Ammo mod

Jack Rackham

ex train dispatcher
Quest Writer
Storm Modder
I have made a new mod which adds for all handguns: gunpowder, bullets (pistol & musket) and grapeshots. There are also the Gunpowder Flask and the Ammunition Pouch to keep this stuff.

Sounds great, Jack.

Looking forward to trying this out.

Cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

p.s. Any thought of powder for the great guns? Maybe even different size balls for the different types of guns?

Yes Jack Davidsson, I´ve thought about it. Cannon gunpowder would be nice! I´m not sure about different balls, problem is there are so many calibers now. Maybe it would be enough with gp; bigger cannons could use more etc etc.

Hey! That sounds COOL! Is the mod playable already? Where can we find it? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

It´s on the ftp and should be playable yes. You need build mod 12,1 + modpack + vassal weapon mod (+ ev new pistol sounds).

I have found it. I made a quick comparision with my modpack (latest release) and your new mod: Seems like your mod is based on quite an old modpack version, so It'll be slightly complicated to merge things in. But I will try. Sounds like a fun mod.

BTW: I just remembered: I'm not supposed to put in new mods yet; we're only supposed to fix bugs. BLAST! I want to put this in!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Pieter, I should have checked the modpack status. Think I have to get all newer stuff from your page and then redo this mod? Otherwise I can´t continue on this to next phase...

If I were you, I'd get the newest modpack version (a newer version is coming up later today though) and get the program WinMerge. That program allows you to make a comparision between your code and the modpack's code, making it much easier to merge it in. Especially if you made the code yourself and knows where it's supposed to go.
Hope you'll get that to work. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Bring it on there lads.

Wishfull thinking of me for the gun ammo, but yeah, powder for the great guns would be mighty fine there Jack.

Hey there Pieter.

I too think this is a good one and yes I agree with the "draw the line policy", however I think a quick test would be worthwhile.

I think if it shows up relatively bug free then stick it in, but if not then immediately bump it for a later build.

Cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thanks Pieter for your tips. Now I finally got the modpack home (only modem in this area). Then I´ll try out the WinMerge. It´s about 60 changes in 27 files. See what I can do.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> there Jack.

Let us know when you've updated your mod 'cause I'll most happily volunteer to give it a good testing.

Keep up the great work.

Jack Davidsson, I have started changing those files. Problem is I had to do some civil work as well today. I will delete the existing not functional mod from the ftp now. Yes I would appreciate your testing.

Aaaarrrgghh..... that'd be my pleasure there, matey.

Looking forward to it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" />

Now i´ts on the ftp. And I really hope everything will be allright this time. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

Thanks Jack,

I'll install it now, give it a good run and get back to you.

Cheers matey <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> there Jack,

I've started testing your new ammo mod. Nice new interface pictures for the new items. I always get excited seeing new items to use in this game...new "toys" to play with.

I've got a couple of observations so far:

- Ammo and powder seem to be expended <u>only</u> on kills (or maybe just hits, not sure yet). If you fire and miss then there's no ammo expenditure. Tried many a test shot out in the jungles and noticed that the ammo and powder levels never decreased. It was only when I went looking for bandits and monkeys to take on that the levels dropped and then only on hits. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" />

- When out of powder or powder flask and ammo pouch are not equiped, you can still draw and discharge your weapon although no damage will be inflicted and an appropriate message comes up saying out of powder or you need to equip flask/pouch. Maybe you could work it so that to be able to equip small arms in the first place you need to have both powder and ammo present.

I'm right into this concept of having ammo for the small arms as well as powder for the great guns. I've played some of the Sea Legends mod and have quite enjoyed this feature there. It adds another level of usefulness to traders who provide the ammo, and makes you consider your weapons a little more rather than taking them for granted (get gun... get bigger gun... get biggest gun... and then forget about it) and automatically having a powerful free hit.

I also like your view of having small arms ammo and powder a little harder to come by, whether it be by supply availability or higher costs. Not sure which would be more appropriate if at all. Consumables such as food, potions and ammo in the SLiB mod provided a greater gaming experience for me particularly since they were not always available and there were times when you had to do it tough without these. I'm wondering whether periodical resupply of merchants/traders is possible? e.g. Ammo shipments from Europe to traders which then deplete. Say shipments once every three months. Hmmm... just a thought.

Anyway, love you're work here. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> I'll get back to some testing when I get a chance and will check in again hopefully soon.

Cheers matey <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hello Jack. Thanks for your interest!
I know about those tings you mention and I am not happy about all. I sort of hooked on to the original idea of shooting. Only when you have a (red) target enemy a real shot (with sound) will be fired. That is also when gp & ammo is used. I can´t find a way to get rid of that white smoke and low click when you try to fire at the jungle for instance. Have earlier tried the equip genre but it seems to have one or two bad sides.
I am definitely listening to what you are saying and will now try around for a while. Still got some untested ideas. Must also consider really carefully so this thing will fit in with the next step (which was planned and started before this ammo mod)

I have just been testing this mod as well and have to say: Very well done. Works quite fine. I only have some small comments. Not really bugs, but more like balancing and gameplay issues:

Why do you actually need a powder flask and ammo pouch? You need to have them and have them equiped. But since you already get them at the beginning of the game, it's not really hard to come by these items. So I'd think it might be a good idea to either remove them again (it's just annoying to have to equip two additional items that don't really do much once you have them) or make add something that makes them nescessary.

About every single character has got a powder flask and ammo pouch (even if they don't have a gun, bullets and powder). After going into the Oxbay dungeons once, I emerged with about 30 of them, while you need only one. I sold them all to a trader and made a few thousand gold pieces profit. So the powder flask and ammo pouch are great ways of making much money in a real short time.

Traders don't seem to sell ammo and powder. I could only get it from looting enemy characters. But I got quite a lot of it still. I don't think that, as the mod currently stands, you would run out of ammo if you keep looting enemies. You get quite enough bullets. Now if enemies would only have one or two bullets, that would be enough for them (enemies don't usually shoot more than twice during a fight, do they?), but would make sure that they won't have much left when you loot them. So then you might actually run out of ammo and powder.

So I'm suggesting the following changes:
1) Try to fix some powder flask and ammo pouch gameplay issues. You could remove them from the game completely, give them no or little economic value (so you won't make so much money from them) or make it so that you can't loot them from enemies. Maybe you could think of some other things as well. I'm just randomly coming up with ideas.
2) Make enemies carry about 1 or 2 bullets. That would be enough for them, but not for you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
3) Have the traders sell a few bullets and a bit of powder as well, but not too much.

I hope you will take this as the constructive criticism it is meant to be. I reckon, once you get these issues sorted out, you have made a really excellent mod that can safely be added to the post Build 12 modpack. After all, this mod doesn't seem to come with serious game-killing bugs. And I really like this mod and would hate to leave it out. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />
