meshes and character models

Ok this might be a stupid question because someone has probably thought about it before me. But I gotta ask anyway, is there a way to just add new meshes to character models ingame? In that case it would remove the need to change textures for characters wearing armor etc, you could just code it using the new meshes.

But I suspect that it is hardcoded into the enginge.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

(Note: I've never coded a mod for POTC before, and I'm not sure about the engine limitations so no flaming please)

Not to worry mate, the only stupid question is the one you don´t dare to ask, I have that same concern about models, so far I understand that all you can do is swap heads from model to model and that you cant add new vertexes to existing character models, but I am not the ultimate authority so, I hope someone else can answer us. By the way welcome to the forum.

Thanks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Aye, we'll have to keep our hopes up. It would sure make things easier, such as moding a complete clothes/armor mod. Where you'd say, be able to buy new clothes or armor and then be able to equip it. Like hats, pants, robes, or anything you'd like.

Just a few ideas I've been puting some thought into

That would be nearly impossible. Characters ingame are one big piece rather than seperate models put together. To be able to buy any hat, boot, pants, shirt, belt, vest, armor, coat... anything... would require hundreds and hundreds of new models to fit each option with each option. Think, we have around two hundred different characters listed on Pieter's pirate page that are in the builds. Now, take each article of clothing and put that on each character once, then do it again with different pants... but wait, you want that shirt with these pants too. The choices are nearly endless.

I like the idea, but the game wasn't designed to let you pick and choose to make your character. I'm not striking down the idea, we just can't do it with this game... possibly another game could support this, like Pirates of the Burning Sea does.

Yes but I was thinking something simple. Take for an example, you take a naked model (without the private parts for umature audience <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />)

Then if you, for an example equip a shirt, it simply loads up the mesh and overlays the character model at the right position, coding the collision I have no idea how to go about, but shouldnt be impossible. (to make the "shirt" attatch to the body)

And after that all you need is different layers:

Toplayer: hat
2nd layer: jacket
3rd layer: shirt
4th layer: boots
5th layer: pants

Just an example of how I were thinking. But as I said earlier, im not sure if it's possible to load up completely new type of entinies in the game, but if you manage to code it. All you really need to do is make a basic function and after that, 1 piece of clothing could be as simple as a 5 line code defining the models and textures and what layer to use.

Don't tell me it's impossible, I so have my hopes up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> lol

EDIT:

The swords in the game I suspect, use the same principle as the one I tried to explain. But that is hardcoded so what we would need to do, is to write a new function something like that, for the game to use. If we accomplish that, the rest is a dance on roses.

So, you're thinking like the swords? You have a basic model with invisible locators around it, then you pick out different shirts, pants, etc that work just like putting on different swords and pistols... I get it.
When it comes to actually coding it, I know very little about if it is possible and hot to do it ifi you can do that. It looks like a no go, we thought about a new locator that would let you "sling" a musket on your shoulder, but no go.

Why don't you ask Pieter Bolen about this. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Now I think we're starting to think alike <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> And as I said earlier, I have very limited knowledge about the storm engine, but the scripts are all in C language so just about anything SHOULD be possible for as long as you don't need to change anything hardcoded into the engine, but this isnt really changing anything, rather adding something and make scripts to tell the game how to use it!

Captain Stockhaus,
Welcome to the site! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Are You talking about a set up similar to the Morrowind games; Your avatar can be clothed, or not, and the individual items of clothing are basically models themselves?

There was a game out on the net called Voyage Century, that used GM format models, similar to POTC models and apparently made by Akella, and part of the game play appeared to be that you could outfit your avatar in a number of outfits, and buy individual hats that your model could wear. For what it is worth I think what you are suggesting could be done, at least as far as hats go, but would involve a monumental effort.

I'm still waiting for Age of Pirates to come out because I have a suspicion that the models in that game are similar in many ways to the Voyage Century models, and from what I have seen around here, the AOP models can be used in POTC. What appears promising in this is the model heads are separate from the model bodies, with the POTC models, like Capitan Caceres points out, they are all of one piece, and where we are able to switch heads (Thanks to Inez Dias! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> ) not all of the heads work well with all of the bodies. Gaps can be created between the parts in the new model, and unless you can alter the model with a 3D modeling program it doesn't look very good.

Welcome again to the site, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

I tried to look that game up. Couldn't find anything good. Apparently its a Korean rpg thing, like PotBS. I'd really like to know more about this game and if it will be in english soon.

thats pretty much what I'm talking about! I know it would require a huge amount of work, but it would sure be sweet. But also I guess, it would be better to wait until after AOP release, to see if the POTC scene is still alive then.

So far, nobody has managed to add new meshes onto locators on characters. I'm not saying it's impossible, but nobody has, so far, figured out how to do it. It would add a lot of new options to the game: Clothes choices, parrots, etc.

Im pretty much on it 24/7 right now, not going anywhere with it atm tho, mainly researching for posibilities. I'll update this thread if I manage to come up with anything.

MMM, what about something simple, for example, adding ammo bags to a soldier model and then all soldiers could have ammo bags, is not customizable, but it´s a start. I will give it a try, to see if it works, wish me luck.

I wish you luck. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />
