Our friends arrive at the village and have a talk. Mercer stays there to set up a "trade". In reality Mercer tries to convince the villagers to help them in an attack of the nearby French town. Jack doesn't know this, but Edwards does. Jack and Edwards sail into the French town (they can safely enter, because Jack has been doing some off-the-chart trade there*) and Edwards tells Jack of the real plan. Then there's an attack on the French town and after the attack, the EITC marines capture the villagers. Edwards then knows that he was never given the whole truth either.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Couple of things. We know that Jack is the only one who knows where the location of this village is, and knows where "turtle rock" is, that marks from the shore the location of the village. Now, since we want the villagers to participate in the attack on the French port, then the village cannot be to far away from the port and Beckett must know this fact. Now, he could just send Edwards and Mercer there, but they would waste time fumbling around trying to find the village and Beckett doesn't want time wasted in this manner. So he needs Jack, but he needs also needs to give him a good enough reason so Jack will lead Mercer to the village. We are going to say that that reason is so Mercer can set up a "trade?"
I know I keep coming back to this but I think we have to come up with something that the audience and "Jack" will buy. Something that would make him betray the location of a people that he may or may not be doing some "of the chart" trading with as well. We may have to be more specific.
BTW, Pieter, I like that "off the chart trading" angle for Jack as a way that he can get the ship into the French port's harbor for the attack without being molested. We have to make sure that that is said at some point in the script, maybe when Beckett is talking to Jack in the beginning, he can make some sort of sly reference to Jack's... ahem.... trading with the port.

Right, I agree that this scenario is more plausible, but I would still like to get that part about the little girl holding the flower out to Mercer after the attack and Mercer just walking by her and the flower falling to the dirt and the scene closing with the flower being trampled by the marines. That would be powerful. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Also, like Old Salt says, this would also give the French captain a reason to enter the story and not have it be just a random encounter.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Agreed. It is a way to get most of the men away from the village and of course its better for the French pirate to have a purpose here for entering the story instead of it just being random.

Right, I guess no bumble for Jack getting out of the boat but he does screw up the map moment.

It makes sense. Like I said earlier, its a more plausible explanation then just having the marines march to the village and take it over. If we can just come up with a more concrete reason that Beckett gives Jack for finding the village and also include that flower scene I think we could then start writing up that scene.
