The version of "Enc_Walker.c" included there is based on the faulty version which found its way into the last update. I've WinMerged it with the original version to get a file which is the correct one with your fix added. That is in the new update.

Here's another version, with your fix added but rigged so that all walkers want to be hired. I used that to test it, recruiting a whole load of people from the streets of San Juan. Not one crash from any of them. I also got lucky - this being relatively early in a game, most captains prefer to duel, but one of them surrendered and I hired him right away. He didn't crash the game either.
