Build 14 Beta 1 Feedback

I have never seen that happen in my game :modding

As for sword fighting it is probably cause you have weapon quality on :shrug

I'd rather suspect "Block Damage" option. Rum Runner, do you have it on, and if so, are the fight less deadly when you turn it off?

I'm surprised with the attack spead as well. I'm 100% sure it used to be slower in stock PotC, and likely in Build 13 as well. I really don't know what was changed here, and when.

AYE... Block damage would be the factor in you taking damage while blocking and weapon quality would be you having to hit them more :yes

I have seen those strange graphic glitches as well. But haven't the foggiest on where they come from.
If anyone can give me a clue on one consistent thing about the situation in which they occur, that would be most useful.
I wonder if it's maybe one ship model that could be anywhere around the island that causes this.
Or otherwise something flag-related. But I really don't know. :modding

Try setting the game's difficulty level back to "Apprentice" and see if it becomes more playable.

I have no idea what's up with "the attacks being faster". Unless this is on the AoP style characters.
They do have faster animations, I think.

Actually, blockdamage WOULDN'T have anything to do with that.
All the operational code for that mod was already removed in Build 14 Alpha 8.5 Patch 1.
It seems there's some traces left, including the Advanced Options toggle, but these can safely be removed.
Basically, the blockdamage mod no longer actually exists.

What DOES exist is Hook's work on making Block and Pierce values of blades actually make a difference.
Weaponsmod on or off makes a big difference in weapon balancing. Try switching to the other method.

Of course not being able to survive 1 vs 4 fights is more-or-less intentional.
After all, being outmatched like that, you would definitly be in a very tight spot
and must be REALLY good or REALLY lucky to survive.
(To prevent confusion, I'm referred here to ACTUAL luck, not the ingame skill)

Where are all of the characters you could choose from? There is one character and one ship.
There is several storylines though, but yes, each storyline has only one character and one ship.
Pirate_KK is currently working on re-introducing the Customize Character functionality though.
So this is soon to be addressed. :yes

I couldn't even change the sails
Have you tried F2>Ship>Click on Sails>Select Sails?

What is it with the true or false settings? How do you change them?
You mean in Options>Advanced Options? You can select what you want there.
Changes affect a new game that you start.

It is insanely difficult at the start. I was getting attacked while still in port. The forts seem to be ineffective now. After more than a dozen sinkings I managed to get away and start the game.
Is this in the Standard storyline? And is the fort firing at you?
Try hoisting a flag friendly to France before leaving port.

It seems most fights happen at night during a storm. You have to run up a wave, look around, aim, and fire before sliding back down into the hole.
That sounds like some serious bad luck. Nobody intentionally did that. :no

I was a bit frustrated in the previous post. As my level increased things got better. Up to level 10 now.

About the graphics. I first encountered it when I fell into the sewer at Speighttown. Went around the corner and couldn't see a thing. It was like that 3 times, so I quit going there. At sea, it occurred mostly during battles during a storm. After 2-3 of those the game quit setting me up like that and the graphics were ok. I finally got meself a new boat! A European Barque. The graphics glitch was all over that boat at first. In the offship view the lines were radiating from the masts and rigging. Onboard they were radiating from the anchors and railings. After sailing to a few islands they calmed down and hardly ever happen now. I hope there is a clue in there somewhere.

About the sword fighting, I have noticed that also. As soon as I got a small sword (I actually have one) I took it to a smithy and got it maxed out. I still have to do a lot of cut and run type of fighting. You can't stand in there and hack away.

Me wants a tricorn hat! :8q

In build 13, in buildsetting.h, you could specify sails with emblems. No more. It is there that I find the true or false settings now. They don't seem to have any effect.
I did just find that sail setting. They are now set to virgin white because I have yet to sink a ship.

About getting out of port at the start.........

After wandering around town getting things organized I went to my boat and set sail. The 1st thing I noticed is that the Lugger doesn't turn. I found this out by crashing into a cliff at full speed. :shock glub glub.

Next I found that you can't start a fire drill unless a certain ability is checked. Without it the boat burns to the waterline. :eek:ops2

One battle stands out in my alleged mind. As I set out from the first port I saw some red on the long range thingy. When I got out I saw a boat coming my way, so turned around and went back into the harbor. The fort sank it for me and I went out there and started collecting loot. Then 2 bigger boats came, so I went back in. After a tight battle they turned and sailed out in flames. As they got out of fort gun range 2 bigger ships came into the harbor. My already shot up Lugger quickly got caught in a broadside. Glub glub. That was a 5 on 2 battle and I never left the harbor to start the game. :ko

Oh, something else. The first few times I visited Erethuera I got rammed into the cliffs, getting de-masted. The last time went ok tho.

Overall it's getting almost normal and I'm about ready to start the main quest. Oh. My 76 man crew now wants $22,000 a month. I just laugh. My rep is dashing and the crew is happy. :shrug

Don't use BuildSettings.h anymore. Use the ingame Options>Advanced Options menu instead. That works.

The lugger doesn't turn? That's a bit of a weird one. I thought she was supposed to be quite manoeuvrable. :shock

You got rammed into the cliffs at Eleuthera? Was that because you couldn't manoeuvre,
or were you using DirectSail and the game rammed you in there upon the island transition?

