Companion never know how to sail away

What is happening? The AI in PoTC used to be very smart.

Any tips? very frustrating, i want to collect manowars in ascold quest, i boarded 3 and asked them to sail away, but they keep turning and doing nothing.

What does AI think when sailing away? Do they sail inland or outland? I try to make sure their bow is turning away from the enemy but everytime i asked them to sail away, they put half sail and turn a bit into enemy group. I put top class captain with 100 Navigation still the same.
 
Actually this needs modding. Under "sail away" they are programmed to go with the wind no matter this course usually leads them in the middle of enemy squadron:-(
 
I've seen some of mine go straight into land and keep bumping off the shore until finally blowing up from either crashing into land or a nearby enemy pumps some broadsides into them.

When I want to run away I just tell the AI to defend me, it's generally good about following me, far enough away I tell it to sail away and I load chain shot for any chasers.

EDIT:
It would be nice if you could tell the AI you want the enemy's ship relatively intact for capture. So it will sail up and start broadsiding with chain/grape. I've lost several good trade ships I could sell at port because of the Battleship I generally keep with me broadsides the enemy at point blank while I deal with the military escort.

That'll be down to officers loyalty, it happened to me once when i gave my officer a MOW and told him to sail away which he did happily enough, i never heard from him again though.

I've noticed if you tell ships to sail away the enemy ships will try to follow it/them and won't stop till they are destroyed so its best to tell any ships you have to defend you and sail away, they will follow you and fire at any enemy ships that are in range, the sail away feature does however need fixing and hopefully when build 14 for POTC is finished work will start on COAS and fixes for such problems like sail away are found and released.
