Additional nations in game

duh. but i'm not going to give up all those other mods and get a bunch of bugs just to get a bit more pirateyness.

The USA are in the last two periods, being "Revolutions" and "The Corsican".
How about we don't add an additional nation to ALL periods, just to some?
We could, for example, keep the "Golden Age of Piracy" devoid of any additional nation.
How about "Early Explorers", "Spanish Main" and "Colonial Powers"?
The game becomes less piratey when you get more ships to sink and more nations to annoy? Ok... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

well, the pirateyness is more a matter of uncomplicatedness for me. with a huge amount of nations, i just have to get way too involved with politics, and i nearly always screw that up at least once. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ko" border="0" alt="ko.gif" />

You don't HAVE to! You can just sink them all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

I sometimes play pirate, but usually English, and I think the more nations the better. As a pirate you get more ships to sink and nations to fight, and as a naval officer it would give you more diversity of opponents and allies. I think a toggle would be best.

Listen to Morgan. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />
As far as I'm concerned, there's no point in adding any new nations unless all nations are actually different.
What's the difference between having (I am exaggerating here) 100 nations and 1000 nations?
We just need the nations we REALLY need and make sure they really DO add something to the game.
This is something the RTS game developers also noticed.
Games like Age of Empires I and II had dozens of nations, which were all virtually the same.
Age of Mythology had three nations that were REALLY quite different from each other.
Each had individual strength and weaknesses.
I believe that makes for better gameplay.

That's one possibility, but I was thinking more along the lines of various strengths and weaknesses for the nations.
Similar to the national design modifiers for ship strength, speed, cargo capacity, etc.

that's more or less what i meant. i can't think of any strengths or weaknesses for nations though. such a thing was never quite implemented in the game.

Theoretically we could make some addjustments for characters of nations. For example, Spanish soldiers would in general have more hitpoints than others to simulate their 'behaviour' during battles, since they more relied on their quantity (at least when Spanish Armada fought with English pirates they tried to board enemy ships while Englishmen used better maneuvrability of their ships to sink Spaniards with artillery - thus, in such example, Spanish would have more hp and better grappling but Englishmen - better Cannons and Accuracy skills, as well as Leadership - for example, Spanish captain surrendered his ship, "Rosario" as soon as he found out that he would fight against Drake). Dutch would be strong in trade. French would be better in construction of large and ships but in the later eras (before Richelieu their navy was import from Holland). Portuguese shall be weaker as time progresses and have poorer, older ships.

That's how I understood Pieter's idea. Am I correct? All further suggestions will be appreciated.

English soldiers should have better stats in fighting and they should be more powerfull then any other soldier (redcoats were feared for their skills and discipline). between 1630 and 1713 the Dutch should have the most ships available.

The English can be better cannoneers and superior fighters, the French should have a bonus to sail/rigging damage and faster sailing (all for running away! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> ), the Spanish have fat lewts on their equally fat galleons, the dutch holds be clogged with clogs. The portugese be like Jawa traders, numerous, annoying and easily squished.

Just for starters

Then it would really make a difference of where to buy your ship. Maybe you can buy your stuff cheaper at the dutch islands (for the trading). And maybe add a possiblity to recruit soldiers for your ship (so your boarders are stronger and get an uniform)

wouldn't really make a difference for me then. i'd just continue stealing everything, or sneaking into town and buying it, trashing the fort afterwards.

That is EXACTLY what I'm talking about! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
The advantage is that it adds a distinction between all nations.
Now each nation would require different tactics to defeat.
For example, as per Pirate_KK' suggestion, boarding a Spanish ship is very hard.
However, if you use grape shot at them, they might quickly surrender.
And they might have a big cargo of gold aboard. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Currently in the game, ships are either neutral, hostile or friendly.
However, if different nations have different strengths, it actually MATTERS
which nation you pick a fight with. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

I was just thinking, if there still be a free slot, why not include a pirate brotherhood? They existed historically, though usually shortlived, and would add to the piratey-ness of the game. It would also save having to add an obscure naval power to the game, whose actual presence in the caribbean is probably debatable at best.

An enterprising quest writer could even make a storyline of it, rise through the ranks to lead the brotherhood or something like.

We already have a pirate nation though. What would be the difference between the pirate and pirate brotherhood nations? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
