Sid's Pirate VS Uncharted Water

I don't see any problem. With $10 per hour I can live well in US. So 1000 yen per hour (USD10) is not a problem I suppose.

Depends upon how much that yen will buy, there. It may not be the equivalent of what ten USdollars will buy - OR, it may be MORE! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I lived in Japan for four years and my wife is Japanese, so trust me, $10 an hour will not cut it. You might be able to eek out a life in a small town out in the country, but in the cities you would be in big trouble. The standard pay for an English teacher in Japan is about $30,000 a year. I was teaching out in the country and lived a decent life. I could pay for a small apartment, and I mean small, utilities and a cell phone. I ate cheaply and had no home phone. Luckily I had a car that was provided by the school, but I had to pay for gas, which is 90 yen per liter ($4 a gallon). I had enough money left to go out and enjoy myself a little. I knew teachers that had taught in Tokyo. They made the same $30,000 and were basically destitute. All their money went to bills, and some needed a second job to do that. They had no car and no spending money.

Considering $10 an hour is about $20,000 a year, I'd say you would need a second job to even live out in the country.

By the way if anyone gets a chance to teach English in Japan, I highly recommend it. Japans a beautiful and interesting place. Just be prepared to work hard though. Each school is different, but I was working 6 days a week, up to 12 hours a day, not including lesson plans. I worked for a small private tutoring company. I think teachers working for bigger companies or the public schools have better hours.

Yes! the cost of living is so much higher there. $10 an hour is nothing.. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

P.S. are you, or were you in the military? Please PM me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Akubi;

Are you by chance a minor living with your parents? I do not mean to offend, but I see no way you can live well on $19,200 a year. You might be able to exist on that, but, live well????

GIJoe,

I am from Malaysia but I lived in US for 6 years just to study. I've worked for jobs that pay $5.00 per hour, $8 per hour, $10 per hour and also $500 for every two weeks. I have finished my job on $500 every two week so I am back down to $8 per hour temporary. I am doing fine with that. So I think $10 per hour should not be problem. Unless of course we want to save money for house or family raising. I can still pay for secondhand car plus insurance, a great computer and a nice apartment with a roommate.

Akubi;

Ahh, I see where I am off. When you said you could "live well"... I guess we just have different ideas of what living well is <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

For me, having to have a room mate and a 2nd hand car is not living well. But I am just used to an income at least 4 times what you have posted above..

But, back to the topic, I guess.. I have been playing Uncharted Waters: New Horizons for about 3 days now. I will admit it is addicting. I have no problem with the graphics and such. The content is good and the game premise is sound. This needs to be updated and released in 2005. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Back when I first played the original Pirates, I throughly enjoyed picking a small English town and making it my mission to boost its economy and get the town to thrive and grow. I did this through trading only. I very much enjoy the trading aspect of games <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Yeah UW2 is good aint it.

I think it would be hard especially now for a US game dev team to come up with as thoughtful a game when most of the money here is in sports sims and `shoot-em`-ups. The german dev outfits are actually promising they are big into the whole sim thing (sim pizza anyone?) unfortunately most of it is budget sim with `made-in`-2004 blocky 2d graphics , I believe tortuga is/will be `german-made` and has the potential to be great.

I thought sid got some good ideas, but most of the stuff that work well in the remake vs something like UW2 was the arcade sequences. the budget sim trading stuff he threw in was pretty superficial probably less complex then even something like dopewars, and the rpg elements are pretty weak. They should have marketed it as an action pirate game. Just needed to make realtime (instead of `turn-base`) 3D land battles and they'd be all set.

as it is this game is kinda neither here nor there.

Good points v4pirate.

I think that today with peoples fascination with graphics, there is no way we will see another game with the scope of UW2, unless people are willing to take a huge hit to how the game looks. Developers simply don't have the time or rescources to make a game that plays as good as UW2, and looks as good as PoTC. If I won the lottery, I would fund such a game though <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Personal wealth would not be worth that game.

I bet most developers use all that fat cash they made to juice up their greasy bank account, that is all they care about the money.

I've been playing some more sid's Pirates, I cant believe how lazy these developers have became. I cant even buy ships, in UW2 u could build new ships or buy secondhand ones which had their hitpoints reduced. the interface of this game is so badly designed, it took me awhile just to figure out how much my ship can carry and how much it's carrying. I wanted to shift some goods from one ship to another but I cant, and when I sell my flag ship all the goods that was in the second ship I had was gone.
Oh forgot to mention I hate the pace of this game, it's just too fast!!
SID U SUCK!!
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

I saw the UW Online demonstrated at E3 this year... I was most impressed with the idea that even with the nice graphics, it will STILL be a GLOBAL game...

Imagine, an online world where you can sail from one port to another and meet other online gamers, conduct business with them, &tc... Intriguing enough for me to think about getting it if it IS made in English... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yeah I might think about it too. But it has anime graphics, and a monthly fee, if I can think of one more strike, its out <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

From the screenshots I saw it's Japanese, apparently the first release will be in Japanese, dont know if there will be an English version or not. It's very tempting but an online RPG can be very time consuming.

Umm.... actually Sid is right, real pirate didn't buy or sell their ships. Go check out some books about Caribbean piracy from library. Would a lawful citizen like you buy a car from a known car thief? Or sell one to a known terrorist for car bomb? Or sell a stolen car in public? Historically only one pirate bought his own ship, and that was before he became a pirate. So it's for realism's sake. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Well, KOEI HAS opened up offices here in the USA, with an eye towards more development of games in English, so it just may be more than wishful thinking on our parts. They told us (William was there too) that it was what they were hoping to do - eventually release UWOnline in English.

But see, this makes me cry just because I don't like MMORPGs. And I don't see this one being any different from your typical "grind until you achieve better skill and then grind some more" crud that you see in MMORPGs. I just wish they would do a single player UW again and add multiplayer that you don't have to pay for. I don't care if it's 2 DVDs and takes 10 gigs on my harddrive. I really don't. UW2 is one of the greatest games ever made (not the greatest though - please don't whip me), and I would love to see a sucessor for it.

No whips, Otaku, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> It was a great game, and a lot of fun, to my mind ranks up there with the original SMP as one of the biggest `time-stealers`, IMO... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> I mean, I STILL play it on the PC... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I've never played the PC version. I have played it on the PC, but on a SNES emulator. That way I don't have to dig out my SNES and cartridges from storage. Is the PC version any different? If all it does is have better graphics, then I can do without (unless of course it's full 3D, which I doubt <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> ). But if it adds extra stuff, I might have to look into getting a copy somehow.

I'm not sure of the differences, Otaku, but I'm getting a SNES cart (never had it on SNES before) very soon so I'll be able to compare. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Guess I could get off my lazy butt and just look the info up online. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />
