Ged's Icons Lair

Nice batch of icons ye've done there Bart. Really looking forward to seeing the mature and get put in-game now. Hope you don't mind if I borrow some of your graphics for use in my work for AOP as well.

Cap'n Drow

sure Cap'n_Drow, fill ya keg <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I've put the complete blank grid for Icons on the ftp. Its in three flavours: as a .tga, a .jpg and a .psd(for photoshop) - in terms of AoP i'm not sure how it handles it icons, so the grid may need adjusting?

Once i've got my files from my 'work' pc i'll put a load of resources that people can play with to create icons: Binoculars/More Doctors kits/sundials/barometers/scales etc.

EDIT: ok i put a bunch or pics on the ftp for people to play with - the task to create better Icons than my novice attempts(although i was pleased with the Doctors case+compass) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

sure, no questions, your icons are nice. i just thought theres some room for minor improvement. just my 2 cents.
here for instance
<img src="http://www.twofinger.at.tc/surgeon.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

you can see the mentioned outline and shadow, that most of the stock items have.
and a colorscheme a little opposing to the background.

btw
and you made a mistake with the empty icon sheet... the blue shade is upside down for some squares. darker blue at the top of the image is for stock items i believe.
it would look strange if you browsed the traders stuff, and all of a sudden the background of an item looks flipped <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
edit: i just noticed this doesnt seem to be your fault. someone else introduced it as it seems.. as the original item sheet has this mixed up backgrounds already...actually it was my fault for pointing you to a somewhat messed up sheet <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> items8.tga.tx is better.

sure, i can work around that, but i just thought i told you, so you dont end up producing items with mixed backgrounds.

Hm... What those icons need I believe are some drop shadows under the items. This would integrate them better with the background.

yeah, just what i said. and did.
look at the surgeon kit with the green cushions in the post above you... thats not enough?
outline AND shadow? does it need more?

I think that is more than adequate for the game imho. Nice Doctors kit ged - thats my origonal blue one isnt it(going by the tools and how they are laid out) - so you just tweaked the colour saturations to make it green right? Looks pretty dandy.

The trick will be if you look at some other different examples i put on the ftp - to try to make some look 'better quality' than others - i think this may be quite hard with the doctors cases, but thats un un-informed ps opinion <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

With metal objects you can just increase the shine or gold depth(as my over egged effort with the microscope shows) to create that instant quality recognition. by the way one of the short pistol 'qualities' is wrong in the current game i think - i think its the 'worn short pistol'? its actualy as shiny as the fine version to my eyes - definately more shiny than the 'average short pistol' graphic?

Thanks for the info on the better items8.tga.tx - i'll get that emptied and eplace the current files on the ftp <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

he he - i was looking at 'surveyors' equipement today, and old box cameras and thinking about the binos - shame we dont have many animals in the game, it would be quite cool to create an 'naturalist' officer class to further the cause of science......nice dream anyway <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

yes that was the blue kit. i didnt use "hue and saturation" though, because it adjusts all pixels, if i dont select the cushion. which would be tedious.

i rather used "selective colour correction" and adjusted the levels for the blue tones.

another thing i used, before starting the work was a filter to make the image look more "comic" style, and not as like a photograph. but i really dont know how its called in english... if i had to translate it directly it was the "Corneffect". i couldnt believe its called that way in english <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

plus you dont really notice anything of it in the small picture anyway.

ok good tips on the 'selective colour correction' thing - i'll have a play. And xD at "Corneffect" - still it might just be the same in english version(i can see what that filter would do in my mind - kind of gives it a farmers touch <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> ) - i'll look out for it.

Oh and your icons are much better than mine - i'm just getting the hang of PS really. Still if i can make some crude ones to stimulate peoples imagination - then i'm happy.

I like magic wand tool for taking objects out of composite, but wish i could easily 'invert'(?) the selection - like select an area as usual but when doing cut/paste it would move everything BUT the selected area. Often its easier/cleaner to select the background(you can make it all one colour easily enough) of an image with the tool, but i dont really want the background - i'm after the item in the pic.
I've been going through my manual - as i'm sure it must be possible, but havent found the trick yet - its not with the shift/alt/ctrl key options that i can see? weird.

My apologies - I was referring to the earlier icons. Your icon is precisely what I have in minds <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The filter might be called "grain" in English? Not sure, but that is a name for a filter I think and it does mean something similar to "corn" in Dutch. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

and english! corn/wheat/barley are all 'grains'(but then you have a woods grain which isnt what we want exactly, although its kinda in the ball park) - so that must be the one - language is fun no?<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And Hey! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> at kazeite - 'icon nazi', I was doing my best! darn it! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

minds? do you have an alter ego? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

oh yeah, that is exactly the way how to do it very often. you select the background, and then invert selection.
i dont know whats the hotkey for it, since all the ctrl/shift/alt keys turn your magic wand into "add to" "substract from" or "cross select". and ctrl + i just inverts the colors.

the way I invert my selections is:
select anything using any selection tool (magic wand for instance) then, while still having ANY selection tool as cursor, rightclick INTO the selected area. then go for "invert selection" TADAAAA <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

to pieter:
yeah, grain is exactly what i was looking for - i think.
at least its the word you use to refer to-- lets say, the different ways, film material displays color.
so movies from the 70ties have a different grain then nowadays movies.
and i think, thats what the filter is called.

I recall there were some more icons in this thread. One of a clock/watch and one of a sextant. Does anyone still have those? I was thinking of adding them in the game.

I think the following icons might come in handy: A compass that doesn't point North (Jack's Compass) and a watch/clock. Could anyone make such an icon?

i recall another instument used in navigation, but i don't know the name of it. it was a kind of clock used on ships, but not like a normal clock. it's not a barometer.

Jack's Compass: Maximus is working on adding an Isla de Muerte to the game, so it might be usefull to have a compass that points to Isla de Muerte, otherwise you can't find it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

Watch/clock: This should be an equippable item. When equipped, the clock display will appear on the screen.

interesting. by the way: the anyone ever find an ammunition <b>bag</b> or a barrel? i never did. only a pouch and a flask.
