it's the wreck of an ancient submarine. looks suprisingly like some versions of the nautilus.

okay, Arcanum history lesson coming up (with as many spoilers omitted as i can).

around 2000 years before the current storyline, there was an ancient technological society in what are now the Vendigroth Wastes. the whole place was flattened by a disaster, but some things still turn up once in a while, such as that submarine. it was the first of it's kind, built by professor Hunley. it was highly debatable if the technology of using pressurised air to ascend would work. it never returned to the docks after it left, but knowing where the wreck ended up, it apparently worked. it seems to have stranded in bad weather. the Vendigroth society never discovered it's fate, however. it seems that there were some survivors of the wreck, since there are some small ruins near the wreck site, made of the same slow-decaying metal.

the name Hunley is, by the way, a reference to the real life submarine the Hunley, which was the very first combat submarine to actually destroy an enemy vessel. this was in the american civil war.
