The top left ship is your own. The other three are for ships in your fleet. You have either bought or captured one ship, which is the one in the top right. (Is that the Oiseau?)

You can buy ships in shipyards. Or you can sell them. If you don't need that ship in the top right square, sell it.

If you do not sell the ship in the top right square, the next ship you capture or buy will go into the bottom left square - the one with the arrow. The next one after that will go into the bottom right square. You can not capture or buy any more ships when all those squares are filled.

If your "Luck" skill is at least 3, preferably higher, try gambling with people sitting in taverns. One of them should eventually offer a very special prize...

If your reputation is high enough, go to Isla Muelle town hall. As well as the governor, you may find someone who wants help finding his son.

Also if your reputation is good, talk to Father Bernard, the priest at Redmond. He has a job if he thinks he can trust you.

Have you seen some women standing near the town hall at Douwesen? Talk to one of them. This should start the biggest secondary mission - it's almost another entire story!

Press F2 to see your character. Your reputation should be there as one of these:
Horror of the High Seas, Bloody Terror, Swindler, Rascal, Neutral, Bloke, Matey, Dashing, Hero...
... which Google translates as...
Orrore d'alto mare, Terrore sanguinolento, Imbroglione, Mascalzone, Neutrale, Tizio, Compagno, Focoso, Eroe

I'm not sure what you mean.

Your level does not depend on finding other people.

You will find other characters by completing some of the secondary missions. You can also get officers by talking to people sitting in taverns - some of them will offer to join you. And when you are in Redmond port, look for Rys Bloom. You may be able to hire him as an officer.

As I said before, some naval battles are part of the story. Also, you will need a much more powerful ship later because you will need to attack a fort. Before you can attack such a large ship, you will need something bigger than the small ship which you have now. Start by trying to find and attack an enemy merchant ship. Merchants are easier than warships.

There is the unmodded game, which is what you're playing.

There's the January installer for the Build 14 mod, also known as New Horizons. This expands the game a lot! It fixes some of the secondary missions from the original game, adds a lot more, adds some entirely new storylines, and much more. It is so different that it is effectively a whole new game.

And there's the update which fixes some more bugs and adds a few more things to the January installer.
