So I finally was able to host a game. It was me and two other guys against a large convoy, no air cover, random escort size.

So we move into the attack run, one guy goes down due to a DD, I get about two ships, the other guy scores a few hits but nothing sinks. Later in the game he goes down and I take out a DD on my tail with a stern shot. I play cat and mouse with the other DD and launched at least eight torps at him during the course of the engagement, last torp was from a stern shot, got him head on.

Surfaced and rushed the convoy deck gun fireing away, sunk a ship with my deck gun, sunk another with a few torps. I crashed dived after I got too much damage than what my crew could handle, exit the game after.

All in all, got 19556 merchant tonnage, 2000 warship tonnage.
Sunk two small merchants, one T2 tanker, two DD Hunt destroyers and two Coasta merchants.
This game rocks, the battle was at sunrise, clam seas.....beautiful.

Dam ,sounds like that one was a hoot mate,did ye get Patch 1.2 yet,unbelievable game comes out here March 17 and two patches,unbelievablely excellent customer support from Ubisoft, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I love this game..

Lost my first Uboat after going out on my 6th patrol.

Found a convoy and decided on a night attack.Sank 4 ships with 1 torpedo to each using the magnetic plus impact and set to detonate under the keel of the ship.
By this time I had 4 destroyers closing in fast on my position so I did a crash dive to 80 meters and silent running.Spent the next hour and a half dodging the destroyers depth charges. After awhile I thought it was all clear so I came to periscope depth to take a look around only to be detected and rammed by one of the destroyers.

Aye mate, destroyers can be tuff te shake, once detected,I go te flank speed wid a hard turn an make a run fer it with a couple O' more hard turns away from whar sunk ships show up on map,ur me favoite, pend'n how deep it is put her on de bottom an shut er down and wait em out, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

One trick I have since learned in attacking convoys is to get right into the convoy itself. After you are detected,or even before, move your sub right underneath one of the merchants and stay there moving and turning with him.

The destroyers cant reach you to depth charge you nor can they fire on you with their guns without hitting their own ships they are protecting. If you do this with the last ship in the convoy you can pretty much just send torpedos right up the rear ends of any merchants in front of you without any risk to yourself. After knocking out a few ships do a fast sprint to the next ship in line and get under him and repeat the process.

Its hard to stay with the merchant but it is quite effective when you do it.

Nit tried that yet, give it whirl next time, most O' me encounters are single merchants though,11 patrols in career an de year be 1940 <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yup same here. I've just finished my first mission where i didnt find anything until the retuurn trip. Thats when i chased and sunk a couple of lone c2's on their way to England from what looks to be Sweden (Hmmm... thought they were meant to be neutral!) ... anyways i got too greedy and spent too long cruising around looking for more tasty targets to pick on. I ended running out of juice before getting to my home port.. D'oh! But the game didnt penalise me for it.. i mean i was within sight of my harbour and although embarrassing as it may seem i can live with it as it was a sucessful mission as far as i was concerned. But thats a different story.
As for sinking my targets i found that the best thing to do it fire a salvo of two.. especially if you have a good supply and are on your way home. Dont just go for the default spread angle because both will probably miss. when i was doing the tutorial training missions I found that if a ship saw my trails comming at 'em they would simply speed up or slow down. It happened so many time and they just about managed to edge their ship past my speeding torp nearly every time. this was even from close range. The only way to make sure is fire two at a slight angle of divergence the worst that will happen is that you will have wasted one torp but it dramatically inreases the odds of at least one good strike happening.

Aye. mate,I take bearing from enemy ship bow, another te her stern an set me gyro angle, lead to target a few degrees,an most times ye get two hits on a salvo shot <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Do you know how to target specific areas of the ship like the fuel tanks on merchies and/or ammo stores on warships??

Most times you can take out most Merchies with a single torp shot to one of those 2 areas. This is a run down on how to do it from someone at the Silent Hunter 3 forums if you dont know.

First, you gotta be within 1000M of your target. Second, you need to be close to 90degrees AOB. Third, you need to have your scope locked on the target, and have your recog manual open.

If you satisfy these conditions, the target locations show up when the gyro angle of your torpedo is between 345-015 degrees. Once the boxes show up, click on one of them and your torp will target that location- based on if you have your scope locked on the target's center.

Make sure you set your torpedo to Impact and set the speed before targetting like this, because I think I remember trying to change the settings after I did the auto target, and it didn't let me.