Aye aye Capn. But there really isn't anything I want to change there.

That was just at the very start. After my skill started going up, it started turning better. After a while I started liking it, except that it's just too small. My highest skill rank is in "repair".

Yes. I got out of the world map as soon as the lookout called "Land ho!". And went straight into the cliffs. I now approach islands at an angle instead of heading straight at them.

Oh yeah. Lookee what I found.

To answer some questions from above,I do play with the weapons mod turned on. As far as dying in four on one fights, that is fine. I do not expect to be immortal. Just for kicks, I have started a new game on apprentice level to compare. Wow! There is a huge leap in sword fighting difficulty between the two. On apprerentice everything dies with 1 or 2 hits, 3 at most. They still move a lot faster than in Build 13, but they don't do as much damage and they take a lot more.

:rofl
I didn't now the effect was so pronounced, but that's good then.
It actually does make the game harder, like it should.
We tried to make the game more challenging on default settings,
by making non-Standard storylines use higher difficulty levels.
Especially Bartolomeu and Assassin are set to really quite hard by default.

Well, yes, I agree turning the difficulty up should make it more... difficult. The jump between the two seems a bit much though. I normally played Build 13 on the third difficulty level and sword fighting wasn't this hard. I do use the weapons mod, but I make frequent visits to the blacksmith. I like that because the later game stages need more gold drains. I did have the damage on during blocking, but turned it off in the apprentice game. I'm sure that accounts for some of the difference, but not much. Am I the only one having this issue on higher than apprentice levels? If so, then maybe I'm just slowing down in my old age.

I also ran into a problem that I haven't seen commented on here. Again, doing the original storyline, I just escorted the counter-invasion force to "the city formerly known as Greenford", got the quest updates, and sailed off to Grey Rock Bay. When I go to shore, nothing happens. No Frogs jumping all over the place, no ship captain or guide to greet me, nothing. Anyone else run into this?

I know people who have finished the standard quest using Beta 1 so I think it is unique to you :shrug

Block damage does quite a bit actually cause it stops you from blocking until they all hit at the same time ;)

The weapons mod (even with PERFECT weapons) wont give you weapons that do the ammount of damage they do with it off :no

As I said before, the BlockDamage mod doesn't EXIST anymore.
Only the toggle is left, but not the actual code.
Please remove the toggle in the Patch.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but I have a problem at Antigua. The first visit went well. The next two visits I got stuck on the dock. At first I could slide sideways, but not forward or back. Then all motion was blocked. I have since declined two well paying customers for escort there.

The severe fractal graphics bug is still there. If I dump this game, that will be the reason. Hoping that someone might find a clue, here are my hardware specs and some history.
Intel mobo, Q6600 quad @ 2.5 ghz, 4 gb ram, nvidia 275GTX, X-FI fatality sound, Vista 32bit. It had problems for some time with vc drivers. They would crash and restart at least once a session. After discussing it with nvidia and trying all of their solutions, I am now using the 186.18 drivers for stability.
Sometimes it is so bad that I can't see the gun aiming circle. Turning and looking at land makes it stop, as well as hitting F2. Sometimes it happens when I am far, far from any land and sailing solo. Possibly it is water related. Anyway, I hope someone finds the cause of this.

Well, I think I have discovered the source of my problems.
Build 14 kept getting worse and worse until I decided to delete it and the installer. Dl'ed the installer again. Used every maintenance on this puter just to make sure it's in good order. Then installed the original game back into the D: PotC Build 14 folder. Windoze is on the C: drive.
The first hint that it is better this time came when I discovered that the "options ->advanced options" actually scrolls now. There are a whole bunch of things to change now that were not there before. :woot Next surprise came in the player screen. Neither the player nor quests would scroll before either. Now they do! :mi
Now it was time to play. I ended up in Speightstown this time. Everything went normally. I went into the jungle. 5 opponents and 2 whacks to die on "journeyman" level. That's normal. Then the sailing. Clear weather and no pirate ships! :onya I was escorting a ship later on when we were attacked by 2 pirates. After a long battle we managed to drive them off. :ixi The best part is there was no hint of the fractal patterns at all! :woot

I'm sorry it took me so long to do this. It is very rare to get a bad download, but that appears to be the case. Now back to testing, er playing. :whipa

Its what we recommend for people to do when we have an unexplained error, try and full reinstall. Quite often this does fix it :yes

I'm baaack.

A little more history. I reinstalled, played, got off, and posted here. Went back and played some more. Fractals all over the place. I noticed the fps was all over the place. I have vsync on to lock it at 60fps. So something was over riding Rivatuner, which I use. Hmm. Rebooted puter, and got 60fps and all clear. No other game I have does this. Still experimenting.......

Another thing unique to this install is invisible sails on some ships. It doesn't affect gameplay, but looks bad. I have one game that gives invisible things if multisampling is used. I set it from "supersampling" to "off"for this one. Invisible sails and some fractals. Did I get another bad download? This is very unusual because I have a 2mbs cable connection. There is something messed up in the sails selection in options --> advanced options. The pirate ships have black sails with emblems, but all other ships have plain white sails or none at all. My ships always have sails.

Normal stuff: I get stuck on the pier at Antigua and Alice Port, Eruethra. Havana has many missing textures.
