Captain Python's P! 2 Thread (Former: I'm not buying this!)

I think we should all remember that his is more than probably just a first (in this millenia) of a series of Pirates! games from our friend Sid. I can't see him creating something entirely new at his age (how old is he now, anyway?) and he can't continue relying on Civilization. I think he NEEDS Pirates! (just like us) to stay in the business, and now that the remake is out, he can just expand on that one.

At least, that's how I'm seeing things. Or hoping. Definately hoping. There's so much more one could do with the Pirates! franchise.

It is amazing what path this thread is taking. In speaking of Civ 3, that game is ADICTIVE! That is the only game were each game is different. You want to talk about modding, there is so much modding to go with that in creating your own scenarios. If only they had a Pirate game like that.

So your saying Sids gotta eat, I mean come on, we can't count on social security to take care of us in old age can we now? I can agree with that, I do also hope that there will be more Pirate! games helmed by him out in the near future.

I did buy this game, I don't have it yet. I am a fan from the old schoolish days. Not as way back as some of you. Some of you fell for Pirates! on the PC, well I'm 24 and my first exposure was to Pirates! on the Nintendo. Untill the battery in my well used copy of pirates for the NES died, I played the Yearg out of it. Yes many elements of this game are "repetative". But you can do so much. If you have any intrest in being a pirate, this game will give hours and hours, if not years of enjoyment. Some of the core skills and tasks are the same thing...capture ships, get gold, impress daughter....blah blah...but you can take differnt paths..try not being a pirate! Try to win strategic victorys for your country.

I also want to add, and I don't want to name names, but I think its in very very bad taste to use and also to tell every one you are useing a cracked version of this game.

Yeah its called Pirates! But do you have to be one to enjoy it? Gameing companys charge for games bc they need money to run and come up with NEW games....It's simple, and me being a business man myself, it hits home when people steal what you worked so hard on.

Oh yeah, I guess this is a `de-lurk` also, I've been reading this board for many months now...so hello all....I've been creeping around behind you and over your shoulders for awhile now and its good to be part of the community now.

Yearrg on!

DA doc

Well, I've been completely open about me downloading pirates because I'm going to buy it the minute it comes out. Not every country in the world have got it yet, see...

And, sure, you could say that there's no proof that I'd buy it either. But the I'd be really stupid to actually admit it, wouldn't I? Unless you think I'm doing some reverse psychology thingie, but would it really be worth it? In that case, I must have way too much time on my hands. Which I do really, cause I'm on welfare. Still, I'm buying the game, either you believe it or you don't. I don't care. I think. At least, I don't care at this very moment. Am I confusing? I'm confusing myself right about now, where am I?

Is that Long John Silver I'm seeing? Look behind you! A three headed monkey!

I couldn't read all the way through this yet, but ...

You CAN purchase ships in the game. It is all random as to how it happens though. Occasionally at the shipwrights you will be given the option of purchasing a ship.

Second, this was never meant to be formulated into some mass 3d world, walking your character around, dealing with all sorts of issues that span a few islands.... This was meant as a remake - retaining the same flavor the original Pirates! had.

I do believe it is well worth the purchase for you skeptics. I wish there was a playable demo at this time, but there isn't. You do have to believe in the certain quality this game has. It is in my opinion well worth the money.

I am reading more and more things on this game from this forum, and I am liking what I am hearing. I am thinking after Christmas, New Years, and my Birthday (in January), I will buy this game, when it should be a little less than $50, due to discounts and what not. But I got a question.
One of the details in this game that make it different from the rest is that peopel age. At what age do you become a captain? Also, after the 40s and mid 40s, if you can't do much in sword fighting, what is there to do?

It is good to hear you can buy a ship occasionally. I guess that it is more historically accurate to have to steal all of your ships, but having a fall back to buy a ship is good.

Here are some more questions:
-How's the Music?
-Can someone give me a simple plot line in what we have to do?
-Is this a "stick to the plot" game like SD, a "You don't have to stick to the plot" like POTBS, or is it total "Do what you want"?

I'll be back with some more questions later.

There is NO defined plot. It's totally open ended. You don't HAVE to follow any of the little `mini-quests` - like "Catch Mr. Faulkes for bribery - he's hiding in Cartegena, the barkeep there can help you."
There is some back story to your character that gives the game some added flavor but it's not linear like POTC was - it's a do what you want game... like CIV III in a sense. The idea is fame and fortune but there are many ways to skin that cat.

The ship buying is restricted to small war ships like a sloop, and only becomes an option when your only ship is a merchant ship - like a fluty or merchantman.

