A Parrot in need

OK, I got the new animation working for existing character models (wanna see pirates flap their wings? Get man.an from here: <a href="http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Downloads/Animation/" target="_blank">http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Downloads/Animation/</a>.)

Nathan, I'm now ready for the parrot... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

Cool, Inez! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> Now a Stan kin ne made dat waves his arms like in Monkey Island! I've got that coat for Stan, we can switch heads with a guy that is wearing a sombrero, and away we go! HA!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

LOL! I didn't even think of Stan, but now that you mention it - the animation looks indeed just like him..

Here's an attempt to put the sombrero head (chelovek) on my "Stan" skin but the head doesn't fit well. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Inez: Awesome!

I'll have it for you all shortly; I'm afraid Christmas crimped my style in the modding sense. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

And crimped it continued.
Sorry bout that. :

But, finally got back to it this evening (in a break from `forum-catching`-up) and finished modeling it.
Exported two 3ds files, one with the wings down and the claws crimped, one with the wings up and the claws open.
Textures funky temp ones until Cat does her magic. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<img src="http://img61.exs.cx/img61/1333/parrotdone32sg.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

File in the root of the FTP (Parrot.zip).

Wow, Nathan, good to see you back. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Oh that's outstanding, Nathan, email me the texture map and I'll get to it - I have some great ideas and can make MANY different varieties!

WhooHOO!!! :par <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Come here little parrot or i'll flush in the toilet hehehe.....nice work <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

Hey guys, weren't we all supposed to get a crack at skinning the parrot?

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Hey guys, weren't we all supposed to get a crack at skinning the parrot?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That's right.

Yes, absolutely! Everyone should try it if they can - we can have parrots of many colors!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I still need what to me is an image map or a texture map, tho, or I will not know where to put the eye and how to band the wings or put other details...

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's efforts! This should be GREAT!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thanks, folks. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Re: parrot. Oh, absolutely, everyone's welcome!

(And those who model, you're welcome to do what you like with the mesh as well. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

Updated the file ( still Parrot.zip ) in the FTP as follows:
Added parrot09.max (the mesh, for those who have max)
Added P_bodyU.tga, wingU, legU, and clawU (unwrapped UVWs for each texture--since wingB and wingT have the same mapping, there's only one unwrapped file).
Wing is planar from the top (with the wing extended); mirrored on the right side.
Leg and claw are cylindrical* (each claw is individually cylindrical). Sadly these aren't terribly distinct.
Body is cylindrical too; the center of the file is the back, the edges the front. When painting the front, you may wish to use an offset tool to move the texture 128 pixels right (or left) to make the front be the front to ease painting it. Just remember to offset it back to normal at the end.

*By this I mean the texture image is wrapped like a sheet around the object. It's rather like a whatsit (Mercator?) projection of the globe.

Oh PERFECT, that's exactly what I need!!! WhooHOO! Can't wait to play with this, it should be fun!

There's no reason we can't have a LOT of different color parrots, from a lot of different artists! I'm truly looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

Nathan, your textures can't be converted to tx - I think it's the size that needs to be a multiple of something (16?). Better fix that before the artists get going ..
EDIT: Wrong, it's the color depth. That's easily fixed.

Now this is so funny <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
I put the man skeleton into the parrot, giving the wings the arms' bone numbers (and nothing else), resized it and rigged it up as a NPC:
meaning it can't fly, just floats along the ground with the wings swinging as if they were arms. Think it looks like a dove walking.
Very good is the jumping animation, because then it will spread its wings, and same with swimming.
Anyway, it's not really useful, but I thought you should see it - so it loaded it up to my homepage (<a href="http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Downloads/" target="_blank">http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Downloads/</a>).

Some small problems: after converting to gm a few triangles disappeared - Nathan you're sure they all have the same orientation ? But maybe it's a problem with the tool, so I'll check myself also.

I'll now start working on making a new animation for it so it can actually fly.

Oh, and one more thing:
To test it I sustituted the parrot for Malcolm Hatcher, but that's of course not a solution for the game. Could anyone maybe make some code so the parrot walk around with the townfolk ? (Of course we could also make it an animal, but I think it's cool if you can talk to it - hadn't Sir Christopher even suggested some text it could say to you ?)

Outstanding work NK... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

Hell, outstanding work _Inez_. I just did some sculpting on the side.
But thanks. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Inez: awesome!
Regarding disappearing faces: that's because the right leg and wing are mirrored (given -100% scale in X axis) and 3ds export keeps the normals at normal 100% (whereas in max the normals also are at -100% scale). So let me make them copies rather than instances and have err, normal, normals and send again.

Regarding tga probs: actually, it may also be because I exported them with RLE, and the Converter needs uncompressed TGA? 'Cause I think I've done 24bit TGAs ok before. But who knows, may well be both. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

How about we add an NPC with LAI_FollowEverywhere() on a normal NPC, that way the parrot trails a normal townsperson...
(or followEverywhere _you_...)

Let me write up some console code to that effect, where you walk up next to a person and hit F12 and kapow there's a parrot who will follow that person around.

Cat: 1. Great!
2. Ditto, absolutely. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
