Captain Python's P! 2 Thread (Former: I'm not buying this!)

Yarrr! mateys, dis forum is also supposed tew be fun as well, voic'n opinions is alright even if dey tend tew be negative, don't take de opinions personal, cause it'd not be werth it,I've played seadogs,POTC,an am now play'n Sid Meirs Pirates an enjoy all 3 O' dese games,it's all about personal tastes an not everyones tastes is gonna be de same,Dis jest be me humble opinion ,no offence intended to anyone,so if ye will excuse me mates,I'm gonna fire up Sid Meirs Pirates an continue wid me loot'n an plunder'n <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I don't know why you keep saying (Keith) all the time, so maybe I am mentally inflexible. All I know is that you don't buy a game without knowing anything about it, and it's only the consumers fault if you do. I just thought that was a very logical thing to do.

I wouldn't buy a soccer game without checking out the reviews or other peoples opinions on it. Anyone who bought Pirates! because he/she thought it was a strategy game only has himself to blame. Anyone who bought Pirates! because he/she thought it was an rpg only has himself to blame. Anyone who buys a game with Sid Meier stamped on only has himself to blame. If you expect something, and get another, you'll always wind up dissappointed.

Oh, and and don't call people names. You don't gain anything, but loss of respect from me when you do.

If one hasn´t played or seen someone actually playing the game yet, the best way to form an opinion about a game in general is reading reviews of game magazines. Up to now, there is only one I am aware of (whose editors truly played the release version) and that one gives the game a superb rating. It may be wrong to base ones opinion on a sole review, but I would not make the mistake to rely on a tiny minority of negative forum posts either. Personal preference is a very individual thing. And there are many people out there who are never satisfied with what they have and what they get.

Edit: Spelling.

hehe star eye, I edited his post (to tone it down), putting my name there is just to let him know who did it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Sorry to hear you are not buying this game, I think it is a really entertaining game, and was well worth the money. No, I don't say it's historically accurate. BUT it is very entertaining on the short term (Dunno about `long-term` yet - got it yesterday, slept 3 hours and I'm back gaming, I just can't get enough! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />) I think it is worth the money I payed for it. It has problems, but name a perfect game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I didn't play the original, I wasn't a beta tester, I didn't read ONE SINGLE review, and yet I enjoy the game. I highly encourage you to give it a whirl, it is worth it. (And, I mean, Firaxis isn't Akella, so hopefully, there will be some patches) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

So, I suggest you go out buy this game, play for a bit, and then we shall discuss the less positive traits of this game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

PS.: Indeed, the community here in this part of PA is a whole different one, new users and everything, therefore the teamwork is only in planning stages. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> (By that I mean we have to get used to each other)

<i>Sorry if it offends anybody</i>

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Show me one PERFECTLY historical Pirate game without any flaws about history,<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well donjn, there is a game that is almost, if not actually, perfect in historical accuracy. Its called Pirates of the Burning Sea. They have put in so much research into the game. They have gone everywhere for research, including the Smithsonian Institute. That game will be the closest we'll ever get.
I thing with all the input on this thread, I'll wait until after the hollidays to buy it, when it gets down to $20 to $30. Now if it were what I am mainly looking for, I would go for it right now, but I think I can wait.

Thanks for your comments.

Great. Just what we need...another online only game that ends up costing you almost $200 a year just to play. No thanks.

Okay... But POTBS is not even out yet. It may look great on paper but have you played it? Unless you are on the beta or something, I would venture that you haven't.

Realism ain't everything that's for sure. I come from a wargaming background and I can say I have played some VERY realistic games. But typically, I find that the more the pendulum swings towards realism, the farther away it gets from fun. There has to be a happy medium in there somewhere, otherwise, we'd have to get scurvy, lice and watered down rum to be realistic. I can handle lice and scurvy... but if anyone so much as comes near me bottle with some water, I'll run him through!

Just seems to me that you are doing a whole lot of commenting on games you haven't played yet. While there is nothing wrong with assuming, sometimes when you speak with confidence about something you've not done or seen, it kinda rubs people the wrong way.

As far as the price dropping to half after the holidays? Unless the market is different where you are, I doubt that will happen. This game should hold it's price tag for a while. There was a link around here that someone had posted that the game was on sale for under 40 bucks. Might be worth a shot... across the bow that is <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Actuall it is mentioned on the box, it says something like based on the original Pirates by Sid Meiers, but all in all, theres a whole world out there that has never heard of Pirates or even played it. I never played it, nor do I have the desire to play it now.

