Game Length

<!--`QuoteBegin-zac999`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(zac999)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->There needs to be an aging part.  Lets me give you an example, lets say that you have built up a huge fleet after playing for a week.  This fleet could take anything, so you have no challenge.  That is what the game is about the challenge.  If they allowed you to build up this massive fleet you would just be able to run over everything.  By having an aging character you create a system that would limit the ability to become the all powerful pirate.  The age limits the player from creating the uber fleet.  There will always be something that is too strong for you, something that you couldn’t take in the last game.  So you play again and try to beat it.  Then you will see something else and try that.  This will allow the game to be replayed over and over again. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />[/quote]

I agree..

This is something i miss in the original.

It is to easy to build up a strong fleet that goesover everything. Usually you inthe beginnning goes to the tavern and you can be oered hundredsomen.I hope they willmake it more difficult in this PC version.

Should also mention that pirate morale affects this too. You can't sail forever; your pirate crew starts to itch and wants to get off the boat and get their share of the loot. The longer you sail and build up your strength, the more treasure you have to take in, or else the worse your morale gets (and then your crew starts to desert you, and it's harder to recruit more to take their place.) Eventually you must split the loot and start fresh, with nothing but your reputation intact. It's an excellent game balancing tool that I didn't fully appreciate until I had played the game for a while.

Thanks Jeff. More very useful info. Actually, more helpful than what some previews have to offer. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Looks like it's going to be like in the original Pirates! Game.
In the original it was also more difficult to keep up good morale the more men (and more Ships) you commanded. Simply because more men means less Gold for everyone, when you divide it. So with large Fleets you couldn't sail long without any action (and you must have a lot action to keep them happy). I liked that and I hope to see it in the new Pirates! again.

Say Jeff, didn't you play the original Pirates?

Personally I really don't want an endless game, but I would like to see more gameplay then `6-8` hours.

EDIT: in the old Pirates! I divided my plunder about three times per Career! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thanks for the info Jeff. I remeber the old days too. I would always get this massive fleet and everyone would want to leave. I didn't understand that, I was only 8. The new informationg given makes pirates a game I will be replaying for years. There is always that last amount of gold over the horizon. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

thnx Jeff <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> . Say, can you tell us ,can we adapt game lenght to our needs, if some one wont to play more then `6-8` h? (yust a little more <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> )

True, you would image they would include a few of them

Yes, that is excellent game design. On the other hand, how can you balance 1 second=1 day when a ship of the time crossed the caribbean in two weeks? (15 seconds). It will go with absurd speed in the game map!
You see, if for every second of game time (in the navigation map) our character is a day older, we definitely cannot take our time to analyse a given situation, to play at a more slowly pace. I do not defend an option of unlimited time but the rate that the time passes while navigating is far too quick.

Hi Guys, I have been reading through all of the forums, like ATP and Cutlassisle, and everyone seems to be disappointed about the game length. I think it would be best to have about 3 options, and, short medium and long, and then almost everyone would be pleased. I think that everyone is overreacting a bit, and some guys at ATP dont want to get the game any more because of it. I am sure that the beta testers will pick up on this, and it cant be too hard to add into the game. Besides, the gamebryo engine is very moddable, and they will be able to mod the game length easily. I am sure that there will also be cheats to stop the aging and game speed. I have faith in Sid Meier, and I dont believe he would release a game which wont appeal to the original fans. Well done to all the beta testers, hope you give some good feedback and enjoy it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

First, as far as I know, the gamebryo has nothing to do with gameplay, just the 3D graphics. So much for trusting the gamebryo regarding modability of gameplay...
Second, the childish graphics seem a poor choice for a game of this type (but this nonsense will be modded easily).
Third, at least for me, worse than game lenght, is the way the ship move about on steroids, traveling around the Caribbean faster than Ben Johnson running the 100m...
Fourth, even worse, ship to ship combat seems to be to much reflexes and too few strategy. The ships turn around in half a second, at least judging from the movies available. It all seems a Donald Duck movie!
Add to this that if you add sailors and crates falling in the sea to be picked like powerups, except for the name, you don't have a game that remotly resembles Pirates!, but instead a watered down version that tries to catter for "all the family", but pleases none!

Finally, I fully agree with you the quality of this game rests in the shoulders of the Beta Testers (not the comercial success because the market guys can sell anything with Sid Meyer on the box, of course!).

It's the first time I've done a beta test (aside from the PMT Build 11 mod for PotC), so I'm finding this whole experience very interesting!

I have done it for a couple of games before... It was a very pleasant experience. And having the honor of reading my name on capitals in the mainscreen (the betas were all personalized) was fantastic!

Good luck for the beta, and congrats for the work on POTC! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
