Game Length

Well, it would be nice to get an official on the ability to change the game length as it was a rather lopsided poll on the main site with the `6-8` hours only getting 9 votes.

What say everyone else on this? Id like to change it to suit myself or the game i wanted to play at the time the idea that im on a time limit spoils the fun a bit to me i feel like i have to rush everywhere

Jeff can we get some idea wether it will be possible to change?

I still think that if you will have no other option than play the `6-8` hours career the game will loose at least 75% of its value... I just cant see it being fun to start a new career each time you play.

I think there atleast should be three alternatives.

1) Short game `6-8` hours
2) long game 96 hours
3) unlimited length

personally I would play the unlimited game length.

as you say.

I dont wanna rush anywhere which obviously will be the result if there will be an `6-8` hours gamelength.....

what was the results of the poll???

when I checked it out
5% wanted the `6-8` hours career
10% wanted a days lasting career
30% wanted moddable length of the career
55% wanted unlimited length

I think would much rather it be the shorter `6-8` hour game. It gives it more strategy as to what missions/approach you are going to take. You can't try to marry the governor's daughter, find 5 lost family members, hunt down every notorious pirate, attack the silver train, find every buried treasure all in a lifetime. That just wouldn't be realistic. Sailing across the Caribbean takes time.

I think part of the desire to play long, long games is the love people have for Pirates! and they want to play it for as long as they can. I trust what Sid and the other developers are doing and will reserve judgement on the game being too short/just right/too long until I've played the game.

I think unlimited would be silly and unrealistic. But 6 - 8 sounds really short. I mean I can sit down on a weekend and play for 6 hours straight and not even realise. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I think maybe 20 - 30 hours would be better that's about average for most fps games these days and they seem to take a long time. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate_plain.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p3" border="0" alt="pirate_plain.gif" />

I think they should keep it like the original. By allowing people to change their game lengths to suit them, it would change the game dynamics too much IMHO.

I've never mentioned it before, but I'll say it now. I think that the most we will see of gameplay is *at the most* `10-15` hrs...

`6-8` hours would only last one day. Having to start a new character everyday would get really boring very quickly.

it didn't with the original - though it could last a bit longer than that sometimes, though not by much. I still play the original. Arrr! I am so pumped!

better paint the house or sumthun...you have 2.5 months to wait <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

but let me stay on topic. did i miss something? is the `6-8` hours pure speculation by the majority on this forum or did it come as a fact from fraxis that `6-8` hours would be the typical "life" of your character?

To my knowledge, there has been no official word on game length. However, I think it is the concensus of board members (at least those familiar with the original) that the game will be somewhere btwn the `8-15` hours per career. Don't want to speak for anyone though.

Personally, I don't think they will allow you to adjust it. One easy way to adjust the old one was to crank up the difficulty level. It was much harder to have a long career at the higher levels. I played most of my stuff at the Journeyman level (2nd highest out of 4 I think).

When is the 'time' and 'aging process' on?

Is it on only when you sail?

is it on when you are in the towns?

when you read menus?

checking info?

etc

btw. I played the original this weeken. I played for three hours and my character aged three two years during that time.

The aging process can speed up if you divide your loot frequently during a career. After dividing the loot and splitting the crew up, the game advances a few months before you can recruit another crew again. Same thing if you get captured and put in jail.

Sailing across the caribbean took weeks at most, and you could do all that in one life time, you could do that in 20 years. Well maybe not every notorious pirate, but only the ones that are competiton <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Besides, they said this game was based on fun, and not realism. I think aging = realistic and not fun. If I age then I demand gore! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I agree...

The reason for that so many of today games are so incredible boooooring is because they make them realistic instead of fun.....

as long as it is fun it doesnt matter if it isnt realistic...

If they would make Pirates totally realistic noone would like to play it... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

There needs to be an aging part. Lets me give you an example, lets say that you have built up a huge fleet after playing for a week. This fleet could take anything, so you have no challenge. That is what the game is about the challenge. If they allowed you to build up this massive fleet you would just be able to run over everything. By having an aging character you create a system that would limit the ability to become the all powerful pirate. The age limits the player from creating the uber fleet. There will always be something that is too strong for you, something that you couldn’t take in the last game. So you play again and try to beat it. Then you will see something else and try that. This will allow the game to be replayed over and over again. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
