# of montalban's mercenaries, spoiler so watch it!

OK.

So, I'm playing at Rogue level, right, and I kicked Montalbans' arse a coupla o' times <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> , right, and I found 2 pieces o' his map, right, and I figured out where his hideout is with only these 2 pieces, right, so i took a couple of my boys to go and find it...

... and ended up fighting 12 goddamn units of Indians! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> I had a royal sloop with 170 crewmembers and when the fight started I had 1 officers, 2 pirates and 1 buccaneers.

I managed to whack off about 7 or 8 indian units using some uncanny guerilla warfare, higher ground, woods, used all my military and tactical knowledge and yelled at the computer and banged me fist on da table and the lot..., but still got my arse kicked. Which is normal, considering the odds I had.

So, figuring that I killed more than half of the heathen bastards, i went immediately on another expedition to catch them `off-guard` and mop up the brown fuc*ers... and the same thing happened again!

Except:

a) I had fewer troops.
B) I swear that there were more little indians this time.

Question: how many of them are there, goddamn it!!! I cant see no numbers of enemy soldiers, but i'm figuring around `400-500` indians.

Question #2: How many troops did you have when you went to kick indian arse?

P.S. I have nothing against indians except in the game, please don't think of these as racist remarks, since they're not. If I had that option, I'd cruise the carribean and loot and sack cities and give 'em all to the pirates and the Indians.

Go.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I've usually had about 6 groups of indians with 50 men a piece (my theory is that the number of men you have in each of your groups is equal to the number of men in enemy groups). That's on Adventurer.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember for sure how many enemies I had on my latest game (my first one on Rogue). I think it was about the same.

12 sounds a lot!

I saw 10 indian units and while it was their turn there were units moving around which I couldn't see.

I also realized that indian units don't have a penalty to their movement through forests. Is it so? I think they can move 2 spaces even through the jungle...

How many pirates did you have when you beat the indians?

Yeah, I had a similar experience on rogue level--they just outnumber you hugely no matter what. My solution was to take about 150 men in, then draw most of the natives up a hill with my bucaneers and pirates on top while sneaking my officers off around one side and up to the gate (they had to fight 2 groups of natives, but managed to make it)

Makin' de AI split thar forces be a key strategy! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Yup, splitting the enemy force is a strategy I often use, when I'm up against superior odds.

I form up a main line of defence with my buccaneers, protected by pirates, while my officers and perhaps another pirate unit run sideways towards the other side of the screen, making sure that they are being followed by at least some of the enemies. Then, when the buccaneers have finished with one half of the enemies, I lead the rest of them back to them...

Nothing beats a good cannon by your side........now if only they kept them in the game <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I usually try to use the high ground/cover, and split my forces. Since the terrain changes every time you "`re-do`" a battle, I'm glad they let me choose my own ground. However I HATE it that not all of the enemy troops are shown at the beginning of the battle - mid battle, some troops suddenly appear out of nowhere... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

At Rogue when I battled the troops (natives) around Montalban's hideout, I was as surprised to find that even tho I had around 150 of my own men, I was still outnumbered. I bumped up to a little over 200 and went back and neatly defeated the enemy... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I find the battle with Montalban's indians the easiest in the game. Your units' specialties are superior to theirs (ex. buccaneers are better long range than archers), and the only thing they can do that you can't is move two spaces in trees.

If you find the going getting tough and you're about to lose, do what I did the first time I sacked Panama- have one unit run like hell towards the main gate. Although I have never been in that situation, I'm pretty sure the fight with Montalban will be triggered if this happens.

Yes, the Locals know the terrain, so they can move through the jungle without penalty.
The magic nimber seems to be 200 for me. According to something I read, the Indians are supposed to have a low morale, but I haven't noticed that at all. I have problems telling which are archers and which are Axmen, too. AND, BTW, the book says that Indians (when fighting cities) can appear and fight for us or against us. Has anyone had Indians fight FOR them?

No, I think Sid made a lot of `last-minute` adjustments to land battles, as they haven't fought for me at all. I say let the other guys have 'em though.

To tell the difference between Scouts and Archers just move your mouse real close to them. The archers should have the longer and wider black stick.

Ummm, run to the gate? Is it possible to sack a town simply by reaching the gate? I thought about but didnt think it was an in game option...

I feel stupid <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Yes, that's the reason for splitting off your men - if you can run a "quarterback sneak" around your enemy and get to the gate you can sack the town! However this may NOT give you the option to install a governor, if that's what you want - you may need to initiate another land battle to knock out a few more enemy troops before that can happen.

The manual mentions that the enemy can have artillery among their units, but I have never seen any. Has anyone seen artillery in the enemy armies. or was that taken out of the final release?

I think I had around 200 troops too when I beat Montalban the first time, however, the first time I found his hideout I discovered he had an army, right before it beat me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

The artillery was pulled from the final release, but according to the beta testers, we're missing nothing.

i saw artillery once...
also the graph is ingame so i guess it is as rare as the ship of the line.
also when i fought montalban he had 2 scouts 1 axeman and 1 archer.
i beat him fast. i guess the merc number is random.

Whar did ye see artilery mate, I've never seen it as I thought it was pulled from de game <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
