Sid's Pirate VS Uncharted Water

Akubi

Landlubber
Alright fellas, I want to express myself but I can find a better place and here for audiences. I am one of the Sid's Pirates fan as well. But my first game experience is not from the original Pirates but rather it's from Uncharted Water: New Horizon. Therefore uncharted water still give me a better impression of sea game gameplay.

Uncharted Water Goodies: (Trading Oriented)

You can sail around the world (Big Plus)
You have 6 characters to choose. (Each has it's own reason to go to sea)
You can explore and discover the Wonders, Artifacts, Animals and Culture.
You can command multiple ships is battle. (Turn Based)
Very large variety of trading items. Goods of Asia are unavailable in Europe.
You assist cities by investing the economy.
Stories oriented game so you can actually win in this game.

Pirates Goodies: (Piracy Oriented)
The duel is cinematic and fun to watch and play.
You can upgrade ships.
You can dance and marry with gov's daughter.
You can catch most wanted criminal.
You ACTUALLY really find the treasures and lost cities.
You assist cities by escorting immigrants and cargo ships.
You can attack cities.
You can interact with Pirates and other settlers.
It's opened ended game so you can play forever.

Both Goodies:
Good number of items to purchase and Ships variety.

What I can imply from the list is that Sid's Pirate missed the essential elements of sea games like in Uncharted Water. But on the positive side, Sid's pirate make sea games with little details which make it looks good.

After playing Sid's Pirate, I hope what I played is actually sometime like Uncharted Water. I want to go around the world and visit many settlers and experience different style and culture. Sail around Brazil and through Pacific Ocean and reach Japan. Go to the tavern and have tea instead of beer. The sail to China and pick up some chinese chicks, then sail to India and grab some spice. Sail through the storm via Madagascar and get to Istambul for carpet. Then back to the Carribean. Or may be just stay at your home nation and fool around there.

Thanks for listening.

Hmm...and what all of this has to do with piracy, dare I ask? Sounds like some traveller sim.

For those of you unfamiliar with Uncharted Waters 2. It is from Koei in japan but they made an english translation same company who did romance of the 3 kingdoms, nobunaga. its dos game made in 1994 I believe.

You choose one of 6 characters to start out with different nationalities in Europe England, Portugal, Italy (Genoa), Turkey, Netherlands and I'm missing one, and are granted a latter of marque from that nation. The time period is around the age of discovery 1500s?

there are ports scattered throughout the world, attack ships, you can explore the ports, explore unknown areas (hence uncharted waters), buy goods to trade, there are guilds to sign up with for mission, and a great story that eventually ties all these disparate characters together. The pirates remake does feel like UW2 to me too, as I mentioned in the other post. You get promoted in rank, you are sponsored by a nation, there are different ships, upgrades, magical items etc. `Visuals-wise`, it is no comparison to the pirates remake, being just 2D `sprite-based`. But the gameplay is amazing, I highly encourage everyone to try it if they can find a copy (please don't PM me though I don't have it anymore I don't think).

That's right.

New Horizons is not so focused on combat nor plundering, but the option remains available, nevertheless. You can't attack towns, though. If you own the PC game but it doesn't work, you can download the SNES rom and play it with an emulator.

Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons is awesome. It rivals, if not beats, any Pirates! game to some degree.

The one you missed is Spain I suppose. Catalina the Pirate will come and get you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

I truly enjoyed UW - played the original on the first Nintendo system, got the PC game to play UWNH which is UW2.

KOEI has made many subsequent versions of this wonderful game, but not, unfortunately, in English (or any other language other than Japanese, I believe). However they ARE coming out with a `UW-MMORPG` which is I think the 6th incarnation of UW - and plans to make it in English are in the works.

I'm not into online gaming, so I'm a *mite* disappointed in this - however when I was at E3 this year I did get a chance to see a preview of it - and I have to say it was pretty impressive in appearance. I asked, and they told me that you STILL will be able to sail around the world in the `UW-MMORPG`... Imagine that many ports in a MMORPG! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

UW2

I played UW2 as well, in fact I played through the game many many times.
I still prefer UW2, I loved the story, and sailling around the world.
UW2 is not only about pirates, in the game u can choose a pirate character or a Naval officer or even a trader.
Of course I am not saying I dont like Sid's Pirates2, I just think to able to sail around the world is a much more interesting.
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

I still play BOTH UW and UWNH today... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Uncharted Waters 3: Costa Del Sol, Uncharted Waters 4: Porto Estado, and Uncharted Waters: Gaiden, are all cross platform for PC and Playstation, (actually it looks like Gaiden is Playstation only) and available in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. I would kill to get my hands on any one of them, so that I could try my hands at a translation hack.

