government officials in Belgrade expected Tuesday.

A sad story of strife.

Imagine having no alternative for work except for a company that could only offer minimal benefits, and no wages.

This is a truly sad commentary on government run business.

Hope this doesn't happen here, to the banks, and the insurance companies, and the auto industry, and...what is next??

Well, the oil and gas industry in this province alone is shedding 500+ jobs per day.

There's eighteen houses on our street in foreclosure, and nearly half of the others are for sale.

The largest auction in Canadian history is being held in Nisku, an industrial area just south of Edmonton, with 4,500 pieces of heavy equipment up for sale...and that's not including hundreds of luxury cars, fleet vehicles, work trailers, and boats.

Is it just me that thinks something big is coming? Like a revolution, but loaded with violence?

Has there ever been a Revolution loaded with well wishes and singing kumbaia?

The electric utility provider in my area announced the construction of a solar power grid out west of town and would need 1100 workers for 3 - 4 years. They held a job fair this past weekend at a large equestrian park.

12,000 people applied for those jobs in two days. The park was a mob scene. It looked like Woodstock. People came from as far away as Canada.

Thanks to the porkulus bill our area will also be getting a new $200M bridge that we have needed for the last 20 years funded. This will also produce about 3 - 4,000 new jobs for about 3 years.

We have over 10% unemployment in the area, so these two projects will give us a good boost.
