English, French and Spanish officers

Jack Davidson

Musing Mariner
Storm Modder
To all you naval enthusiasts out there, and I know there are a few.....

Examples of the latest in military uniforms have arrived from Europe and are beginning to make their appearance in the Caribbean colonies. They're a bit ahead of the times, but as it would seem, times and fashions are always changing. They may not suit everyones tastes, but for those of you who wish to make the greatest of impressions with your superiors, either on the quarter deck or in the Governor's ball room, then these fine uniforms may be found only at selected tailor shops. Oh, yes, and they tend to be slightly pricier than the local product.

Basically, this is a renovation of JMV's old Military Skin's mod which was incomplete and also incompatible with the latest Build. I've recoded most of it and created code which was missing for some of the officers. JMV's skin's remain the same.

So far it's just the officers. They've been rank coded and are only available at Redmond, Isla Muelle and FdF tailor shops upon being promoted to the necessary rank. I've tested in game(my current version of Post Build is 05/03/06) and have found no problems so far. I'll tweak it a little more and then get it up on the ftp.

The next step will be to get the new soldier skins going. There's a little more to do for those than the officers but hopefully I'll have it sorted this week.

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

p.s. A question to all the modders out there. I've noticed now and in the past that the last character model listed on initModels C is for some reason not available for sale at the tailors shops. It's currently happening with my trial of this mod and I've noticed it in the past when other skins have been added. Pre this mod, the last character model listed is the Maturinesque naturalist with the black coat and I've never been able to purchase that skin from a tailor. Now that I've added new models, the black coat naturalist has become available, however the new last officer model can't be purchased where it should be, and believe me I've tried exhaustively. Does anyone know why this is so and can it be fixed?

I've got a temporary fix for this which is to create a duplicate last character model. This seems to work, however it creates a duplicate portrait on the change clothes interface. I'm thinking if I remove the FaceId from the duplicate last character model this will remove the duplicate portrait and hopefully work. This will of course only remain a temporary fix so I'm hoping somebody has some thoughts on this and maybe a fix based on the coding for the Tailor shops.

Woo nice stuff!

Quick question you might know the answer to, any idea how easy/difficult would be it be to edit the colours of the uniforms to make them fit the 1690 era rather than the Napoleonic period JMV made them from? I've been wondering today whether it's possible to change the french soldiers uniforms to marines like this:
<img src="http://perso.wanadoo.fr/huchehault/image89.gif" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

and what would be needed to do it. Napoleon stuff is fine, but not contemporary with much of the game as it stands.

This is great, Jack Davidson! I'm sure many people will be VERY happy with this. And it saves me the work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I don't know why you experiencing that problem. Must be one of the craziest bugs I ever heard of. Something is wrong with the tailor's shops; that much is certain. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

More screenies...

[attachmentid=373]

and for the Spanish....

[attachmentid=371]

and the French....

Yeah, these new JMV skins are of course all very Napoleonic. The Royal Navy didn't even have a standard uniform until 1748. There's more soldiers on the way including French, however they too are very Napoleonic and I haven't sharpened my texturing skills enough yet, nor do I have the time at the moment to try recolouring them. I hope to do so sometime in the near future, though.

I know others have made some soldier retextures (see Pieters Pirate Page, List of Character Models) haver it would seem that those modders and mods aren't around anymore.

I'll copy that photo and play around with some textures sometime. I'll also scan around for reference material for late 17th Century military uniforms.

Thank's Pieter.

I know you mentioned sorting this one out a while back, so I'm happy to lighten your load a bit. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

BTW Is that Derringer Skinpack still available anywhere? Couple of good skins in that one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Great work, those guys command respect <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I don't think those skinpacks are available on the internet anywhere anymore, but I've got them on my computer, so I can put them on the FTP tomorrow if you want them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

nice soldiers!, gonna be added to postbuild? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Absolutely superb! Just what I was looking for!

Great work, mate! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

That'd be great thanks, Pieter.

I don't know about using them all but there's a couple of good ones there that I like so I wouldn't mind playing around with them a bit... make them compatible. That is of course if Deringer allows it.

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I don't know if Deringer is still available, but I would think he'd be happy to see his work used. I am going to upload the Deringer skinpack right now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The file is uploaded now as "Deringer skin modification.rar" or something like that.

YYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!
i'm REALLY looking forward to using these skins!
as well as anything else you have hidden up your sleave <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Aye aye! Hey Lord Nelson... EMPTY YOUR PM FOLDERS! I CAN'T SEND YOU ANY MAIL!!! lol. Remember to empty it every week. It is vital that we are able to speak with one another.

Thanks Pieter,

I'll grab them and have a look. I'm sure there's something there that we can use.

RE: 1690s.

From looking around online, I suspect that trying to make the navies and soldiers all consistent with the 1690s would actually be quite hard. Partly because their is little information available on uniforms of the period where they existed, and partly because it isn't always clear what units were in the caribbean theatre. The French stuff I posted (I have more pictures too) seem to be correct as the 'Compagnies Franches de la marine' were units created specifically to guard the French colonial possessions in the Indies and New France. As for naval uniforms...can't tell really. Not finding any information about whether the french navy at this time had a uniform as such.

You correctly stated that it was post-1748 that the British Navy adopted uniforms. I suspect that any attempt to have officer skins for British navy c.1690 would be something like Man6_1 or the Corsair models but with no hats and periwigs (there are accounts of pirates deliberately stealing periwigs from merchants and navy personnel). For the ordinary soldiers...I've not as yet seen anything about marines as such or whether they had a uniform. I'd imagine however it is probably just red justaucorps over white breeches and stockings.

I don't myself know how to play with these things to mod existing models (where recolouring/retexturing is a viable option), but I'm certainly not above trying if I have the resources and know-how to do so (I'm certainly pedantic enough). Perhaps forum members of the relevant nations might have more luck in investigating their nations military units...or at the very least making sense of webpages this poor brit can't decipher (and that google's machine translator renders nonsensical).

As I mentioned elsewhere, I question the 1690 time setting for the game, however we can leave that debate for that thread.

I've actually been looking around for colonial land forces uniforms and have found a couple things of interest. I'd be interested to see more of your pictures re the 'Compagnies Franches de la marine'. JMV's French soldier skins that I'm working on at the moment have a decidedly regular infantry look to them (I'd welcome anyones thoughts on the type of unit that the French land officer would be with), however I'm also working with the Deringer Skinpack provided by Pieter, and this has a French uniform scheme which better suits our colonial needs. This new French uniform maybe a little more appropriate, no matter what the date.

Thanks for your thoughts, Cpt Fabris. Hopefully we can find some good solutions. Your description, 'Compagnies Franches de la marine', is something I can use for getting the "new" new French uniforms in game.

Cheers, matey <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
