Hello all,

I'd like to ask for your opinion about changing names of some fictitious islands and towns into proper one, as they existed in XVII century. The first choice in the poll would be the best (and most time consuming) as there would be an option in buildsettings.h which would change that names or leave original ones. That would require to increase somewhat modpack size. Second option is more of compromise, as there won't be a "way back" to restore original settings, only by changing everything in texts back. Obviously, third option doesn't require any work.

Apart from interface, dialog and quest texts also loading screens should be changed and some other textures (for example, signs to towns Oxbay and Greenford on Oxbay).

I'd suggest following changes:

PotC name: Sugested name:
Oxbay (island): Barbados
Oxbay (town): Speightstown (british)
Greenford: Bridgetown (british)
Redmond (island): Jamaica
Redmond (town): Port Royale (british)
Falaise de Fleur (island): Martinique
Falaise de Fleur (town): Fort-Royal (french)
Isla Muelle (island): Puerto Rico
Isla Muelle (town): San Juan (spanish)
Quebradas Costillas (island): Nevis
Quebradas Costillas (town): Charlestown (british), Pirate Settlement (pirate)
Douwesen (island): Curacao
Douwesen (town): Willemstad (dutch)
Conceicao (island): Granada
Conceicao (town): São Jorge (portuguese)
Khael Roa: Cozumel
Isla de Muerte: Isla de Muerte

Here's some remarks:
1. I think place where Quebradas Costillas are located suggest that it should be rather Nevis or St. Kitts, in both cases rather English colony than pirate settlement. Thus, I'd move all actions which happens on QC (Artois & Voysey, Inez Diaz, Estrella's lover, brothel, pirate chief) to Tortuga.
2. There colony belonging to Portugal existed in the Caribbean, but I think we could give Grenada to Portugal. This way we won't need to throw Portuguese out of PotC.
3. Cozumel is a small island east of Yucatan peninsula. However, the indians who lived there were Mayas; Incas ruled in Southern America (Chile, Argentine, Peru) and the only island I know that they controlled was Isla del Sol on Titicaca lake. I can't imagine how Nathaniel would get there on any kind of ship... Besides, the temple seen in game looks more like Maya temple. I think we should change references from Incas temple/artefact to Maya.

I prefer first solution, although most complicated.

Please post your remarks and sugestions.

I have nothing to say about names being changed. The only thing I´m worried about is that the quest I´m working on uses the brothel, the store & the shipyard in the <u>Pirate</u> town QC.

I don't care either way as long as it doesn't cause any bugs. I do think that we should keep all nations for the towns the same as they are now. So Quebradas Costillas should remain a pirate town.

i'd like to keep the nations the same as well, but that would cause all kinds of comment about not being historically accurate.

On second thought, making Tortuga the REAL main pirate island in the game does sound like fun. However, I can see it causing quite some trouble when moving quests. Not to mention compatibility issues with the Tortuga Atmosphere mod. I can imagine quite some odd issues if the Nigel/Artois quest tries to start while three fights are going on in the background and there are skeletons and monks chasing around.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> Don't care much for it. All I want is a good Game.
Bugger the History!! I can see the mess already.
Sorry for being a pessimist!!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

nosie's point makes sense to me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> but i just don't like changing stuff that's fine as it is.

The changes sound great - however I think the bugs should be sorted first.
I can see that the combination of the existing bugs and necessary quest changes for the proposed Island changes could get very messy and give the game an unnecessarily bad rep.

I agree. Quebradas Costillas should remain a pirate town. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Sorry, only read the poll - I'm not against it, although I would use the PotC names. Make it an additional download, maybe?

I only want to add two notes.

The portuguese translation:

Grenada-->Granada
St George's-->São Jorge

About Martinique. I know Fort-de-France but not Fort-Royal. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I vote for: Replace the names even without a switch. But ONLY if it can be done without causing new bugs. I'd rather have a stable game with the old names than an unstable one with the new ones.

Reason for replacing the names: I am currently in the actual Caribbean and I'd like to see the real names, of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Reason for doing it without a switch: Adding a switch would be a tremendous amount of work and could actually CAUSE more bugs when small mistakes are made. And, as you know, small mistakes are made very frequently. So the chance of something going wrong when adding the switch is rather large.

So I recommend: Forget the switch for the time being. Too much work and could cause more bugs.

Hi all, I'm a newb here. I voted for changing the names without a switch. I originally began playing Age of Pirates and happened upon this website. AoP was quite a disappointment (am I too nice?!), but a month ago I was at my cousin's and he had PoTC which I promptly took to see if any better. The Build definitely makes PoTC the best pirate game.

Anywoo, my initial criticism of the Build was the mix of historical and fictional islands, so yea, I would definitely be in favor of a historical map.

well, i think that when the names would be changed without a switch, people would get used to it eventually, so i don't think that they would mind, including myself. one thing though is that most of the islands, except the non-stock ones, are quite a bit different from the real ones.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" /> All you do is creating bugs trying to do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/slap.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":slap" border="0" alt="slap.gif" />

do what? change the names? the only thing that needs careful whatching is that all the other names get changed correctly as well. the best system would be one island at a time, to avoid confusion.

To Pirate_kk:

About the Quebradas-Costillas' problem : You could create a new small town on another part of the island (Charlestown or Basseterre ). The pirate town (and the quests) would stay at the same place.

i don't see where that new city should be placed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> there's simply no room for it. also, then you would have to add a new port, which i don't think can be done. however, there would be the possibility of increasing the distance between QC and the shore, and then adding a road in that new space somewhere that would lead to the new city. the road to the city should be reasonably close to the shore, and the entrance to QC further in-land. i don't think that the pirates would place their town close to the shore and/or the city. maybe you could get to QC via a cave? first there would be the cave, (i have the one under the douwesen waterfall in mind) and then you would come to the current entrance to the city. before you would get to the entrance to the cave, there would be a fork in the road, one of the roads leading to port, the second to the new town, and the third to the entrance of the cave.

I don't know what's the best solution <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> . Anyway, Pirate_kk could say..but he seems absent these days on the forum <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

CHANGE IT! And you CAN make a new port on quebras costillas. I like the idea. nothing has to be transferred, and I always wanted redmond be port royal!