The music is fantastic. I catch myself humming some of the tunes long after I have turned the game off... which is not very often mind you.

Aging? Your character ages over time... which can mean your health declines somewhat and can eventually lead to poor health and less effectiveness in battle. I mean, the life of a Pirate ain't easy says I! But basically, once you are no longer effective (due to age/injuries) it might be time to retire and take a job as a sailing master, a fencing master or even "The Governor" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> At some point, you just have to retire. Can't live forever... just ask Ponce de Leon!

*L*O*V*E* the music! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Here's a good review to add to the mix.

I played Pirates! over the weekend and it's awesome. For those that liked the original, you'll like this version too. It's a great update with some tweaks and added features. Makes the package even more complete than before. Who would have thought that was possible of such a classic? Although I would have prefered more realistic looking graphics, the cartoony ones have grown on me. All the `mini-games` are great. The ship combat, the turn based ground battles on towns, fencing, and even dancing. The sneaking into town `mini-game` is ok, but afer doing it a few times it becomes tedious. For anyone looking for another game to play I highly recommend SM Pirates!.

I have changed the name of the thread to something more apropriate. Here are some more questions need answering:

-What Ships Types are there and are they accurate?
-I’ve heard the dancing is not that good. Can someone cover if it is good or not, what you have to do during it, and what the point of it is?
-More details on this “Splitting Plunder” Thing.
-Could someone cover crew and food?
-How are the guns doing?
-What’s this hammock stuff I am hearing about?
-I hear complaining on pistols, what’s the deal?
-What is the deal with owning land?

Everyday, I am more tempted to buy this game. I guess that I was mislead by a couple of bad comments that came up before the good ones when it just came out.

Hey! Is there a Prima's Official Strategy Guide or something coming anytime soon? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I have been SO BUSY with PotC modding stuff (chasing down bugfixes) that I haven't had a chance to load up my new copy of SMP! yet... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> But I can answer a couple of these things... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

The dancing is fun, a lot of your success in wooing the governor's daughters is in dancing well with her - you have to listen to the music and move on the downbeat - follow her hand signals as to what move you should make, and try to keep on the beat. It's a challenge - and if you do it well enough she will share secrets with you, or give you items, even tell you that you have a rival and he wants to duel you over her...

If you divide the plunder when you are holding a lot of money, your crew will be much more impressed with you, and you will be deemed successful. You may even be invited to "up" the difficulty level. On the other hand, if you divide the plunder when you don't have much money, you MIGHT be invited to decrease your difficulty level.

The cannons on the ships fire discernable shot - and you have to be careful to aim correctly - or your shot will not hit the ship you are aiming at. If you're both moving (which is typical) this can be difficult.

You can buy triple hammocks as an upgrade for your ships at some shipyards. This will increase your capacity for crew - and give you excellent fighting power should you decide to take on a ship larger than yours, or if you want to attack a town...

Lotta questions there Python.

Splitting the plunder is dividing the plunder... ya know, giving the crew their share of the loot and turning them loose of the population of a small town, and everything that entails. You have to do it from time to time or your crew gets mutinous. They like the fact that you are making them money, but they want to spend it see?

Crew and food? Well, you have to have food to feed your crew. You can buy it or steal it (I mean, "liberate" it). If you starve your men, they turn on you.

Triple hammocks is modifaction you have have done to a ship to allow it to carry more crew than is standard for that ship.

Dancing is fun once you get the hang of it. It's a cute little challenge. The ladies can give you anything from treasure maps to info on your long lost family. Well worth the time to get good at it.

You are granted land by governors who are pleased with your performance. Usually this happens when you are promoted. basically it gets added to your presonal wealth statistic. No real "game" function to it.

No complaints on pistols. If you have them, your pirate will fire a shot or two into his opponent prior to most swordfights. It's gives you a slight advantage.

Just go buy the game. It's a blast. And for someone who has posted 780 times in a "pirate" forum, it's kind of a moral imperitive if you ask me.

Well, sorry Rohbshop, the only way you wouldn't have known this was a remake is to have not paid attention to any gaming magazines for the last year, certainly not been as old as I was (to have played Pirates! Gold, or pretty much not even looked at the back of the gamebox for crying out loud. You want a quote--how's this from the back of the gamebox "Based on Sid Meir's original masterpiece, Pirates....".
Well, I agree with you that people buying a game don't necessarily know how it's going to play, your notion that people shouldn't have known this is a remake, is...well..a little mentally inflexible. Unless, of course, you're suggesting the consumer isn't even responsible for reading the gamebox.
May I suggest a breath of fresh air on deck and check your resources before you blast someone?
