Alan, it could be done more easy way. After you ented the cabin the boatswain could appear here and in the course of their conversation boatswain could ask Nathaniel.

Do, you need anything, sir? And Nathaniel could answer him for example.

1. I am hungry, please bring me some good dinner. (After that Nathaniel´s health could replenish a little if it would necessary).
2. I will stay here by night today. Please arrange so as nobody disturbed me.
3. I don´t need anything for this moment.

Exactly. Another dialog option could be to ask him to send you one of your officers ("Captain's orders and would Mr. So-and-So be so good as to wait upon me in my cabin?"), who I think should be staying in their own little quarters when you enter your ship instead of standing in your cabin waiting for you.

(I envision formal dinners aboard ship... say suppose you could 'board' an allied ship to trade news, pleasantry and perhaps needed goods with the captain, over a long dining table in your cabin, servants standing politely behind all the officers... little powder boys running around too, if only I could make the scaled-down character animations work.)

I'd also love to have direct interaction with crew during combat - like you go belowdeck where the guns are and there're men crouched around them... I wonder if it would be possible to make it so you could peer out the gunports and see the enemy ships out there...