I still have many many wonderful memories about UW2, I felt like I actually travelled a huge distance to visit different worlds, it was the building style, the music, the ships, the swords, the events and etc, consider the graphix technology back then the designers of UW2 had really done an amazing job. You really cant compare the gameplay because UW has it all!! LOL <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
now my favourite pirate game is POTC, good news on the upcoming "age of pirates" , OH YEAH BABY! YEAH <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Six or seven years ago I saw UW Gaiden on the game shelf without even realized that is one of the UW series. The tittle was in chinese and I don't know chinese. But the cover is really catchy so I took a look at the screenshots provided on the box. Somehow the screenshots are familiar but I didn't suspect that is UW. Now this game is an artifact. It's incredibly difficult to find. Maybe I have to put up a notice for all pirates to hunt this "treasure". Reward ... promotion to Captain rank in this forum perhaps?

Koei they made a mistake doing an English version of UW MMORPG, I dont think it will sell very well worldwide, there are so many MMORPG nowdays, a MMORPG is only good when lots of people play it, what we need is a solid and `open-ended` traditional RPG game with modern grahpical and sound technology.

Well, on the bright side, if the game completly bombs, (how can it not?) there is a chance of it becoming abandonware, and fans will be able to put up their own free servers. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> It happened to Microsofts Allegience, so I can dream <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

<b>Captain Yellowbeard, </b>you might try searching those titles on eBay, sometimes they come up! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I just wish instead of an MMORPG, they would have went with a regular RPG. Or even possibly something like Phantasy Star Online where you can play it offline or online. Everybody seems to eager to jump onto the MMORPG bandwagon these days and it plain sucks. I'm not into MMORPGs.

UW2 remains my favorite game of all time to date. I spent so many sleepless nights playing that game only to find myself itching for more and more as time went on. One of the aspects I loved about the game was if you knocked any of the big bad pirates down a few notches, you could pull into the closest harbor and sometimes find them sitting around available for recruitment.

Eiden! Spit out that puppy and join my crew! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

Did KOEI underestimate the popularity of UW in America and Europe countries? Afterall the game is about those countries, so they should make english version for all of the series. How could they just overlook this point?

Till this time, UW only known by gamers in their twenties. THis is cause by a discountinous series of english version since New horizon. Most of us appreciate this game while we were 10 years old. After another 10 years, here we are, all reach twenties, some work, some got married. Devoted gamers probably already retired from gaming.

KOEI should make Uncharted Water that can be played single player or multiplayer. This will give the few to those who are new to uncharted water. That will cover a lot of fan tastes.

It's not just UW2, Koei made the decision to get out of the english PC sim business awhile ago, maybe shortly after UW2 was released . According to what I read, they are an independent studio and did not have the resources to make or market english versions, their standing in asian countries is very different their games are on considered as famous and mainstream as civ or simcity to us so it is considerably more lucrative for them to make korean or chinese versions. Also since the games were/are in C with their proprietary engine, it would hard to make fansubs as you would need the source and then `re-compile` it.

Now that all the games in the US and Europe now are financed by big distributors like EA and Infogrammes, Vivendi etc, somehow, koei didn't get picked up in those deals (probably because of exclusivity clauses from their console stuff most of which are available in english such as dynasty fighters etc). And afaik there aren't any big PC Game distributors in Japan I don't think PC gaming is as big over there as console. Home PC adoption was/is much slower than in the West, again because of the popularity of consoles. So we are caught between a rock and a hard place in order to get any english versions. I guess this is part of the "Big in Japan" alternate universe syndrome (pun intended on Mr. Big the band).

The name of their lead game designer is Kou Shibusawa (although he didn't make Uncharted waters). The `a-m`-`a-z`-`i-n`-g japanese "`easy-listening`" soundtrack was from anime musician Yoko Kanno, with midi sounding this good who needs MP3 .

UW3, and 4 still looks somewhat 2D. BUT the new UW Online whoa.
Just poking around on their official site in Japanese wow the in game screens look great, looks a lot like pirates but better <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
<a href="http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/dol/topics/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/dol/topics/index.htm</a>
Go to the 3rd link under game guide.
In the linked page, the 4 tabs say "entering the port", "adventurer setup", "trader setup" and soldier setup" respectively. (man I should work for koei). just click the forward button to advance to the next screen.

I echo the sentiments of the other posters, looks great, would probably do well as as standalone over time but I doubt it has the kind of exposure/fan base to become a MUD which needs a big subscription base, also having pay $20 a month to play a game is way too rich for my blood.

BTW, the title Daikoukai Jidai means "big seafaring times". look at it this way, it's a nice incentive to learn another language (in order to play the game!) and impress your friends. Incidentally if you do live in Japan, Koei needs your help to bring Uncharted Waters to the Anglophone world
<a href="http://www.koei.co.jp/english/html/joboffer/g.html" target="_blank">http://www.koei.co.jp/english/html/joboffer/g.html</a>

Oh and all your base is belong to us.

They do indeed need some help, I briefly read the page that offers a job and I spotted 2 errors just like that. Man, I would hate to have to translate stuff. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> Also, I am assuming thats 1000 yen an hour? Which is how much USD $.. anyone??

What, $10 an hour to live in Japan, you gotta be crazy. Have you ever been to Japan? I have! In my opinion you cannot get along on $10 an hour... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" /> Not to mention it would be a substantial pay cut for me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