One thing to note, is that it will constantly change the depth of the torpedo based on where the current ship is riding in the water at the present time. So, as the target ship goes up and down in the swells, your torpedo run depth will change with it.

After targetting, if you jump to the TDC screen you can watch the run depth needle go up and down. What this means is that a small ship riding in rough seas can cause the run depth to be too shallow or too deep at the time of shooting- so be careful doing this on smaller ships in big waves. Bigger ships like C2 and above this doesn't matter too much.

Take the time to get set-up around 500meters or so and just shoot one torpedo at the fuel tank of ANY ship with impact and I use fast speed. Even the mighty C2 cracks in half with one shot to the fuel tank. The closer you are, the more likely you are to kill your target in one shot - auto-TDC or not- you need to be close to ensure accurate placement of your shots.

Aye,sunk many C2 wid one torp by targeting midship, they split in two, aircraft carriers are fun te watch as they explode ye can see aircraft on er deck explode, watched one aircraft explode ,split in two and de nose lift up in the air engulfed in flames, jest way to much fun <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Do you guys know about the ability to run the game at higher than the locked 1024x768 resolution???

Looks and runs great in 1280x1024 with no AA or AF settings on.

Just had my best patrol yet...Mid 1942 and snuck my Type VIIB into Scapa Flow and blew away 2 Fiji Class Cruisers anchored in the harbor as well as a C3 merchant ship.

<a href="http://mohaaoutpost.homestead.com/files/Fiji_Cruiser_1.jpg" target="_blank">Fiji Class Light Cruiser 1 capsized in Scapa Flow</a>

<a href="http://mohaaoutpost.homestead.com/files/Fiji_Cruiser_2.jpg" target="_blank">Fiji Class Light Cruiser 2 capsized in Scapa Flow</a>

Had a devil of a time getting out of the harbor..shortly after the torpedos impacted I had aircraft and destroyers converging on my location.I managed to get out but with 6 crew dead and very serious damage.

Nice screen shots, aye scapa be a nut cracker te get in an outa fer sure'heard talk about runn'n higher resolution, run me me game wid aAA on no probs, jest bought a new video card te replace me GF3 Titanium 500,upgraded te FX5500,twas cheap an noticed a big diffrence in speed an graphics, especialy in POTC <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I just experienced my own "Das Boot" scene but with no happy ending.

Its summer of 41, just bought a VIIC since they were sending me on long patrols and my '39 IIA could not handle it.

I was a grid or two away from the southern coast of Ireland, still going to my patrol zone when I get a radio message of a convoy spotted.

I arrive at the hunting ground and fired three torps at a T2 tanker, two miss, one hit. Fired the other torps at C2 cargo, all miss. Fired my stern torp at another C2, got a hit.

Thats when my own personal "Das Boot" moment came.......DD spoted me and droped a few charges, after a long engagement I got out unhurt and lined up for another shot from a forward torp, fired at another tanker, dud. Another DD got sight of me and depth charged me. Took critical damage to my tower, flack and deck gun. Dove..........got depth charged again, heavy flooding in my electric engine and stern quarters, damage to my stern torpedo and command room.

I stoped the flooding but my boat was sinking.........went into full reverse, no help, blew the ballast, no help..........Finally the flooding was under control but I blew ballast again and ended up on the surface.

I dont know how many DD where up there but i dove as fast as I could. I got dc again and again......I was sinking again, three men dead, command room damaged, forward torps, stern torps, radio room and bow quarters all damaged, not to menttion i still was pumping out water from my stern quarters and electric motor room.

I was at a depth of only 130.........everything was slowy being stabalized, no more compresed air left, full stop. Suddenly.........my sub must of drifted and I ran around, heavy flooding in radio room, bow quarters and stern quarters. I could hear the u-boat rubbing up against the ocean floor, glass shattering, water everywhere.

All compartments damaged, three critically, mainly the ones with heavy flooding.
Unfortunately I could not stop the flooding, I moved everyone out of the forward compartments to the rear but it was no use, water kept comming in faster than my men could pump it out.

Died at 135 meters due to flooding. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Did similar thing at Scapa Flow,de harbour be rather shallow, after sink'n battleship got pounded by depth charges and scrape'n de bottom O' de ocean sunk me sub,now I be sure te check wid me navigator fer depth under keel,an run flank speed wid hard turns to avoid those nasty barrels O' fun <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