This game is really simplistic and its supposed to be based on the original, not a remake of the original as some have reported, atleast according the back of the box.

I bought it on name recogonition, not that of Pirates, but that of Sid Meiers, I've played his Civ III and loved it, so I thought it would have great depth of gameplay, in this regard I was sorely disapointed in the game. Replayability really isnt there. Attack, dance, find treasure, hunt traitors, rinse and repeat over and over.

There really are so many things that are lacking in this title I wouldnt even know where to begin to list them. The game is touted as being very open ended, but it puts you in this tiny little box and you soon realize that while you can play an open ended pirate, you soon hit a brickwall and have to start over on your career.

Not to be rude or anything, but I REALLY expected much more from a Sid Meiers game, regardless if this was a remake of the original, or based on the original. I played again last night for about 5 or 6 hours till I got bored doing the same thing over and over again.

Going out and hunting pirates that take me all of xx minutes to bombard their ship, then board it then knock thecaptain overboard within xx minutes, then rinse and repeat again.

It's a shame, and I can only hope that Firaxis puts out a patch/update to add some real depth of gameplay to this, else I really dont think this game will have the longevity that I would want out of a good pirates game, like this could have been.

CIV III - get metalworking, build cities, beat up your neighbors, build roads... rinse and repeat over and over. But I still play the heck out of CIV III and I'll play the heck out of this.

Do you see yourself playing it again in a week or two for 5 or 6 hours until you get bored? That's kinda how CIV III is for me after a few years. I dust it off a few times year, lose the better part of a weekend to it, then I put it away for a while. That's what I call "replayability". Once I finished Neverwinter Nights (and games like it), I never had the urge to touch it again.

I really dont see myself playing this in its current rendition for more than another 1 or 2 hours(just in case Im not seeing the gem in the game) but to reload it in a couple weeks or months is highly unlikely.

Repetitiveness I can handle, when I think Im accomplishing something. Diablo II stayed on my hard drive for a couple years, and we played that over and over and over, but I always felt like I was accomplishing something or finding something that would better my character in some way, and it felt personal. In Pirates it doesnt seem personal, perhaps if the ships that I attack and take over had something really special every now and then in their holds that I felt a connection to, and saw it in use, that might add to longevity of the game. If you think about it, both games are about treasure hunting, in one you are killing monsters to get loot, in the other you are attacking boats and towns to gain loot, but the loot is always the same. I think thats another area where the repetitiveness prevails in thegame. I always know that theres going to be xx gold on a ship, and it may contain one or more of the items that could be on any of the ships you can encounter in the game.

While there are things that are given or bought in this game, I dont feel a personal connection to them at all, they are just static objects on my screen that help me in some way, but I feel no connection to them, or how I got them.

Now as to Civ III, I feel there is depth in what you choose to do, and how you go about it. In this game its simplistic, there is no real depth of gameplay that I can see just yet (Maybe I'll see it in the next 2 hours that I play it later today), but right now Civ III has great depth and options on what you are going to do. If you reduce Civ III to a formula of do this, then do that, then do this to accomplish this, then you may have played it too much. Where as in this game it just isnt there. Here in this game I may eventually capture a town and install a gov, but it doesnt feel like it's mine, in CIV at least when I capture something I feel like it's mine, and I've worked for it to gain it.

So beyond repetitivness of this game it also suffers from a lack of feeling like Im really accomplishing something and have something to show for what I've done.

So I dunno, I guess die hard original pirates players may really enjoy this game as a remake of the original, but I dont really think this will appeal all that much to new players overall. Thats a general statment and I dont mean that there wont be any new players that wont like it, but I think it probably would have done better in an Xbox or PS2 release, since thats really the simplicity of it, it's more of a console game then a pc game.

Just my opinions.

ROFL all the stuff i miss when im sleeping <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Kuplo,

I think I understand what you mean. That's pretty constructive criticism actually. You need something more tangible... if that's possible with bits and bytes <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> But I think I understand.

Well, I hope you have not played the 1 or 2 hours more yet. Try this...
Start a new career on adventurer level in a MUCH different era and start out as the Spanish or something. Just try to play it differently than you had played before.

I think maybe things like a trophy room, or a treasure cave (like in Pirates! Gold) where you could see all your loot. Or changing the names of towns... just more "customization" maybe? To personalize it more? I think that's what you are getting at. And I do admit that CIV III is a deeper game from a complication sense... there is a ton of stuff to manage. Pirates! is a bit more fast paced I think.

Good post though. I think I get what you are saying now <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> HOoray! I can be taught!
