Modding for COAS

Thank you for your replies Pieter. Very valid points indeed. Now we know, the programs folder is open and CoAS will be modable, I dont think my worries count. We should not care about the enduser of our mod - they will come, if we like what we do!

The key modders know best what and how to do it, and if our current setup of fantastic and skilled people all say yes, I am confident, that these/you guys will overcome every bump on the way.
 
We also shouldn't forget that COAS will indirectly furnish us many new content for the BUILD, but, only if they're retexture and reapropriated, i'm not sure about the rights questions...
 
I think that we don't <i>really</i> have the right to use AoP or CoAS content in the Build mod, though so far we've had no complaints about doing this.
Of course eventually we'd be doing to same thing in reverse, putting PotC and AoP content into CoAS. Provided that we do get to porting at some point.

I wonder if we should be required to have people install all three games before being able to install the final CoAS Build mod properly.
I hope not; that'd be really annoying to people. But it'd be the most legal thing to do; and would save filesize.
If we are to include, for example, all the PotC town models in the CoAS Build mod, the final Build size is going to increase by 100% or something like that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

To prevent major legal issues, we've been limiting the number of AoP and CoAS things we've been including, but I don't think we're doing a proper job of that.
We actualy have a whole bunch of AoP and CoAS location models added that are virtually unaltered.
 
I think the problem would be more important if the Build was a standalone mod... but as it still needs a proper version POTC...
 
Absolutely true; and if we were to port to CoAS, it'd still require CoAS to be installed.

I wonder... if we ever do port to City of Abandoned Ships, could we keep our "Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons" title?

Seb and Pieter: Unfortunately, we can´t just go asking them right away. Bethesdasoft owns the potc-gametitle and do not respond to our requests of dialogue. But as the original basegame is build up around the engine, the basegame needed to be installed for this mod should be also be CoAS - if we are transfering to Storm 3.0, CoAS.

About rights to use unedited content from earlier versions of a game in a newer version, I would sure like to know - something I can do about it?

I got my AOP COAS ver 1.3.0 . Storm engine 2.8 with open folders like potc has.

I got today the same, german version but english voices, 1.3.0 with paper map and paper user manual for 31€ (thanks to ebay). My first feeling after some time in COAS: The better game is PotC with the build mod. And Bugs? This is a game of the year 2007, so what did they in the last 2 years? Stop bugs ... never! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
The russians played the game a long time, also a longtime for killing bugs, but I can´t see bugfixing.
I think the best is the Program folder - to make it better some time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

And if I leave the mainquest, crash to desktop hundred times <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Philippe you managed to get it?! How did you do?! Shops?! or via an online order?

EDIT : I just realised it was probably not the topic to ask this, i hope i won't disturb too much ^^'
 
I had bought the game a few hours ago, like I said it's really like return of the legend with add-ons...
 
I had this game a bit, got the black pearl 2.0 mod and have been hacking away at the scripts for a while.

also tried the black pearl new mod, that mod would crash the game outright, might have something to do with no night.gm maybe. the 2.0 mod will load as a replacement ship swapping out the stuff for a frigate, but when you got demasted the game would crash, not sure what was causing that at all.

but i did get the ship to show up in the shipyard for sale, seems adding the ship to the net ship file is the key, the game seems to check that file for "real_ships" even for the single player game oddly. but now i cannot exit the shipyard after buying it without a crash rigging.dll loves to crash out when something isnt 100% square. but not sure what the issue is considering that the model and textures will load just fine when you swap it, but something is causing a problem at this point.

so older mods should work with maybe some tweaking, and maybe some removal of the checks this game seems to have locked in place for ship and item legitness. but the engine seems to be very very similar to sea dogs 2 just with more script checks in place. but models and textures from the old mods do seem to work if can navigate around the crash issues.

ahh i got part of it solved silly me i forgot to add the 1 to the ship files for the models when i was tired and made theblackpearl1 model folder.

I had no CtDs at all in my Russian version of the game except only one situation with Flying Dutchman's quest when one need to gathering pearls from skeletons.
